Intelligenza Artificiale di Steven Spielberg Tratto da un brevissimo racconto di Brian Aldiss, "Supertoys last all summer long", "A.I." è uno dei film più attesi della stagione, proprio per quel legame con lo scomparso Stanley Kubrick del quale si è tanto parlato. Spielberg si cimenta con un compito davvero non facile: girare un film nato sotto l'egida del pensiero di uno dei massimi autori mondiali di cinema, per di più nemmeno criticabile, poiché scomparso, ma l'esperimento non gli riesce. E.T. ", "Incontri ravvicinati del terzo tipo", " Pinocchio " e "Incompreso". Il crollo finale è nelle scene con gli extraterrestri (ma davvero solo Carpenter riesce a farli cattivi?) davvero melense, scontate e prevedibili. Probabilmente "A.I." piacerà molto (vista anche la reazione del pubblico del Festival di Venezia, che ha estratto alla fine più di un fazzoletto), ma è davvero un peccato che "A.I." sia troppo spielberghiano (nella più criticabile accezione del termine), che lasci allo spettatore che ha amato Kubrick la sensazione di vedere il remake di un film mai girato.

Wells "The War of the Worlds" e remake high-tech dell'omonimo film diretto nel 1953 da Byron Haskin, "La Guerra dei Mondi" può essere probabilmente identificato come un tassello significativo nell'evoluzione di quel filone disaster-movie che negli ultimi anni non ha mai cessato di proporre aggiornamenti più o meno significativi sull'argomento, ma non per questo arriva a meritarsi un riconoscimento quale "prodotto capace di centrare in pieno il bersaglio". Al di là della straordinaria presenza di un Tim Robbins in versione " Mystic River ", la parte migliore - o forse la più efficace - dell'opera di Spielberg è probabilmente la porzione di attacco alieno che coinvolge il protagonista e la sua fuga dallo sterminio operato dai Tripodi. Trattasi di una sequenza dedicata a tutti coloro i quali pensavano non ci si potesse più aspettare di venire sorpresi da un qualsivoglia special effect Il film si lascia apprezzare anche per come riesce a descrivere il panico dilagante generato da una catastrofe di proporzioni apocalittiche, un'interessante quanto credibile riproposizione dell'antica formula dell'

Quella che all'apparenza può sembrare una commediola fin troppo politically correct è in realtà una sottile e non banale critica al Sistema, al verso per cui gira il mondo di oggi, agli stessi Stati Uniti. D'altra parte da uno come Niccol, sceneggiatore di " Truman Show " e "S1m0ne" e regista di "Gattaca", era logico aspettarsi un film di questo genere. Forse era meno logico aspettarselo da uno come Spielberg, ma proprio grazie ad un prodotto come questo si può capire l'intelligenza di questo regista, etichettato ancora spesso come autore di pellicole nient'altro che spettacolari e dotato invece di una sensibilità e di una profondità rara nel cinema moderno. Tecnicamente ineccepibile - basta quella panoramica circolare all'ingresso di Viktor nel terminal internazionale a mettere i brividi - "The Terminal" ha l'unico grande difetto di girare attorno a personaggi troppo caricaturali. E' quello che accade nell'ultima fatica di Steven Spielberg che racconta, con taglio brillante e moderato divertimento, l'impossibile storia vera di Frank W. Abagnale Jr., un uomo che incarna tutte le contraddizioni del mito americano. L'intraprendente giovane, infatti, grazie al suo charme e a un'invidiabile faccia tosta, riesce con camaleontica destrezza a fingersi pilota d'aereo, medico e avvocato e ad arricchirsi attraverso assegni falsificati alla perfezione. Difficile raccontare una storia cosi' straordinaria riuscendo a renderla credibile e la sceneggiatura sceglie l'effetto dimenticando spesso la causa, finendo con il proporre situazioni che richiedono una dose di ingenuita' in eccesso per poter conquistare (la fuga dall'aereo, il reclutamento delle hostess nella scuola). L'unica àncora pare la didascalia "tratto da una storia vera" con cui il film si apre e che dovrebbe giustificare le tante incongruenze. Sembra quasi l'ennesima sfida di Spielberg: girare un film lontano dalle sue corde, una commedia a basso budget, e riuscire ugualmente a fare centro. Gli incassi confermano l'intuito del regista, ma il film, pur simpatico, non morde e qualche volta sonnecchia.

Home il Meglio del web E.T. l'extraterrestre E.T. è un film che punta ad un alto coinvolgimento dello spettatore. I due elementi che favoriscono questa strategia sono, da una parte, la colonna sonora, un'autentica sinfonia che accompagna quasi ogni scena e dall'altra una sceneggiatura che costruisce nettissimi rapporti di opposizione e di solidarietà fra i personaggi. È nella costruzione di questa opposizione che però Spielberg compie qualche errore. Innanzitutto la caratterizzazione di Elliot come bambino debole, sottoposto alle angherie del fratello e degli amici, è fin troppo scoperta ed esplicita. Ancora più smaccata è l'introduzione, sempre nella prima scena di interni, del tema della separazione dei genitori: - Telefona a tuo padre! - Come faccio che è in Messico con Daisy?! Si vogliono porre qui le basi dell'amicizia fra Elliot ed E.T., ma tutto è fatto con gran fretta e senza smussature. La prima scena, con l'arrivo dell'astronave e la fuga di E.T., introduce l'elemento fiabesco che dominerà tutta la pellicola. La scena si basa sull'uso del dettaglio, sulla scelta di far vedere la parte per il tutto: le pile, le scarpe degli uomini, le chiavi. È quest'ultimo elemento che però diventa debordante, presentato continuamente e in modo esplicito. Ma qual è il senso di questa scelta? Le chiavi sono un segno, il suo significante è il mazzo di chiavi nella sua materialità, ma il significato? Sembra che sia nell'area semantica del potere, del potere di catturare e imprigionare, ma perché soffermarsi su questo segno? Perché ripeterlo una decina di volte?
