Alan Shepard, First American in Space (Grades K-12)
May 5 http://images.jsc.nasa.gov/iams/html/pao/mr3.htm
Official NASA portrait of Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard. In 1961, I lived in a small town in Florida called Neptune Beach. On May 5, I remember excitedly watching a small glow rise into the sky to the south and knowing that we had just sent a man into space. That man was Alan B. Shepard, Jr., one of the original seven Mercury astronauts. He was the first American to dare the unknown and enter space. His flight that day was a spectacular feat, even if he didn't even orbit Earth and even though the flight lasted only 15 minutes. That was Shepard's first flight, but not his last. As part of the Apollo 14 crew, he landed on the moon on February 1971. He became the fifth person to walk on the moon and the first to hit a golf ball there that in his words went for "miles and miles and miles." I guess there is a lot to be said for the effect of the moon's gravity. Shepard died in 1998 at the age of 74.

Alan Shepard, First American in Space, Dies at 74
WASHINGTON Astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American to fly in space and one of only 12 Americans to walk on the moon, died late Tuesday at a hospital in California. He was 74.

Shepard, one of the revered original seven Mercury astronauts named by NASA in April 1959, died at Community Hospital near Monterey, Calif., said Howard Benedict, executive director of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation in Titusville, Fla., who had talked to Shepard's wife.
The former Navy test pilot made a 15-minute suborbital flight five of those minutes in space on May 5, 1961, aboard the Freedom 7 spacecraft.
Ten years later, after overcoming a serious ear infection that lingered for six years, Shepard returned to space for his second and last flight as commander of Apollo 14 on Jan. 31, 1971.
Shepard spent 33 hours on the moon during the third lunar landing mission and became the only lunar golfer, playfully whacking golf balls with a six-iron. On that flight, Shepard, Edgar Mitchell and Stuart Roosa spent nine days in space; Mitchell and Shepard stayed on the moon for two days.

Its boundaries roughly are the Wapsi River on the north, the Mississippi River on the east, Interstate 80 on the south, and on the west by a line running generally between the towns of Maysville and Dixon. The district was formed in l957, when the current Senior High School was constructed. Four elementary schools in the district were all first occupied during the l967-68 school year. The Junior High School in the city of Eldridge was completed and has been in use since l975-76. Neil Armstrong Elementary School in Park View opened one year later in the fall of l976. Alan Shepard Elementary School Alan Shepard is one of North Scott's five elementary schools with an enrollment of approximately 320 students. We have been a leader in the state in having acquired North Central Association (NCA) accreditation for our school and in helping others to do so. We work with students from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. The school is named in honor of Alan Shepard, one of our nation's first astronauts. It was first occupied in the fall of 1967. Philosophy of Alan Shepard School Alan Shepard School exists for the benefit and welfare of children, our most important resource. As formal education is the responsibility of the school, our primary goal is to provide an educational environment which enables each child to attain his/her highest intellectual achievement. Cultural, socio-emotional, and psycho-motor development of the child must occur in conjunction with the intellectual growth.

    THE RIGHT STUFF
    July 22, 1998
The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer Transcript Space explorer Alan Shepard, the first American in space, died of leukemia at the age of 74. NewsHour essayist Roger Rosenblatt shares a passage of Tom Wolfe's novel The Right Stuff , written about Shepard, in his memory. JIM LEHRER: Finally tonight remembering astronaut Alan Shepard. Kwame Holman begins. KWAME HOLMAN: In 1959, Alan Shepard and six other men were chosen from a pool of 110 pilots who volunteered to go into space. NASA picked Shepard to guide its very first manned space flight. On May 5, 1961, Shepard became the first American in space. He flew for 15 minutes aboard the Mercury Freedom 7 Spacecraft and splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean. In an interview years later the former Navy test pilot explained his desire to be an astronaut. ALAN SHEPARD: I think all those who volunteered and certainly all of those who ended up the finals like I did really sort of looked at it as an extension of what they're doing. See, as a test pilot you sort of keep flying bigger and better and faster and farther and higher, et cetera, et cetera. In other words, you're expanding, as we call it, the boundary of the envelope, the envelope being the curve describing where thou shalt not pass if you're flying an airplane. And I think all of the original seven looked at it that way. It's not a brand new frontier really. It's just taking what we have and pushing it out. And I think all of us looked at it as a natural extension of what we'd been doing-flying strange-looking airplanes, and that sort of thing.

Alan B. Shepard, Jr., one of the nation's original Mercury Seven astronauts, was the first American to fly in space and he later walked on the moon as commander of the Apollo 14 mission. He was born in East Derry, N.H., on Nov. 18, 1923. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1944, and he has been awarded honorary degrees by Dartmouth College, Miami University (Ohio), and Franklin Pierce College. After graduation from Annapolis, Shepard served aboard the destroyer Cogswell in the Pacific during World War II. He later entered flight training, received his wings in 1947 and served several tours aboard aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean. In 1950 he attended the Navy Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, Md., and after graduation he became a test pilot there. He subsequently was assigned to Flight Squadron 193 at Moffett Field, Calif., a night fighter unit flying Banshee jets. As operations officer of this squadron, he served aboard the carrier Oriskany in the Pacific. He returned to Patuxent as a test pilot and instructor. He later attended the Naval War College at Newport, R.I., and after graduation was assigned to the staff of the commander-in-chief, Atlantic Fleet, as aircraft readiness officer. Shepard was selected by NASA as one of the United States' original seven astronauts in 1959. He became the first American to rocket into space on May 5, 1961, making a 16-minute suborbital trip that took him 115 miles high and 302 miles down the Atlantic tracking range in his Freedom 7 capsule.

In 1950, he attended the U.S. Navy Test Pilot School where he became an instructor. He also attended the Naval War College, graduating in 1957. His outstanding record as a test pilot with several thousand hours of complex experimental flying played a major role in his selection as one of the original seven U.S. astronauts in 1959. After two years of extensive training, Shepard, piloted the Mercury spacecraft Freedom 7 through its first successful sub-orbital flight. Although the flight lasted only 15 minutes, the capsule reached an altitude of 16 miles and speed of 5,180 miles per hour. This historic flight was the beginning of American's manned space programs.

"The entire NASA family is deeply saddened by the passing of Alan Shepard. NASA has lost one of its greatest pioneers; America has lost a shining star," said NASA Administrator Daniel S. Goldin. "Alan Shepard will be remembered, always, for his accomplishments of the past; being one of the original Mercury astronauts, for being the first American to fly in space, and for being one of only 12 Americans ever to step on the Moon.
