His Life Was a Series of Changes From Malcolm Little to Malcolm X to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabbaz By Muneeb Baig
Posted: 7 Zul-Hijjah 1423, 9 February 2003 “Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and the overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this Ancient Holy Land…..”, so began the letter written by El-Hajj Malik El-Shabbaz, formerly Malcolm X, on his Hajj trip in 1964. He continued, “…There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blonds to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and the non-white. America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem…”

When Al-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz was in Makkah, he wrote a letter to his loyal assistants in Harlem... from his heart: Never have I witnessed such sincere hospitality and overwhelming spirit of true brotherhood as is practiced by people of all colors and races here in this ancient Holy Land, the home of Abraham, Muhammad and all the other Prophets of the Holy Scriptures. For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors. I have been blessed to visit the Holy City of Makkah, I have made my seven circuits around the Ka`bah, led by a young Mutawaf named Muhammad, I drank water from the well of the Zamzam. I ran seven times back and forth between the hills of Mt. Al-Safa and Al-Marwah. I have prayed in the ancient city of Mina, and I have prayed on Mt. `Arafat. There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white.

Location: Audubon Ballroom, 3940 Broadway, Manhattan
Architect: Davis, Brody, Bond
Sponsor Agency: Economic Development Corporation See Also Breath and Mandala , Designs on Glass, 2002 Elegy for El-Hajj Malik Shabazz is intended to function as an archway around the main entrance to the ballroom. Colin Chase has designed a series of etched glass windows which revolve around the X motif. There are six panels, four above the doors and one on either side of the doors. The artist explored the X as it is used as a symbol of inversion, as an hourglass, and as an unknown factor. The upper left and right panels were further combined with concentric circles of a target and a geometric subdivision that emphasizes the flow of time. The two central panels combine the X with an arch made of Kufic calligraphy that illustrates an Islamic prayer. About the Artist ...

Malcolm built the N.O.I. from a marginal sect to a spiritual organization of over 100,000 people. By the early 1960s, Malcolm was widely celebrated and feared as a public speaker and debater at universities and colleges and in the national media. The F.B.I., the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and its efforts to discredit the Nation and its leadership, led the agency to engage in a variety of illegal acts, wiretapping, surveillance, disruption, and harassment. A Life of Reinvention: Manning Marable Chronicles the Life of Malcolm X
Malcolm X was born 80 years ago today. To commemorate the occasion we hear a speech by Columbia University professor Manning Marable chronicling his life. Marable is currently working on a major new biography of Malcolm X which is tentatively titled "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention." [includes rush transcript]
Today we are going to spend the hour looking at one of the most dynamic leaders of the 20th century. He was born 80 years ago today but lived only 39 years. I'm talking about Malcolm X. To mark the occasion here in New York, the Shabazz family has temporarily opened the "Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center," which is located in what was once the Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm X was assassinated on February 21, 1965.

Betty Shabazz
Activist, Nurse, Health services administrator, Educator
When Betty Shabazz married the dynamic civil rights leader Malcolm X, she could not anticipate the extent of her husband's fame or the course that their lives would take. Shabazz was catapulted into the American consciousness and the media spotlight following her husband's assassination in 1965 by three members of the Nation of Islam. Formerly an esteemed leader of the Nation, Malcolm broke with the black nationalist organization in 1963, after revising his separatist ideals and embracing a new philosophy of global unity. His young widow, pregnant with twin daughters at the time of his murder, was left to raise themóand their four sistersóby herself. In the ensuing years, Shabazz avoided publicity when she could, opting instead to provide a quiet, normal home life and full education for her children. Betty was an adopted child who grew up in a fairly sheltered, middle-class household in Detroit, Michigan. She went to the local Methodist church with her parents on Sundays, parties on some Saturday nights with church friends, and movies on Fridays. While attending Northern High School, she joined the Del Sprites, a sorority affiliate. After high school graduation, she attended Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and encountered her first racial hostilities, which she didn't understand, and her parents refused to acknowledge. "They thought [the problems] were my fault," she later wrote in an autobiographical portrait printed in Essence magazine. After two years in Alabama, she moved to New York City to attend nursing school at Brooklyn State Hospital.

http://www.nbufront.org/html/X-PressYourself/WhyHonorMalcolm.html
Why We Honor Malcolm X By Linwood F. Tauheed Malcolm X, the man who began his life as Malcolm Little and ended it as El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, has disappointed his critics by not slipping into obscurity. From the time of Malcolm's death in 1965, America's media, has tried to make Malcolm disappear from the memory of African Americans, first by neglect, and then by painting him as a wild-eyed, slick-talking, purveyor of hate. However, the media, which has increasingly been looked upon with skepticism by many African Americans, could not convince us that there was nothing to learn from the life of a man who had transformed himself from Malcolm Little, street hustler and drug addict; into Malcolm X, articulate, brilliant and upright leader, and then transformed himself again into El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, internationally recognized spokesman for Africans under American oppression. To the criticism against the stamp, raised in the Kansas City Star's January 22 nd (1999) editorial "Stamp Silliness," that Malcolm should be abhorred because he did not believe in a nonviolent agenda, we can respond simply by asking, "Where was the nonviolent agenda of the Founding Fathers of this Country?" That same editorial compared Malcolm to George Wallace. This is silly! Those who were hurt by Wallace can be documented into the thousands. Instead, for Malcolm, those who were inspired by his example of transformation to do the same in their lives, are thousands still. Malcolm was a faithful husband and devoted father, uncompromising, tireless and fearless champion for what he believed in. For this he paid the ultimate price for his devotion to our liberation struggle. What an example for us today.
