Sam Shepard Born Samuel Shepard Rogers (nicknamed "Steve") on November 5, 1943, in Fort Sheridan, Illinois, Sam Shepard would later change his namereportedly because "Steve Rogers was the name of the original Captain America." He would work as a stable hand, herdsman, orange picker, sheep shearer, bus boy, waiter and musician before beginning his career as a playwright in New York in 1964 with the Theatre Genesis production of two one-act plays, Cowboys and The Rock Garden , at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery. A product of the 1960s counterculture, Shepard combines wild humor, grotesque satire, myth, and a sparse, haunting language to create a subversive pop art vision of America. His characters are typically loners and drifters caught between a mythical past and the mechanized present. In Cowboys , two buddies play what seems to be a game of cowboys and indians, re-enacting key episodes from Western mythologyepisodes which lead to decay, stasis, and the apparent death of one of the characters. His first full-length play

Synopsis: The third of Sam Shepard's "family" plays, "True West" is uncharacteristically traditional in its structure, but typically over the top in its story and style. The play tells the story of two brothers: Austin, a Hollywood screenwriter, and Lee, a small-time criminal. The play's encounter between the brothers explores the duality of human personality, and our primal capacity for violence. "True West" also holds a special place in Steppenwolf Theatre Co. history - it was the first time the company brought a production to the New York stage. Gary Sinise plays Austin, the screenwriter. Is Austin frightened of Lee or does he admire his brother's willingness to break the rules? "True West" Link:

Biographical Note
Known as the author of over forty plays, Sam Shepard, the American playwright, author, actor, and film director, was born Samuel Shepard Rogers VII, on November 5, 1943, in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Shepard attended high school in Duarte, California, and then a year of college at Mt. San Antonio Junior College in nearby Walnut, California, between 1960-1961 before working his way across country as a bus driver for a small theater group. Once he arrived in New York City, Shepard held a series of odd jobs, including work as a busboy at the Village Gate in 1963. The job at the legendary jazz club exposed Shepard to the early Sixties New York scene and the impassioned jazz of musicians like Thelonius Monk and Charles Mingus. Beginning in 1964, Shepard's first experimental one-act plays were produced off-off-Broadway. Plays like Chicago Icarus's Mother Red Cross (1966), and the two-act

Description: 184 p.: ill., ports; 26 cm.
Notes: Dylan asked New York playright Shepard to travel with the 1975 Rolling Thunder Review tour of the northeastern US, to write a screenplay for a film. It soon became evident that the eventual Renaldo and Clara would be primarily improvised, so there was little need for a scriptwriter. Shepard stayed on and ended up writing this book instead, his diary of the tour, told with style and wit, including poems, script excerpts, and great pictures of the tour.
