Robert Shaw (Conductor) Born: April 30, 1916 - Red Bluff, California, USA
Died: January 25, 1999 - New Haven, USA
In his long career, which spanned six decades and four cities, Robert Shaw transformed choral conducting into an art and nearly single-handedly raised its standards to a new level. For more than half a century he set the standard of excellence for choral music, enjoying a status of patriarch of vocal musical interpretation in the USA.
Robert (Lawson) Shaw came from a clerical family. His father and grandfather were ministers. More importantly, perhaps, his mother sang in church choirs. In school, his serious interests were in philosophy, literature, and religion, but at Pomona College he did join the glee club. Then, in a chain of events right out of a Warner Brothers backstage musical, Shaw was asked to take over the choir for an ailing faculty leader the same year that Fred Waring happened to be making a film on the campus. Waring was impressed, asked him to go to New York to develop a glee club for him, and a star conductor was born.
Robert Shaw's first major honor came as early as 1943 from the National Association of Composers and Conductors which cited him as "America's greatest choral conductor."

Deputy Robert L. Shaw
Monterey County Sheriff's Department
Date of Birth: October 20, 1956
Date Appointed: April 23, 1979
End of Watch: April 9, 1988 A Monterey County deputy sheriff spent the last minutes of his life under a barrage of eggs, bottles and firecrackers hurled by a crowd of unruly campers who called him and fellow officers "Nazis," police said. Cpl. Robert L. Shaw, 31, the father of two girls, collapsed and died of a heart attack April 19 while facing a hostile mob of 300 to 400 people at Laguna Seca Raceway, police said. The United States Grand Prix Championships motorcycle races were conducted there over the weekend. Police said the crowd continued to chant obscenities as two officers attempted to revive Shaw. The other deputies turned to face the crowd and formed a protective circle around their fallen colleague, said Capt. Roger Chaterton, commander of the sheriff's patrol division. Shaw appeared to stumble as he and about 40 other deputies, dressed in full riot gear, were attempting to restore order with "a show of force," police said. The deputies were walking in formation during the third of a series of sweeps at a campground where campers had thrown bottles and firecrackers at smaller groups of police earlier in the evening. Those officers had been forced to retreat when the crowd interfered with arrests, police said. Reports differ on whether the crowd blocked the ambulance that took Shaw to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, where he was pronounced dead.

SHAW, ROBERT In addition to ragtime elements such as syncopation, the "barrelhouse" piano style that Shaw played employs a heavy, hard-hitting touch with fast release. The style was named for the barrelhouses, where it was performed-sheds with walls lined with beer and whiskey, an open floor, and a piano on a raised platform in a corner of the room. The back of the barrelhouse was also used as a bawdy house. Shaw learned his distinct brand of piano playing from other musicians in the Fourth Ward, Houston, qv which was the center of black entertainment in the city. Clubs there hosted such important blues qv stylists as Sam (Lightnin') Hopkins. qv Shaw met Martha Landrum in Austin in 1936, and they married on December 22, 1939. They had no children. He had previously been married to a woman named Blanche, with whom he had a daughter, Verna Mae, and a son, William. For several decades after his marriage, Shaw ran his business in partnership with Martha. He was named the black businessman of the year in Austin in 1962. He also continued to play his music privately and for people who dropped by the Stop and Swat. In 1967, seven years before his retirement from the grocery business, he returned to public musical performance, this time with a younger generation of followers and growing fame. With the revival of his career, as one of the few remaining "virtuoso" barrelhouse blues pianists of his period, Shaw played often in Austin and at the Kerrville Folk Festival.
