After having played two tryout runs in Chicago and Washington D.C. to mixed to negative overall reviews, producers have confirmed that Bounce , the first new musical from Stephen Sondheim in nine years, will not be seen on Broadway anytime soon.
The decision not to transfer the show to Broadway is yet another stumbling block for the musical whose history goes back to the early 1950's. The premiere of Bounce was directed by long-term associate Harold Prince. Bounce has taken on several titles in its development including Wise Guys and Gold! . On this latest change Prince said, "The abiding message of the show is that the best of America is pioneering - that we have an uncommon resilience, and the ability to reinvent ourselves. We believe Bounce reflects that, and Steve Sondheim's opening number is 'Bounce.'"

In the end though, Robert realizes that while relationships rarely turn out like they do in fairy tails, life is still better when you have someone to share it with. Sondheim, Stephen (b. 1930)
page: Stephen Sondheim's seventieth birthday on March 22, 2000 was marked by a gala fete at the Library of Congress and proved the occasion for numerous retrospectives of his remarkable career. The only child of a mother who designed clothing for his father's company, Sondheim grew up in an environment of wealth, talent, and refined sensibility. His parents divorced when he was ten years old. When his mother moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Stephen became a friend of a neighbor boy, Jimmy Hammerstein, son of presiding Broadway genius Oscar Hammerstein II, who encouraged Sondheim in his earliest efforts. Sondheim studied music at Williams College with avant garde composer Milton Babbitt. After graduating, he wrote scripts for the television series "Topper." One of the most innovative careers in Broadway history was launched when, at age 26, Sondheim was asked to write the lyrics for Leonard Bernstein's

Sondheim, Stephen (b. 1930)
page: Pursuit of the American dream invariably involves people selling out what they value most. "Franklin Shepard, Inc."'s accomplishments as a Hollywood producer are deconstructed in Merrily , the play moving backwards from his most recent moment of public success to the recognition of the creative potential and the friendships that he betrayed along the way. Juxtaposing the ghosts of hopeful young people with the middle-aged persons they have become in the reunion of Weissman Girls in Follies , Sondheim anatomizes the disintegration of pre-World War II American optimism into late-century cynicism and emotional emptiness. The ultimate result of Admiral Perry's "gunboat diplomacy" in the 1850s, Pacific Overtures shrewdly demonstrates, is Japan's learning only too well the lessons of American economic imperialism and undercutting the American economy in the 1980s. Joanne's toast to "The Ladies Who Lunch" in Company is a stinging analysis of the emptiness of their seemingly prosperous lives.

37. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street - A Musical By Stephen Sondheim A
Brief history of the musical by stephen sondheim and Hugh Wheeler, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm58.html
Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Book: Hugh Wheeler Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is a macabre tragicomedy based on the legend of a half-mad 19th century English barber. He is driven to crime when his wife and child are taken from him by an evil judge. Unjustly imprisoned, Todd eventually escapes and vows to bring justice not only to the judge who destroyed his life, but to all the people of London. To this end, he forms a partnership with Mrs. Lovett, an enterprising barmistress whose meat pies soon become the tastiest in London! This tale of vengeance and murder features a top-notch score by Stephen Sondheim, one of the musical theatre's most brilliant composers. The "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" which opens both acts is based in the "Dies Irae," the Roman Catholic mass for the dead. Hugh Wheeler's libretto is based on a play by Christopher Bond. Sweeney Todd opened at the Uris Theatre on March 1, 1979. Although the show only ran for 557 performances, it went on to win 8 Tony Awards including "Best Musical." The original cast featured Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett and Len Cariou as Sweeney Todd.

Sondheim, Stephen Joshua Sondheim, Stephen Joshua, Hammerstein 2d, and early in his career he wrote lyrics for Leonard Bernstein 's West Side Story (1957) and collaborated with Jule Styne in the writing of Gypsy (1959). Later he composed his own music and lyrics for such musicals as A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum Company Follies A Little Night Music Pacific Overtures Sweeney Todd (1979), and Merrily We Roll Along (1981). His later works include Sunday in the Park with George (1984; Pulitzer Prize), Into the Woods Passion Assassins (1999), and Bounce (2003). Widely regarded as the most important figure in the American musical theater of the late 20th cent., Sondheim has expanded the boundaries of lyric writing and subject matter, introduced complex characters and situations, brought a mordant wit and sophisticated lyricism to his words and music, and in the process reinvented the Broadway musical. See biographies by G. Martin (1993) and M. Secrest (1998); studies by J. Gordon (1990, 1997).

39. Candide: The Musical
A synopsis and information on the musical by Lillian Hellman, Richard Wilbur, and Leonard Bernstein (revised by Hugh Wheeler and stephen sondheim.)
http://www.theatrehistory.com/american/candide_001.html
CANDIDE
Purchase The Movie The Cast Album Sheet Music
Book by LILLIAN HELLMAN Lyrics by RICHARD WILBUR Music by LEONARD BERNSTEIN A revised one-act version includes a new libretto by HUGH WHEELER and additional lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM
CANDIDE was first produced at the Martin Beck Theatre, New York, on December 1, 1956, with Robert Rounseville as "Candide," Max Adrian as "Pangloss," Barbara Cook as "Cunegonde," Louis Edmonds as "Maximilian," and Irra Petina as "Old Lady." A revised one-act version by Hugh Wheeler and Stephen Sondheim opened at the Chelsea Theatre Centre, Brooklyn, on December 19, 1973. V Making their escape, Candide and Cunegonde, along with the Old Lady, board a vessel heading for the New World, but, as luck would have it, the vessel is attacked by pirates, and Cunegonde, along with the Old Lady, is carried off for another round of ravishment. When he arrives in the New World, Candide is surprised to find both Paquette and Maximilian alive and sold into slavery. Candide brings them up-to-date on what has happened and swears that he will rescue Cunegonde once more and marry her. Maximilian, however, is still a Thunder-Ten-Tronck, and furious at the suggestion that his sister should marry a bastard, begins chasing Candide madly. Candide hides behind a statue and, as luck would have it, accidentally knocks the statue over, crushing Maximilian to death instantly. Now, reunited but without a penny to their name, our little band of heroes isn't quite sure what to do next, so they decide to visit the Wisest Man in the World who, quite luckily, is rumored to live in a nearby cave. There they find Dr. Pangloss, miraculously unhanged, and, having abandoned his old "best of all possible worlds" philosophy, spouting a new one: the work ethic. Candide, still quite commited to the good doctor, decides to follow this new creed, buy a little farm, grow a garden, and milk the cow which they have managed to acquire. Even as everyone agrees that this is, of course, a splendid decision, the cow falls dead with the pox.
