Teaching the Faith
THE MAGISTERIUM OF POPE JOHN PAUL II
Msgr. William Smith
Elected in October 1978, Pope John Paul II is now in the 18th year of his pontificate. He has been Pope one year longer than Pius XI (1922-1939), one year less that Pius XII (1939-1958) and three years longer than Paul VI (1963-1978). Now fulfilling one of the longer pontificates of the 20th century, John Paul II has produced a doctrinal moral patrimony which is not yet completed but already is extensive - very extensive. Not only is his pastoral papal teaching extensive, it is remarkable for the continuity and developed consistency with his predecessors and with the central ecclesial event of the century - Vatican Council II. In a biographical entry in the New Catholic Encyclopedia, one author asserts of Pope Pius XII that the volume and scope of his teaching "surpassed any of his predecessors" (NCE. V. 6, p. 417). Surely it is fair to say that the extensive teaching of Pius XII was both a precursor and necessary contribution to Vatican II. Cardinal A. Bea has stated that Vatican II would not have been possible without the long and fruitful preparation provided by Pius XII. For example, consider how three great encyclicals of Pius XII prepared the way for three central documents of the Council: Mystici Corporis (1943), Divino Afflante Spiritu (1943) and Mediator Dei (1947) touching respectively: the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium), on Divine Revelation (Dei Verbum) and on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium). Moreover, the Council document, The Church and the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes) would not have addressed successfully so many pastoral questions and problems if the teaching ministry of Pius XII had not thrown so much light on so many pressing problems.

and the Haunting of the Hazelnut Bower
by
Brent Raycroft
My argument in this paper is that William Wordsworth's poem "Nutting" is a second-generation rather than a first-generation Romantic work, that it was heavily influenced by a scene from a novel by Charlotte Smith called The Young Philosopher , published in 1798. In order to make this specific argument more credible, I will work my way toward it by discussing another, more widely acknowledged aspect of Smith's influence on Wordsworth: the influence of her blank verse. We shall see that one of English Romanticism's most original psycho-geographical spaces — the hazelnut grove of Wordsworth's "Nutting" — is haunted by earlier visitors and an earlier transgression, and by an anxiety of influence as well as an anxiety of sexuality.
But first some context. This paper was originally written for a BARS conference comemorating Mary Wollstonecraft, whose name reminds us that there is a generation of Romanticism that precedes Wordsworth and Coleridge. Blake, after all, was older than Wordsworth by thirteen years, and began to publish, in his fashion, in 1783. Mary Wollstonecraft published several works in the 1780's, including her first novel, Mary. Charlotte Smith's Elegiac Sonnets appeared in 1784; her first novel in 1788. While she has not been so fully recuperated as Blake and Wollstonecraft, Smith belongs in their company in more than a chronological sense. There are some close social and intellectual connections. Smith and Blake (though not at the same time) had the same patron, William Hayley, and may have met each other through this connection. In a letter Smith refers to Blake as "a Man, who might be anything than an engraver" (McKillop 251). Smith and Wollstonecraft had what was more clearly a mutual admiration: Wollstonecraft anthologized Smith's sonnets in

Smith, William H. Rank: Private Regiment: 26th Indiana Infantry Regiment (1861-1866) Service: 1861 August-?
    Background note:
William H. Smith enlisted in the 26th Indiana Infantry in August, 1861, a regiment that served exclusively in the western theatre. Smith, a brickyard worker, may have enlisted in the Army to escape hard economic times as much as to fulfill his patriotic fervor. After mustering into the U.S. service at Indianapolis on August 31st, the regiment was sent to St. Louis and then into the interior of Missouri. Under John C. Fremont, they participated in the campaign on Springfield, Mo., and were then assigned to guard the Pacific Railroad line at Sedalia, Mo., until July, 1862, when they began in a long and frustrating pursuit of John Marmaduke's Confederates. The regiment engaged the enemy at Newtonia, Mo., in September, 1862, at the Battle of Prairie Grove (where they suffered substantial losses), and at Van Buren, Ark., on December 28th. After Prairie Grove, the 26th Indiana remained on guard duty in Missouri until the following June, when they were sent to Vicksburg during the final days of the siege, and then to Port Hudson and Carrolton, La. By October, 1863, they were again on the move, being assigned to post duty at Brownsville, Tex. Upon their reenlistment in February, 1864, the regiment returned to Lousiana, where they remained until joining in the Mobile Campaign in March and April, 1865.
