Remembering the Civil Rights Movement Movement Soul- The Freedom Movement
CD Liner Notes:
In the early 1960's, something new happened: a genuine mass movement began in the Deep South. The "revolutionaries" were cotton-pickers, sharecroppers, domestic workers, farmers and housewives. Alongside them stood a handful of civil rights workers, mostly from the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), whose reputation for courage and commitment would soon become legendary. "Beware a revolution that comes singing," someone once said. And these people sang . They also preached, they chanted, they talked. And it was all about one thing: freedom for black people, too long bound in slavery. MOVEMENT SOUL is a collection of live recordings from the freedom movement at a peak time: 1963 and 1964. Inspired moments have been chosen from mass meeting,s sermons, rallies, demonstrations and individual interviews. Traditionally sung prayers and passionate sayings are intermingled with songs like "Go Tell It on the Mountain," "This Little Light of Mine" and "Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me 'Round." Many of the recordings took place at times of heightened emotion, when the community was filled with fear, exhilaration, or defiance. Here's for example, are the program notes on two high points:

A.
Yeah it was. I guess at that time there wasn't the sort of compartmentalize that you find in the business today.
I was a folk singer, who moved into the theater, and we didn't expect it to be a success. I guess I took advantage of the television series to do the music. It was also an innocent time. It was an energetic time, so I didn't compartmentalize anything, and it was all part of the life experience. Q. One of the scenes that was recreated in the movie is when you jump onto the hood of the car. Apparently you got hurt when filming it?

A look at his career American soul singer Luther Vandross has died at the age of 54, two years after suffering a major stroke.
One of the leading romantic singers of his generation, he sold 25 million albums and won dozens of awards. Even after his stroke in 2003, he kept recording, winning four Grammys for his final album Dance With My Father. Tributes from stars such as Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson poured in after his death, at the JFK Medical Centre in New Jersey, was announced. The singer "had a peaceful passing under the watchful eye of friends, family and the medical support team," said hospital spokesman Robert Cavanaugh. He did not give the cause of death but said the singer had never fully recovered from the stroke he suffered in his Manhattan apartment in April 2003. "He was a close friend of mine and right now it's shocking," he was quoted by the Associated Press as saying. I have amazing memories of seeing Luther live, such a wonderful voice and amazing experience. I am extremely sad

David Mancuso
One record Mancuso plays —Van Morrison's 1968 classic Astral Weeks —reveals the crucial, underacknowledged links between the proto-disco scene and the rock counterculture . Today, disco is often celebrated for its camp and kitschy plasticness. But the pre-Saturday Night Fever dance underground was actually sweetly earnest and irony-free in its hippie-dippie positivity, as evinced by anthems like M.F.S.B.'s " Love Is the Message." And the scene's combination of overwhelming sound, trippy lighting, and hallucinogens was indebted to the late-'60s psychedelic culture. Mancuso still uses the Timothy Leary catchphrase "set and setting" to describe the art of creating the right vibe at parties. Simon Reynolds

dave godin b. David Edward Godin, 21st June 1936, Lambeth, South London, United Kingdom d. 15th October 2004, Rotherham, Yorkshire, United Kingdom Dave Godin had been in touch with me for a while now. I learned of his passing from his close friend Chris Hill, who kindly let me know that Dave had died. I knew Dave was ill and he asked me, if I called him, could I call him at certain times of the day, which I did. If I got the moment right, we would talk for a while. Most of the conversations I used to have with Dave concerned politics, however, when we got onto the subject of music, we spoke for hours. He discussed tracks I had never heard of (being a Southerner...even though my family roots are in Hull. LOL). I spoke about one's he had never heard of (him being a North...sorry, another Southerner!). What a team! LOL. If you could bottle Dave's musical knowledge and post it here, I would have my website hosts demanding more money for webspace! Dave attended a Dartford Grammar School in his teens. His main claim to fame arrived via his fine columns in the Blues and Soul Publication. Dave contributed to that magazine for nearly 30 years. He was also the creator of the term 'Northern Soul'.

Did Robert Johnson sell his soul at the crossroads? "If you want to learn how to make songs yourself, you take your guitar and your go to where the road crosses that way, where a crossroads is. Get there be sure to get there just a little ' fore 12 that night so you know you'll be there. You have your guitar and be playing a piece there by yourself…A big black man will walk up there and take your guitar and he'll tune it. And then he'll play a piece and hand it back to you. That's the way I learned to play anything I want." Tommy Johnson
I asked Clarence Gatemouth Brown if he knew anyone who sold his soul to the devil. Unfortunately he did not. And I had the feeling he thought it a foolish question. I took my search to the library and decided to focus on Robert Johnson. The majority of the information concerning Robert Johnson said relatively the same thing nothing. It is only the rumor, or legend, surrounding him. People tell about a young RJ being scolded and ridiculed by Son House at a local juke joint. All that is known is that Robert Johnson disappeared for a time span and when he returned his genius flourished with his guitar. One author chalked it up to intensive practice over a year's time.

    Right Now
(orig, Presto rmx, inst, Presto rmx inst) /Nutshell (orig, inst)
Kim's best known to us for the sweet soul of her debut CD, but here she steps out in a much more beat-heavy approach! "Right Now" is a thumping, bumping anthem but also a tune that's got the depth we've come to expect from Kim! "Nutshell" has a percolating electronic groove! Neo Soul AKIKO
Classy and sophisticated vocals from Akiko! The sound here is very classic mostly done with small trio backing, and a moody, late nite feel that really matches the cover and title. Lyrics are all in English, and tunes are mostly standards but they're often performed with a nice bounce!
