william godwin and informal education
'Refer them to reading, to conversation, to meditation; but teach them neither creeds nor catechisms, either moral or political.'
William Godwin Mary Wollstonecraft (who wrote the feminist classic: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman -1792), the father of Mary Shelley (the author of Frankenstein - 1818) and the father-in-law of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley (who was influenced by his radical libertarianism).
Life
Having turned away from the ministry Godwin earned a living through writing and teaching. The former included short novels, biographies and newspaper pieces. In response to the fierce debate and argument around the French Revolution (from 1789 on), Godwin wanted to set out a properly philosophical and principled statement of political theory. The result was An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice which appeared in 1793. It brought him momentary fame and some wealth (a thousand guineas). He followed it up in 1794 with a novel The Adventures of Caleb Williams . Peter Marshall describes it as ‘a gripping story of flight and pursuit designed to show how "the spirit and character of the government intrudes itself into every rank of society"’. The book was hailed as a masterpiece. ‘It is not only a work of brilliant social observation, but may be considered the first thriller and the first psychological novel which anticipates the anxieties of modern existentialism’ (1993: 196).

Soldier, surveyor, and artist. William Mein Smith was born in Cape Town in 1798, the son of a civilian officer of the Admiralty. Like so many more of those who figured prominently in the early days of New Zealand colonisation, his origins were military. He entered the British Army as a cadet in 1813, and in the course of service in Canada, Gibraltar, and at Woolwich Academy rose to the rank of Captain. While in Canada he married the daughter of General Basgrave Wallace. As a captain, he also held a professorial post in plan drawing at the Woolwich Royal Military Academy, and it was in that capacity that he became Surveyor-General to the New Zealand Company in 1839. He sailed from London with three other surveyors in the Cuba and arrived at Port Nicholson in January 1840. He chose Thorndon as the site of a city when his proposal in favour of Petone (Britannia) was rejected following a Hutt Valley flood. He was also a member of the committee set up for the maintenance of law and order in April 1840, and was gazetted a Magistrate in 1841. He still had his military affiliations, but in 1842 he retired from the Army and in the following year sold his commission. Smith's surveying activities covered a large part of New Zealand. He began with land selection in the Wanganui area and spent a lot of time in the Wairarapa. In September 1842 he was commissioned by Colonel Wakefield to survey South Island harbours along the east coast, a task which took him three months. Unfortunately, much of the valuable data he compiled was lost when his cutter

Author, naturalist, and farmer. The economic depression that was to last until the turn of the century had just begun. Tutira's 24,000 acres were clothed mainly with bracken and grass grew only in small patches. The merino sheep with which the station was stocked were not suitable for the type of country. An enormous annual death rate reduced their numbers and, after three or four years of unprofitable partnership, Cunningham paid £600 in reduction of the joint liability and relinquished his share in Tutira which was then taken over by Thomas Stuart. During the next two decades the partners defeated the bracken, grassed down the land, and greatly increased and improved their flock. In 1903 Guthrie-Smith bought out Stuart. The station then carried 38,000 sheep and was free of debt. After the First World War he subdivided the greater portion of it for soldier settlement. The small portion remaining at the time of his death – 2,000 acres — was left in trust for the nation. It was not, however, as a farmer but as an author that Guthrie-Smith won distinction. In 1891 he had written and published a drama entitled

Willie and Elgie (called "PaPa " and "Granny" by their grandchildren) married in Hopkins County on November 6, 1918. They lived in the area around Sulphur Springs, Texas where they farmed and raised three children. They lived in the Old Tarrant community, then later moved to the Mahoney community where they bought their first house from Rich Massey. (Rich was married to Granny's sister Bertha.) They had a small place - there was the house, the barn and a few acres of land to raise a garden and a truck patch. PaPa Smith also raised cotton, borrowing money from the bank to plant the crop, and then praying he would be able to pick enough cotton to sell and pay off the loan at the bank. Then he would turn around and borrow again to plant the next year's crop.....a never ending circle! There was a cow named 'Baby' that PaPa eventually sold to Uncle Curt for $100.
