August 14, 1989 OBITUARY
William B. Shockley, 79, Creator of Transistor and Theory on Race
By WOLFGANG SAXON
Agence France-Presse This 1947 file photo shows Dr. William Shockley conducting research that led to the invention of the transistor at Bell Laboratory in 1947. illiam Bradford Shockley, who shared a Nobel Prize in physics for his role in the creation of the transistor and earned the enmity of many for his views on the genetic differences between the races, died of cancer of the prostate at his home in California on Saturday. He was 79 years old and lived on the campus of Stanford University. He was a professor emeritus of electrical engineering at Stanford. In addition, he lectured and wrote extensively. Many of his early endeavors became clouded by controversy, however, because of his pronouncements on race. He preached a philosophy of ''retrogressive evolution.'' Stipulating that intelligence was genetically transmitted, he deemed blacks genetically inferior to whites and unable to achieve their intellectual level. As a corollary, he suggested that blacks were reproducing faster than whites - hence, the retrogression in human evolution. Start of Electronic Age The invention of the transistor became the basis for the electronic age. From it flowed virtually every one of today's devices installed in airliners and cars, calculators and computers, wristwatches and washing machines.

Biographical information on John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley, and more of the history behind the transistor. By Mary Bellis The transistor is an influential invention that changed the course of history for computers. The first generation of computers used vacuum tubes ; the second generation of computers used transistors; the third generation of computers used integrated circuits ; and the fourth generation of computers used microprocessors John Bardeen, William Shockley, and Walter Brattain, scientists at the Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, were researching the behavior of crystals (germanium) as semi-conductors in an attempt to replace vacuum tubes as mechanical relays in telecommunications. The vacuum tube, used to amplify music and voice, made long-distance calling practical, but the tubes consumed power, created heat and burned out rapidly, requiring high maintenance.

Prior to transistors, digital circuits used vacuum tubes which had many disadvantages, they were larger, used more energy, and created more heat. Our Featured Story

WILLIAM BRADFORD SHOCKLEY was a major participant in the physical discoveries and inventions that are the basis of the transistor era and the twentieth-century electronics industrial revolution. Transistor circuits are basic to almost all of our technological advances. Shockley was born in London, England, on February 13, 1910. His parents were Americans. His father, William Hillman Shockley, was a mining engineer, and his mother, the former May Bradford, had been a federal deputy surveyor of mineral lands. In 1933 Shockley married Jean Alberta Bailey. They had two sons, William and Richard, and a daughter, Alison Lanelli. They divorced in 1955, and in the same year Shockley married Emmy Lanning. When Shockley was three years old, the family returned to the United States and settled in Palo Alto, California. His parents considered that they could give their son a better education at home than in the public schools. They therefore kept him out of school until he was eight years old. His mother taught him mathematics, and both parents encouraged his scientific interests. Professor Perley A. Ross, a Stanford physicist and neighbor in Palo Alto, exerted an especially important influence in stimulating his interest in science. Shockley was a frequent visitor at the Ross home, playing with the professor's two daughters and becoming a substitute son. When he entered high school, Shockley spent two years at the Palo Alto Military Academy. He then enrolled for a brief time in the Los Angeles Coaching School to study physics. He finished his high school education at Hollywood High, graduating in 1927.

Most social scientists took issue with his interpretation of gross intelligence quotient (IQ) scores because he made no allowance for cultural and social influences.

During World War II he was Research Director of the Anti-submarine Warfare Operations Research Group and he afterwards served as Expert Consultant in the office of the Secretary for War. As soon as the war ended, he was back doing solid-state research, now investigating semiconductors. He received the Medal for Merit in 1946, for his work with the War Department. One of his major contributions to the electronics industry was to apply quantum theory to the development of semiconductors. In 1947, with colleagues John Bardeen and Walter Brattain, he made the first successful amplifying semiconductor device. They called it a transistor (from transfer and resistor). Shockley made improvements to it in 1950, which made it easier to manufacture. His original idea eventually led to the development of the silicon chip. Shockley, Bardeen, and Brattain won the 1956 Nobel Prize for the development of the transistor. It allowed electronic devices to be built smaller and lighter and even cheaper. He resigned from Bell Labs in 1953 and moved back to the California Institute of Technology. Eventually he was given a chance to run his own company as a division of his Cal-Tech friend's successful electronics firm. In 1955, he joined Beckman Instruments, Inc., where he was appointed as the Director of Beckman's newly founded Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory division in Mountain View, California.
