By Claire Donnelly
AS the child star of hit film The Full Monty, William Snape seemed set for a long and glittering showbiz career.
At 12, he caused a sensation in the Oscar-nominated movie and was bombarded by directors believing he was the next big thing.
Between auditions, William spent his time being mobbed by fans and enjoying the celebrity circuit.
But the bubble burst for the Sheffield-born schoolboy as he struggled to get his next big break.
William - known to friends and family as Wim - was involved in a horrific accident. His family feared he would die and doctors were amazed he did not lose his leg.
Now 17, he is hoping to make his mark again after joining ITV soap Emmerdale as farmer Stephen Butler.

17 May 2004 FROM SYDNEY TO SUFFOLK ... THE BALLET BOYZ ARE BACK! DON'T MISS GEORGE PIPER DANCES AT SNAPE MALTINGS THIS WEEKEND DanceEast presents Olivier-award winning George Piper Dances, aka TVs Ballet Boyz at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 May to perform three stunning dance pieces previously unseen outside of London.
Having gained popularity as the stars of Channel 4's 'Ballet Boyz', and building on their experience with The Royal Ballet, Directors Michael Nunn and William Trevitt have created one of the hottest new companies on the international dance scene.
Following successful tours across the USA and Australia and winning several prestigious dance awards, Michael and Billy return to Suffolk with an outstanding programme of dance: Mesmerics combines Christopher Wheeldon's classical ballet background with the versatility of the company and is set to Philip Glass's score for Cello Octet; Ballet Frankfurt's William Forsythe has specially choreographed Approximate Sonata I, V for the company; and Broken Fall, by Russell Maliphant which premi„red at the Royal Opera House in 2003 and recently won an Olivier Award for 'Best New Dance Production'.
The Ballet Boyz, as always, have been taking their trusted camera to rehearsals to share with you their behind the scenes video diaries, giving the audience an insiders peek into the creative process. And watch out for them on Friday, as they will be filming in and around Snape as they get to know their surroundings for the weekend.

70 Conservation Groups Warn Trade Politics Endanger Dolphins: DOLPHIN-DEADLY BILL ADVANCES IN SENATE WITHOUT A FIGHT
Washington, D.C: Environmentalists are disappointed by today's decision in the Senate Commerce Committee to quickly pass without any debate a bill that would weaken standards for labeling tuna cans "dolphin-safe" and thus result in dolphin deaths. The result of today's Senate markup resembles action last month in the House, which has already passed its dolphin-deadly bill through committee and is awaiting floor action. Defenders of Wildlife President Rodger Schlickeisen said, "The senators' lack of interest in dolphin protection, as evidenced by today's speedy passage of a dolphin-deadly bill without debate, is appalling. Protection of dolphins is an issue of extreme importance to the American public and yet the senators were unwilling to even debate it. Instead they caved in to special interests and trade politics." Defenders of Wildlife and other members of a coalition of more than 70 other groups adamantly oppose weakening the standard, as proposed in S. 1420, sponsored by Senators John Breaux (D-LA) and Ted Stevens (R-AK).

A stone cross set in memorial gardens. On the base of the cross are inscribed the names of those of Bollington who died in the two world wars. Inscription
They whom this memorial commemorates were numbered among those who at the call of King and Country left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Dear Sir,
Does benzene poisoning cause scrapie?
My correspondence of the 9th January entitled "Does benzene poisoning cause scrapie?" ( ) was not intended to suggest benzene poisoning is the sole cause of scrapie. So-called TSE's (Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies) can only be demonstrated to be transmissible with great difficulty. There is therefore a body of opinion that concludes the diseases are degenerative conditions influenced by a variety of environmental factors. Professor Ebringer suggests bacteria as a factor ( ) and he may well be correct. My suggestion of benzene as a factor is supported by a number of circumstances including current day geographical location of disease "hot spots" in the UK and Scandinavian. We must also be aware that only a small percentage of "scrapie" cases are ever conclusively proven as such. It would therefore be reasonable to suggest that at least some of the reported cases are misdiagnosed lead poisoning (saturnine encephalopathy) or copper deficiency (swayback).

Education came to Snape in 1835-36 when Squire Long from Hurts Hall, Saxmundham, built a two-room school along Farnham Road, near the Church. Conditions were spartan and children had to pay between 1 and 3 pennies each per week to receive their education. The first record of named staff is found in documents dated 1844, when a William Lamb was head and he was replaced by William Henry Thorpe in January 1858, he in turn was succeeded in October 1864 by Harry Bailey Baxter, who it seems was in post when the first formal inspection of the school took place. The Inspector’s report is briefly quoted in an entry in the School diary dated 10th February 1864. The entry reads as follows: “The school would be improved if there were more ventilation. The total receipt was £27-5s-7d for 9 months, showing that 61 children received grants, 58 by examination 3 infants upon attendance ”. The next inspection report dated 2nd November 1865, went as follows:  “This is a good county school, well taught and disciplined ”.

The 13th Century Church of
St John the Baptist, Snape
The present church, which was originally thatched, is 13th century with a 15th century porch and tower but there was a Snape Church, possibly on the same site, at the time of the Norman Conquest. Now the parish works closely with the two other churches, Sternfield and Benhall, which are in the same benefice and share some services as well as clergy. A typical monthly pattern of worship at Snape is: 1st Sunday: 9:30 am United Benefice Service with Holy Communion 2nd Sunday: 8:00 am Holy Communion 3rd Sunday: 9:30 am Holy Communion 4th Sunday: 11:00 am All Age Worship and when this occurs 5th Sunday: 6:00 pm Evensong. Details of services including other mid-week services will be found on the church noticeboard by the gate and in the church porch. They are also contained in the parish magazine. Other activities include the Edward Bear Club for under-fives and their mothers and Lazers for those nine years old and upward. There is also a benefice-wide Women's Fellowship. The church is usually kept unlocked during daylight hours. There is a bookstall within the church offering for sale cards and publications on many aspects of faith, prayer and meditation. Also available from the church is a quiz for young visitors, which chronicles some aspects of the building
