This musical, with a book by John Weidman, explores the history of presidential assassination in America, from John Wilkes Booth to John Hinckley, Jr. Assassins climaxes in a surreal sequence where the assassins convince Lee Harvey Oswald that his act is the only way he will connect with them, with history, and with the world. The song "Something Just Broke" was added for the London productions, and has been included in all subsequent productions, although it has not yet been recorded.

GYPSY
Purchase The Cast Album Sheet Music The Movie (DVD) The Movie (VHS)
Book by ARTHUR LAURENTS Lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM Music by JULE STYNE Based on the autobiography of GYPSY ROSE LEE
First produced at the Broadway Theatre on May 21, 1959, with Ethel Merman as "Rose", Jack Klugman as "Herbie" and Sandra Church as "Louise".
G YPSY was the musical comedy adaptation of Gypsy: A Memoir , the autobiography of Gypsy Rose Lee, who has become famous in burlesque as a striptease artist. With her sister, June (the distinguished motion-picture star, June Havoc), she had had a rich career in the theatre, always driven on to ever-greater successes by an over-ambitious and persevering mother. The play opens in a little vaudeville house where several child acts are being rehearsed for a contest. The team of Baby Louise and Baby June are one of the attractions; their mother, Rose, seated in the back of the house, continually thunders out bits of advice to her children. When the three return home Rose prevails on her husband to provide funds with which to build a vaudeville act around June. That act "Baby June and her Newsboys" tours the vaudeville circuit for a number of years. We next encounter the girls and their mother backstage in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Herbie, a salesman, saunters in. Now he gives the theatre manager advice to put a motion-picture into his show; now he urges Rose to allow her kids to grow up in a normal home under the normal guidance of parents. Something about Herbie impresses Rose that he has the makings of a good agent. She suggests that they team up to further June's career ("Small World"). Now the act reaches Akron, Ohio. It is Louise's birthday, and a celebration is taking place in the family's dingy hotel room. They eat chow mein and egg rolls; Louise gathers her gifts, one of which is a live pet lamb; and the talk is all about a new farm act Mama Rose has in mind for June. When Herbie appears, he brings with him Mr. Goldstone, who represents the Orpheum vaudeville circuit. His influence and connections are tapped.

A musical with book by John Weidman, Pacific Overtures traces the history of Japan from the first contact with America (via Commodore Matthew Perry) through the modern age. The "development" of the country is represented by two characters, Kayama Yasaemon, a traditional samurai, and his friend Manjiro, a fisherman who had been shipwrecked in Boston, where he embraced Western ways. As Japan becomes more Westernized, Kayama embraces the new culture while Manjiro rejects it, rediscovering his roots. All this is acted out against a backdrop of the greater changes in Japan, as the Japanese and the world powers all try to capitalize on the opening up of Japan. Includes the songs "Poems," "Pretty Lady," and "Someone in a Tree."

48. Sondheim!
Article published August, 2002, with information on a summer music festival.

document.write(''); Sondheim read full text Sondheim! A summer festival showcases the wit and artistry of the musical-theater master, drawing "nuts" from all over West Side Story The Sondheim Review . Web sites like sondheim.com are filled with the impassioned chat of devotees discussing the life and work of the man they call "the master." As New York magazine once asked, "Is Stephen Sondheim God?" When the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. opened its box office this past February for its summerlong "Sondheim Celebration," ticket buyers jammed 40 phone lines, clicked on the Web site 55 times a second and stood in long queues outside. Ticket sales shattered the one-day record, previously held by Beauty and the Beast . The festival, which concludes in late August, features new productions of S weeney Todd Sunday in the Park with George A Little Night Music Company Passion and Merrily We Roll Along Writer Chip Brown attended the Kennedy Center's production of Sunday with some trepidation because, as he put it, "enchantment can't be bottled, and 18 years had gone by since I first saw the show and became a Sondheim nut. Few things are more embarrassing than the object of a passion after it has cooled. Would it be like rediscovering some ghastly old love letter or overheated journal entry, where you cringingly wonder what the fuss was all about? "And then the curtain went up on a striking stage set with covered easels, and from the orchestra pit a French horn cried out, and strings came flowing up like a flood of water from a spring, and the driving percussive motifs of the piano pressed their argument forward. Sure, it was easy to mark what wasn't as good as the original (or the original as I remembered it), but memory slips too easily into myth, and after a while I found I wasn't holding back with crossed arms and a show-me face."

A musical with book by James Lapine, based on the painting "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte." Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. George, a painter, has trouble connecting with his lover, Dot, when he thinks he has to choose between her and painting because he can't balance them both. The second act reveals that his great-grandson has similar problems, but he is able to start working through them when he returns to the island (now covered in condos) and is visited by a spectral vision of Dot. Like Merrily We Roll Along Sunday employs evolving musical motifs such as Dot's first act showstopper, "We Do Not Belong Together," which eventually becomes her message to the 1984 George: "Move On," in which she and George realize, "We have always belonged together." Includes the songs "Finishing the Hat," "Putting It Together," and "Children and Art."

Quincy Jones - musician, arranger, composer, producer
Quincy Jones started out in Jazz bands, playing Trumpet with some of the leading names in Jazz and Bebop including Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Theolonius Monk, Herbie Hancock, Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Holiday. He took up arranging and composing band music, spent some time in the record company Mercury Records, reinvented himself as a film composer, before becoming one of the leading music producers. Along the way he demonstrated a knack for honing some fine tunes, be they Jazz, Blues, Soul, Latin, Rock or Pop, and he has worked with Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Steven Speilberg and Ice-T. He can no longer play trumpet following an emergency operation to fix an aneurism in the brain, but his other careers are enough to keep him very busy indeed! As a composer, he can produce sleezy, dark-sounding music as required for films like "In Cold Blood", "The Pawnbroker" and "In the Heat of the Night", but can also create lively upbeat music too. "The Italian Job" is the classic caper movie starring Michael Caine, Noel Coward, racing Minis and a great soundtrack by Quincy Jones. The title track is sung by Matt Munro in English and Italian, and other tracks are full of 60s kitsch including a jazzed up version of Greensleeves . Jones was staying in London to work on the movie with the ever-reliable lyricist Don Black, and was fascinated and amused by Cockney Rhyming Slang. This led to the real musical tour-de-force of the movie in the form of the "Getta Bloomin' Move On!" track by the "Self Preservation Society" towards the end of the movie which successfully blends bits of Classical Bach, English Pomp and Circumstance, Cockney Cheek, Football Chants and carefree caper frolicks. It's worth getting the soundtrack for this track alone.
