Martin Short
Martin Short was born in Hamilton, Ontario, where he lived and worked until he eventually graduated from McMaster University with a degree in social work. His comedic talents were undeniable, and his prowess for slapstick supreme. It was no surprise when he chose a career in comedy. He started out small, with tiny roles on American television. He appeared in two series, "The Associates" and "I'm a Big Girl Now." His first big break came in 1982, in the form of a role on "SCTV: Network 90," the American version of the hit Canadian comedy series "SCTV." After a year he returned to his country of birth to appear in the original "SCTV." Martin Short won an Emmy, a Gemini, and the Earl Grey Award for his work in SCTV. The show brought him to the attention of the country and also to fellow Canuck-turned-television producer Lorne Michaels. Short was lured south of the border once more to appear in Michaels' "Saturday Night Live" where he stayed for only a year. The year was enough however for Americans to take notice. Martin Short was ready for bigger things, and bigger screens.

(Parts of Speech) I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."

Blessed Ambrose Sansedoni, OP (RM)
(also known as Ambrose of Siena or Ambrose Sassedoni)
Born in Siena, Italy, in 1220; died 1287; cultus confirmed in 1622. Although his birth was attended by the prodigies also associated with Blessed James of Bevagna (of Mevania)that of three brilliant stars bearing the image of a friar preacherAmbrose Sansedoni got off to a very bad start by the world's account. He was so badly deformed and so ugly that his own mother could hardly bear to look at him. He was given into the care of a nurse, who daily took him with her to the Dominican church where she attended Mass. Here it was remarked that the baby, who fretted most of the time, was quiet and content when the nurse would hold him near the altar of relics, and that he cried violently when taken away. One day, as the nurse was kneeling there with the baby's face covered with a scarf, a pilgrim approached and said to her, "Do not cover that child's face. He will one day be the glory of this city." A few days later, at this same altar, a miracle occurred. The unfortunate child suddenly reached out his twisted limbs and quite distinctly pronounced the sacred name of Jesus. At once, all deformity left him, and he became a normal child.

short biography of Pope St. martin I, martyr.

The Ecole Glossary
Martin I Tuscan by birth, Pope/St. Martin was elected to the papal throne in . He had been a reader and a deacon before his election, and he was crowned without the consent of Emperor Constans II. Shortly after being elected, Martin convoked a synod at the Lateran to condemn monothelitism; the synod defied an order from the emperor to discuss the issue. Constans sent Olympius, the exarch of Ravenna, to bring the pope to Constantinople for trial. Olympius failed, and in , Theodore Collipas, the new exarch, invaded Rome and imprisoned the pope, who spent a year under guard on Naxos. When the party reached Constantinople in , Martin was charged with treason and condemned to death. Patriarch Paul II intervened on the pope's behalf, and the sentence was changed to life imprisonment. Sent to Cherson in the Crimea in , Martin starved and died three months after his arrival. He is the last pope to have been martyred. Karen Rae Keck

Would it kill you to watch one? Martin Scorsese Martin Scorsese doesn't rely on special effects or commercialism to tell his tales; just brilliant story telling. Few have been around as long and few have been as hailed as he has in his career. While typically he chooses to focus on mob and gangster-related stories and characters, he definitely hasn’t stereocast himself. Instead he has proven himself to be awe inspiring in just about every genre available. Joe Pesci using some conflict resolution techniques he picked up in therapy.

Martin Luther King, Jr.
Civil-Rights Leader The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands
in moments of comfort and convenience, but where
he stands at times of challenge and controversy.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
was born on January 15, 1929 at his family home in Atlanta, Georgia. King was an eloquent Baptist minister and leader of the civil-rights movement in America from the Mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. King promoted non-violent means to achieve civil-rights reform and was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. King's grandfather was a Baptist preacher. His father was pastor of Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church. King earned his own Bachelor of Divinity degree from Crozier Theological Seminary in 1951 and earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Boston University in 1955. While at seminary King became acquainted with Mohandas Gandhi 's philosophy of nonviolent social protest. On a trip to India in 1959 King met with followers of Gandhi. During these discussions he became more convinced than ever that nonviolent resistance was the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for freedom. As a pastor of a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama, King lead a Black bus boycott. He and ninety others were arrested and indicted under the provisions of a law making it illegal to conspire to obstruct the operation of a business. King and several others were found guilty, but appealed their case. As the bus boycott dragged on, King was gaining a national reputation. The ultimate sucess of the Montgomery bus boycott made King a national hero.

Martin Van Buren Only about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, but trim and erect, Martin Van Buren dressed fastidiously. His impeccable appearance belied his amiabilityand his humble background. Of Dutch descent, he was born in 1782, the son of a tavernkeeper and farmer, in Kinderhook, New York. As a young lawyer he became involved in New York politics. As leader of the "Albany Regency," an effective New York political organization, he shrewdly dispensed public offices and bounty in a fashion calculated to bring votes. Yet he faithfully fulfilled official duties, and in 1821 was elected to the United States Senate. By 1827 he had emerged as the principal northern leader for Andrew Jackson. President Jackson rewarded Van Buren by appointing him Secretary of State. As the Cabinet Members appointed at John C. Calhoun's recommendation began to demonstrate only secondary loyalty to Jackson, Van Buren emerged as the President's most trusted adviser. Jackson referred to him as, "a true man with no guile."

The rift in the Cabinet became serious because of Jackson's differences with Calhoun, a Presidential aspirant. Van Buren suggested a way out of an eventual impasse: he and Secretary of War Eaton resigned, so that Calhoun men would also resign. Jackson appointed a new Cabinet, and sought again to reward Van Buren by appointing him Minister to Great Britain. Vice President Calhoun, as President of the Senate, cast the deciding vote against the appointmentand made a martyr of Van Buren.

    The past
Once upon a time, there were some giant companies that, with the failure of the 4-channel battle fresh in mind, formed an expert group with the mission to invent tomorrow's technology in sound compression. Fortunately, they did. The format, named MPEG Layer 3 or for short Since the format had such an outstanding compression and still very good sound quality, it was soon adapted as the de facto standard for digital music. The lack of possibilities to include textual information in the files was however disturbingly present. Suddenly, someone (Eric Kemp alias NamkraD, I've been told) had a vision of a fix-sized 128-byte tag that would reside at the end of the audio file. It would include title, artist, album, year, genre and a comment field. Someone, possibly the very same someone, implemented this and everyone was happy. Soon afterwards, Michael Mutschler, the author of , extended this tag, called ID3, to also include which track on the CD the music originated from. He used the last two bytes of the comment field for this and named his variant ID3 v1.1. (more information about ID3 and ID3v1.1 can be found

Tcltexed is a "simple" text editor I created in innumerable hours of work, which is based on the script language Tcl/Tk. I especially adapted it to the needs of a LaTeX addict (my humble self of course), but some of my friend's ideas were also implemented, so I think I programmed something which might be useful to the public.
    What can Tcltexed do?
    • First of all everything a normal text editor can do as well. You can edit texts, copy and paste, search and replace, and so on. The command shortcuts are modelled in a kind of Motiv style and in the style known from DOS programmes such as edit, Borland Pascal, etc., or joe under UNIX. The external programmes latex, xdvi, dvips and ghostview can be started simply by clicking the respective button. Their output will be shown automatically. Syntax Highlighting with differentiation between known and unknown LaTeX commands. User definable buttons for frequently used LaTeX command sequences. Larger text areas can be commented by using the mouse alone. Last but not least there is a reference list of LaTeX commands known to Tcltexed. For most of these short descriptions are available for help (only in German at the moment, but I'm working on it), which can either be activated through the list or directly within the document.
