    Religious Houses
Frairs, or Mendicant Friars, lived lives of poverty and begged on the streets. Monks, or Canons, had stable lives based on their properties and lives of seclusion. Hospitals cared for both body and soul, with prayers being as important as physical treatments.
    Austin Friars
Site is now the New Museums Site. The gateway was roughly where Barclay's Bank (Benet St.) now is, with remains of the foundations still under the 1910 Scientific Periodicals Library.
    Barnwell Priory
Originally founded in 1092 by the first Sheriff, Picot, at St Giles Church, next to his castle. The Austin canons of St Giles church were moved in 1112 by the second Sheriff, Pain Peverel, to an area apparently known as children's springs - Barnewelle . (It seems every year, at Midsummer's Eve, children gathered there for games, attracting traders.) It became the largest religious foundation in the town and gained the right to hold Midsummer Fair . The site ran from Newmarket Road down to the river, east of what is now Elizabeth Way. The church of St Andrew the Less (now Christ Church) on Newmarket Road was associated with it. The Priory site was levelled between 1810-12.
    Carmelites (Whitefriars)
Site roughly opposite the Granta pub, having previously been in Chesterton.

Don't Take St. John's Wort With Medications, Says FDA
    About AIDS
    BY SANDY BARTLETT
    February 25, 2000:
The FDA last week issued a Public Health Advisory urging HIV patients to avoid using the popular herbal product St. John's wort in combination with their HIV "drug cocktail." The warning is based on a study published in the British medical journal The Lancet , indicating that St. John's wort (aka Hypericin or Hypericum) significantly reduces blood concentrations of the protease inhibitor Crixivan (indinavir). Apparently the herb is processed by the body through the same pathway (cytochrome P450) as Crixivan; the herb speeds up the liver's elimination of the Crixivan from the body. If the Crixivan concentration in the blood drops, there won't be enough of the drug to control the HIV, and viral resistance may develop. The potential result: a failed "cocktail" combination and a therapy option lost. Although this study deals only with Crixivan, many HIV drugs are also C-P450-processed compounds, including all the protease inhibitors (PIs) and NNRTI's (non-nukes). Therefore, the warning should be regarded as applying to them, too. Indeed, St. John's wort should be avoided with all C-P450 drugs "for transplants, heart disease, depression, anxiety, some cancers" until future data demonstrate otherwise. Hypericin/St. John's wort is a popular herbal product used for depression and anxiety, conditions which bother many people with chronic illness, including HIV disease. Because herbal products are sold unregulated as "food supplements," they have not been tested, but are viewed by the public as being harmless and that may false. Consult with your doctor to see if this herb/drug interaction might be a problem for you. For details, see

'Nova's Austin recovers from pair of foot surgeries
By Joe Wieder Published: Thursday, December 2, 2004 Watching your teammates struggle to a 6-10 Big East record is no doubt rough, especially when your vantage point is from the bench. But for Villanova senior forward Marcus Austin , both the losses and wins last season hurt - literally - to some extent.
In the beginning of the 2003-04 season, Austin served an eight-game suspension for abusing long-distance phone call access. His first opportunity to participate last season came against UNC-Greensboro on Dec. 28, 2003, and it turned out to be the last and only game he would play in for the year. With seven minutes of playing time, Austin had three rebounds and one point.
Austin's junior year ended when he sprained his ankle in practice. The pain, though, spread to the bottom of his foot. After receiving X-rays, Austin learned from his doctor that his foot had been broken for three years. In the summer of 2000, Austin thought he sprained the same foot, but he actually broke a bone. It would take two surgeries to treat Austin's fractured fifth metatarsal.
"It was hard," Austin said, "especially for the losses. Our team really struggled to put up some wins.
