William Shockley: The Heretic of Silicon Valley
Mike Green
Nobel laureate, racial antagonist, failed politician, and disowned father of the semiconductor industry; William Barton Shockley played a variety of different roles through his life. He was born on the 13th February 1910 in London, though his parents, William and Mary, were both Americans. His father worked as a mining engineer and had been transferred to Europe, but the family returned to the United States two years later.

He was tutored at...
He was tutored at home, before attending the Hollywood High School. William went on to get a degree from the California Institute of Technology in 1932. Next he crossed to the East Coast to begin his post graduate studies, receiving a Ph.D from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1936. After obtaining his doctorate he joined the highly reputed scientific establishment Bell Laboratories.
Small wonders
Some of the greatest innovations of the Twentieth Century would come out of Bell Laboratories, the CCD, the laser, and the first telecommunications satellite among them, but Shockley would be involved in perhaps its most prevalent creation. In 1947, he along with engineers John Bardeen and Walter Brattain, designed the transistor. Using layers of positively and negatively doped material they were able to form a gate through which current could be passed, or closed off as required. The advantages of transistor technology over the vacuum tubes that were used in electrical systems up to this point are well known; they were very bulky, fragile, had slow response times, and tended to burn out. Using pieces of germanium, and later silicon to replace these devices had countless advantages, and secured worldwide acclaim for its inventor.

    By MIKE CULBERT
Gazette Executive Editor Berkeley, California, Monday, March 30, 1970 A "Foundation for Research and Education on Eugenics and Dysgenics," set up to study the admittedly controversial area of human genetic equality and the importance of genetic factors on human intelligence, is now established and operating through Berkeley. Dr. William Shockley of Stanford University, Nobel Prize-winning inventor of the transistor and persistent gadfly in the area of genetic investigation, announced over the weekend the addition of a famed University of California professor emeritus of paleontology as a director of FREED which Shockley heads. He is Dr. Ralph W. Chaney, Berkeley, long associated with the University of California-Berkeley, long active in Save the Redwoods League, the author of numerous books, and, like Dr. Shockley, a member of the prestigious National Academy of Science. Dr. Chaney joins anatomist Dr. John B.deC.M. Saunders and Shockley as directors of the recently established non-profit research organization.

This Week Inventor Archive Inventor Search Inventor of the Week Archive Browse for a different Invention or Inventor Transistor John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley worked together at Bell Labs in the 1940s for a relatively brief period of time. But their collaboration resulted in one of the most important inventions of the century: the transistor. This device would transform the electronics world and make a major impact on the architecture of computers, helping to put them into the mainstream just a few years later. Bardeen was born May 23, 1908 in Madison, Wisconsin and entered the University of Wisconsin at the age of 15 as an engineering student. He earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering and went on to work for the Gulf Oil Company as a geophysicist. Later he returned to school, pursuing and completing a Ph.D. in physics at Princeton in 1935. He worked as a Fellow at Harvard and later worked for the University of Minnesota until World War II began when he was transferred to the Naval Ordnance Labs to help the Navy develop protection mechanisms for ships and submarines. Shockley asked him to work for his Bell Labs research group in 1945. Brattain was born in Amoy, China on Feb. 10, 1902. His father had a teaching job there. Soon the family moved back to the state of Washington. Brattain majored in physics and math at Whitman College and went on to the University of Oregon where he earned a Masters degree, and then to the University of Minnesota where he completed his Ph.D. In 1929 Brattain began working for Bell Labs. He was assigned to Shockley's group, where his skills in experimentation would complement Bardeen’s talent for theory.

William Shockley: Still controversial, after all these years
About 30 colleagues of William Shockley, who came to Stanford in 1963 as a professor of electrical engineering and died in 1989, met Friday at the Center for Integrated Systems (CIS) to honor the co-inventor of the transistor. Shockley was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for that accomplishment in 1956, but later in his career publicized views on race, intelligence and eugenics that made him a leper among laureates. The group, whose members largely worked in Shockley's startup company before the inventor came to Stanford, has met on and off since 1956 to reminisce about Shockley's role in sparking the information technology revolution. "Shockley is the man who brought silicon to Silicon Valley," said meeting organizer and CIS building designer Jacques Beaudouin. Shockley left Bell Labs in Murray Hill, N.J., in 1955 and headed west, convinced that germanium was not the material of choice for making miniature electrical switches. The material was electrically "leaky" and didn't perform well in heat. Five miles from campus, at 391 San Antonio Road in Mountain View, Shockley established Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory. The site is now home to a furniture store whose sidewalk bears a plaque in part stating: "At this location in 1956, Dr. William Shockley started the first silicon device research and manufacturing company in the valley. The individuals that gathered to work at this site went on to form the pioneering Silicon Valley startup company, Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation, and invent the first practicable integrated circuit."

    William Shockley (1910-1989)

British-born American physicist. He shared a 1956 Nobel Prize for the development of the electronic transistor. Encyclopedia Shockley, William Bradford, 1910–89, American physicist, b. London. He graduated from the California Institute of Technology (B.S., 1932) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Ph.D., 1936). After directing antisubmarine research for the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to work at Bell Laboratories. There he and two colleagues, John Bardeen and Walter H. Brattain, produced the first transistor in 1947; for this work they shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1956. Shockley taught electrical engineering at Stanford Univ. from 1958 to 1975. In the late 1960s and 1970s he became the center of controversy when he lectured on his theory that blacks were intellectually inferior and, by reproducing faster than whites, were causing a retrogression in human evolution. Most social scientists took issue with his interpretation of gross intelligence quotient (IQ) scores because he made no allowance for cultural and social influences. Updated directions to Shepherd Cemetery: Many thanks to Ralph Mungle for sending in these updated directions. From Dardanelle take Rt 22/Rt 7 to Hwy 28. Follow Hwy 28 (right) to County Road (CR-40) (right). Follow CR-40 to CR-420 (this is not well marked but goes to the left from CR-40 - a sign reading "Omega Community" is at the turn off of CR-40, a dirt road when I visited). When you come to the "old chicken barns" on CR-420, turn left behind the barns (don't pass the barns). Go to the dead-end at a house. The cemetery is located to the right of the house with a gate and chain link fence. Before you make the trip, be advised that most graves are marked with only fieldstones and so far my research has not located a plot map. Good Luck. Original directions:
Copied and updated June 1991 by Marilyn Roberts and Cornelia Daniels. This cemetery is located in the Omega Community. From Dardanelle, take Hwy # for about 7 miles. Then turn right on County road # for about 2 miles. Turn left at the Omega Community sign. Where possible, we have updated this page to include any corrections and additions to listings. Source information for these additions and corrections came from the Social Security Death Index and various external sources.

Hubris and the Transistor William Bradford Shockley clearly was one of the brightest scientists of the 20th century, yet he lived a life of noisy desperation. He was a modern hero taken from one of the ancient Greek tragedies, caught in an age he helped invent. Like Orestes and Oedipus, Shockley was driven by the internal demon of hubris. Unlike Orestes and Oedipus, however, he never found redemption. Yet without him, you would probably be doing something less interesting right now. "One of the century's most important scientists"
