The Red Skelton Show USA, CBS (Van Bernard Productions), Sketch/standup, b/w then colour, 1953 Starring: Red Skelton One of the great American comics of the TV era, Red Skelton was born Richard Skelton in Vincennes, Indiana, on 18 July 1913. After a long run in circuses, pantomime, radio and films he landed his own TV show in 1951, courtesy of NBC. Two years later he switched to CBS and began two decades at or near the top of the ratings, lasting until his show was cancelled in 1971. Along the way Skelton introduced a gaggle of characters who would embed themselves in the nation's consciousness, among them Freddie the Freeloader, Clem Kadiddlehopper, Bolivar Shagnasty, San Fernando Red, Junior - the Mean Widdle Kid, Cauliflower McPugg, Sheriff Deadeye, Willy Lump Lump. and seagulls Gertrude and Heathcliff. Skelton's ability to ad-lib was always impressive, as was his array of guest stars, most of whom were delighted to participate in the sketches. Skelton died on 17 September 1997, aged 84. As The Red Skelton Hour , ten mid-1960s editions were screened by London-area ITV in the summer of 1967, featuring such guest stars as Ginger Rogers, Vincent Price, Milton Berle, Audrey Meadows, Ed Wynn, Raymond Burr, the Kinks and George Gobel.

SKELTON, RED U.S. Comedian It was not until 1986, a full fifteen years after his weekly television show had ended, that "one of America's clowns" received his overdue critical praise. Only then did the critics realize what the public had long known. Regardless of his passion for corny gags and slapstick comedy, Red Skelton was a gifted comedian. He is one of the few performers to succeed in four entertainment genresvaudeville, radio, film, and television. To honor his lifetime achievements, Red received the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Governor's Emmy Award in 1986 and, with it, the critical praise he deserved. Born 18 July 1913 as Richard Red Skelton, his youth was characterized by poverty and a fascination for vaudeville. It was the influence of vaudeville great Ed Wynn that led Skelton to perfect his own comedy routines. The basics of Red's vaudeville act consisted of pantomimes, pratfalls, funny voices, crossed eyes, and numerous sight gags that would serve to identify Skelton throughout his entertainment career. It was also during this period that Red began developing various comedy characters. His radio show, which ran from 1941 to 1953, provided the opportunity to present his comedy to a mass audience. The limitations of the sound medium also made it necessary for him to further develop the characters he would later bring to televisionFreddie the Freeloader; Clem Kadiddlehopper, the country bumpkin; Willy Lump Lump, the drunk; Cauliflower McPugg, the boxer; The Mean Widdle Kid; San Fernando Red, the con man.

http://www.snopes.com/glurge/skelton.htm
The Pledge of Allegiance Claim: In 1969, comic Red Skelton lamented on his weekly television show that the Pledge of Allegiance might someday be considered a "prayer" and eliminated from public schools. Status: True. Example: [Skelton, 1969]
The Pledge of Allegiance: I: Me, an individual, a committee of one. PLEDGE: Dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self pity. ALLEGIANCE: My love and my devotion. UNITED: That means that we have all come together. STATES: Individual communities that have united into 48 great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose; all divided with imaginary boundaries yet united to a common purpose, and that's love for country. AND TO THE REPUBLIC: A state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people, and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people. FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION: One nation, meaning "so blessed by God."

The Charge "Red learned the art of entertaining live audiences in vaudeville. Movies helped him develop sight gags and learn how to play to the camera. Radio taught him the technologies and demands of live broadcasting. There were few entertainers better prepared to enter the new medium of television than Red Skelton."—Narrator, "Hollywood Remembers Red Skelton" Opening Statement The Red Skelton Show won two Emmy Awards for its first season in 1951: Best Comedy Show and Best Comedian. Up against ever-growing competition, the second season floundered and NBC cancelled the show. CBS picked it up immediately and it ran every Tuesday night for another 17 years. There was no real demographic for the show because people of all ages loved Red Skelton. I saw most of his shows in the early 1960s; his skits and gags were the hot topic every Wednesday in the high school cafeteria as well as over backyard fences. Facts of the Case Frequently, guest stars made appearances. George Raft showed up as (what else?) a gangster named Mr. Lasagna, Edward Everett Horton and Jackie Coogan were city dump neighbors, and Reginald Denney played Skelton's butler. Vincent Price appeared in two episodes; one featured him as a crooked art dealer, and in the other he played a ham actor (!) who gets into the ring with Cauliflower McPugg. I admit fast-forwarding through the last ten minutes of this episode, but the sight of Price in boxing shorts is an image that will haunt me forever.

ABOUT THE RADIO SHOW: Comedy In every generation, there are singularly outrageous comedians, and for the middle of the 20th century, Red Skelton was probably the "top banana" of all. He remained true to the clown tradition of making 'em laugh, anyway possible and as often as possible. Although known for his physical comedy , he was a master character actor and mime, and had a joke book that was reputed to have 180 thousand jokes. Red said he worked his way up to radio by doing "everything but opera." He got on radio with Avalon Time and soon his Raleigh Program, began in '41, took him to the top. All through the WWII years he kept America laughing, except for a '44 stint as a drafted private who made it his job to entertain the troops.

"Providing Excellence in Entertainment Since 1970" Tom Mullica
as
"Red Skelton" Tom Mullica 's affair with show business began in 1955 when, as a seven-year-old, he decided to be a clown. Two years later he discovered magic and not long after combined the two. In addition to magic and clowning, he is a highly skilled ventriloquist, and he and his rabbit figure, Duke, can fracture an audience. Buster Keaton, Danny Kaye, Stan Laurel, W.C. Fields, Steve Allen , Victor Borge and the Three Stooges have all influenced his comedic style. However, one of the dominant factors in Tom Mullica 's life is the quiet, sincere friendship he had developed with Red Skelton. Never a night goes by that Tom does not mention Red. "He has influenced my career as an entertainer more than anyone else," Tom says flatly. "I learned through him that being liked by the audience is the most important thing...what you do is secondary, you've got to have a genuine likeability!" When Tom learned that Skelton would be performing at Atlanta's Fox Theatre, "I contacted him at his hotel, and he said he would meet me at the stage door of the Fox at 7 p.m." Following this meeting, he learned about Skelton's paintings – a collection of 24 he wanted badly but could not afford. He started saving and subsequently purchased the 24 – all signed personally by Skelton, only to learn that there were eight more, which he ultimately purchased. This began a correspondence between Tom and Mr. Skelton's personal secretary.
