Context: Because of her support for the Black Panther Party, actress Jean Seberg was targeted for 'neutralization' by the FBI's COINTELPRO effort. SAC Richard W. Held, the author of the request, went on to become SAC San Francisco at the time of the bombing of Earth First activist Judi Bari. He subsequently retired from the Bureau to become Head of Security for Visa International.
All of these doucments and many, many more can be found in The Cointelpro Papers by Ward Churchill and Jim Vander Wall (South End Press, 1990) ISBN 0-89608-359-4.
Request from Special Agent in Charge LA to FBI headquarters, asking that Seberg's preganancy, supposedly by a BPP member, be publicized in an effort to 'cheapen' the image of Ms. Seberg.

Headquarters approves the request, with some modifications.
A gossip columnist writes an innuendo laced article. Jean Seberg attempts to commit suicide, which results in the premature birth and eventual death of the fetus. In the following years she tries to commit suicide on or near the anniversary of the death of her chill and ultimately succeeds.
SAC LA forwards the article to headquarters. Mission accomplished!

Edgar Hoover, Jean Seberg lives on in a new documentary BY GARY MORRIS Jean Seberg was always more icon than actress. From her disastrous appearance as the title character in Preminger's Saint Joan (1958), to Godard's immortalizing of her face in Breathless , to her status as fashion maven in the 1960s , to her extracurricular work with the Black Panthers, Seberg's acting career seemed secondary to her cultural presence from the beginning. Her transition from prestige pictures like Bonjour Tristesse to Eurotrash epics like her husband Romain Gary's Birds in Peru and empty-headed blockbusters like Airport Writer-director Mark Rappaport, familiar from 1992's Rock Hudson's Home Movies , has devised an ingenious strategy for dealing with this complex character in From the Journals of Jean Seberg The format of the film is loosely chronological, starting with Seberg's appearance in

She went through so much crap like public scrutiny, severe depression, death of her child, many suicide attempts, hounding and harrassment by the FBI, four marriages, etc. She died at 40, suicide, body found 11 days later rotting in the back seat of a car in a Paris suburb. But she had a special quality, and voice and manner of speaking, and was a great actress and always looked cool and classic and great, and she left us the Jean Seberg hair style. Jean Seberg was born November 13, 1938, in Marshalltown, Iowa. Born, raised and ultimitely stuck in Iowa until one day when Otto Preminger brought his months long, and much-publicized contest (involving some 18,000 hopefuls) to an end when he spotted the 17 year old, corn-fed Jean. But the failure of that film (Saint Joan, 1957 interesting tangent: during the final scene, in which Joan is burned on a stake, Seberg actually took a fireball full in the face on camera, resulting in one of the most realistic and disturbing death scenes in cinema history), and the only moderate success of her next film, Bonjour Tristesse (1958), combined to stall Seberg's career, until her role in Jean-Luc Godard's landmark New Wave feature, Breathless (1959), brought her renewed international attention. She then made The Mouse That Roared with Peter Sellers, also in 1959.

She became even more of an icon from her roles in numerous French films and the tragedy of her turbulent life. Among her roles, she co-starred with Jean-Paul Belmondo in Jean-Luc Godard 's classic work of New Wave cinema, Breathless (original French title: A bout de souffle During the latter part of the , Seberg used her high-profile image to voice support for the NAACP and supported native American school groups such as the Mesquakie Bucks at the Tama settlement near her home town of Marshalltown, for whom she purchased $500 worth of basketball uniforms. http://www.saintjean.co.uk/biog.htm
By 1960 Jean Seberg was a cultural icon herself in France, influencing the Parisien fashions every bit as much as Godard and Truffaut were influencing film. Her Hollywood performances, although never considered by Seberg herself to be of any consequence, were frequently stunning, and she was often compared to silent movie queen Louise Brooks for the intelligence that she brought to her roles. Her close friends included German born Fellini actress and model turned rock star Nico (they would later work together for Phillippe Garrell) and Russian intellectual Romain Gary (creator of Ghengis Cohn), who became her second husband. ...I never knew until I came here that somebody could be really nice to you for years and really hate your guts. Happens all the time here... In the late 1960s, Jean Seberg took more roles in Hollywood, most notably opposite Warren Beatty in "Lillith". She also became increasing active in left wing political groups. Her support for the anti-racist movement the Black Panthers, along with that of Jane Fonda, was well known. But such was Seberg's influence, esspecially in Europe, that FBI director J. Edgar Hoover considered her a genuine liability, and, in 1970 when she was seven months preganant, issued instructions that Seberg be "neutralised". Thus it was that a fake letter was "leaked" to the Hollywood gossip columns, suggesting that the father of the child was not Gary, but a member of the Black Panthers. The reaction so traumatised Seberg that she gave birth prematurely, and the child was stillborn. The next day Seberg called a press conference, where she presented shocked journalists with the body of her dead
