Comedy is notorious for its inability to properly translate from one language to another or from once upon then to the here and now. It is quite undeniable that the fitful psychofamilial rantings of King Lear do move us so; as do other 17th Century sensations such as Henry V's Azincourt call-to-arms or our Jew of Malta's enkindled response to a naughty daughter's apostatizing Semitical dis (the burning down of her nunnery to kill NONE but her; but instead killing ALL but her) . . . alright...that's a little bit funny in a rather sick, sad, base, colour and hue. But genuinely intended time-worn giggles and humour from yesterday invariably fall flat upon contemporary ears and sensibilities. Flat they fall invariably, BUT FOR Jean-Baptiste Poquelin a.k.a. the grand French playwright of clever comedies, Molière.

Passed over for promotion within the Venetian army, Iago's twisted yet ingenious plot sets in motion a chain of events that will destroy the lives of his General Othello, Othello's faithful wife Desdemona and ultimately himself in this tale of political and sexual jealousy. One of Shakespeare's most intense tragedies, the action takes place over just three nights and two days hurtling the main characters to their destruction. This production of Othello celebrates the play's 400th anniversary by casting the first black African actor ever to play the title role in a major production in this country. This will also be the first time Othello has ever been staged in the Swan Theatre in Stratford. Antony Sher's recent credits for the Royal Shakespeare Company include The Roman Actor and The Malcontent (both part of the 2002 Jacobean Season)

Primo Time by Antony Sher In the winter of 1966, Primo Levi attended a stage version of his Auschwitz memoir, If This is a Man. The premiere was sold out. But Levi worried that what had once dehumanised him he now offered for sale in a theatre. The public nevertheless liked the sinewy, stripped-down production. For the finale the actors advanced slowly towards the audience, reciting: "You who live safely in your warm houses ... consider if this is a man." The lights dimmed and after a long silence came a standing ovation.

A feeling of shame "Sunday August 8 2004; Oswiecim, Poland. I’ve been here before. Once in person, many times in my mind. Even if you’re only a secular Jew, as I am, as Primo Levi was, it’s impossible not to come here in your bad dreams." In preparation for his one-man play Primo Antony Sher visited Auschwitz unday August 8 2004; Oswiecim, Poland. I’ve been here before. Once in person, many times in my mind. Even if you’re only a secular Jew, as I am, as Primo Levi was, it’s impossible not to come here in your bad dreams. If you’re gay too, as I am, you come here accused on two counts. Among many shocks ahead of me here in Auschwitz today is the discovery that my kind had a specific prison badge: a Star of David made up of a pink triangle inverted over a yellow one. As on my previous trip (when I was visiting with the Holocaust Educational Trust), the gate gets me straightaway, the “Arbeit Macht Frei” gate. It’s as if something comes up through the ground. I start crying, I feel scared, lost, defenceless. This gate is so notorious it has gained mythic stature, and so you expect it to be colossal, looming upwards, throwing a long, sinister shadow. In reality it’s surprisingly ordinary —talk about the banality of evil — just high and wide enough for a military truck. It’s a gate, just a gate. Yes, as the saying went here, “You arrive through a gate, you leave through a chimney.” I first read Levi’s If This Is a Man , the account of his year in Auschwitz, when I did

Woza Shakespeare by Antony Sher, Gregory Doran
Titus Andronicus in South Africa
"A fascinating account of the trials and tribulations behind what turned into a triumphant South African production of Shakespeare's bloodiest tragedy, Titus Andronicus" (Independent) "Shakespeare in Tarantino mode" is how actor Antony Sher and director Gregory Doran describe Titus Andronicus, one of the most violent plays ever written. They decided to mount a production at the celebrated Market Theatre in Johannesburg with a top South African multi-racial cast. This is an account of their extraordinary journey: from the historic first visit of the Royal National Theatre Studio to South Africa in 1994, to the rehearsals and controversial opening of Titus at the Market, and the acclaim that greeted its subsequent performances in London, Leeds and Spain. This is not only a fascinating insight into how a director and actor approach a classic play, it is also a portrait of theatre in South Africa, emerging from the dark ages of apartheid, and a moving and often funny account of Antony Sher's professional debut in his homeland.
