The original "Phantasm," which Coscarelli wrote and directed, was released in 1979. It told the story of a young boy named Mike and his friends, who face off against a mysterious grave robber known as the Tall Man and his killer flying spheres. In the remake, the Tall Man travels from town to town turning the dead into his own army and using his deadly spheres against anyone who opposes him. Mike, who is developing psychic powers, and his brother try to stop him. The movie is being developed as a relaunch and as a possible trilogy about Mike's coming of age.

I hate to admit it, but I have only just become a fan of the "Phantasm" series. I remember as a kid that the movie just didn't sit right with me. This was probably due to the fact that my house was originally the town morgue and my bedroom was where they stored all the dead bodies before embalming them. Guess the whole story line kinda creeped me out and I never took the time to watch the movie completely. I would see it in bits and pieces and it never really made any sense to me. But lucky, I have always been open to suggestions. And after receiving tons of email about when I would be adding "Phantasm" to The Vault , and actually meeting and partying with the guys (Angus, Reggie, Bill, Michael, Don), I decided to give it another chance. And boy! I am glad I did. So as I stuck the videotape in the VCR, I have to admit I had my doubts. Rarely, do films get a second chance with me, because I think first impressions are so important. But in this case I was wrong. So as the film began and the theme kicked, I felt at ease. I knew the rest was pure horror movie magic and I wasn't disappointed. So what was it about "Phantasm", this time around, that warranted its position in

'The Tall Man' returns with more balls, slightly more expensive effects and a few more lines on this uneven DVD release. Ultimately it's a budget title but certain features like the ghastly scene selection menu are just offensively cheap, with the pokiest pictures ever and a nasty veneer over the whole thing.

[Full view - 56 kb In 1979 a young director - Don Coscarelli - wrote and directed his sci-Fi/horror masterpiece, Phantasm . Working on a small budget and huge aspirations, he fashioned one of the greatest horror films of all time, turning it's villan - The Tall Man - into a horror icon and it's unlikely hero - Reggie - into a cult hero. The film was very successful and would eventually spawn three surprisingly good sequels. However, as is usually the case none of them live up to the original film. Now MGM has released an excellent Collector's Edition DVD with supplements every fan will rejoice about. The Story [Full view - 33 kb The film takes place in a quiet seemingly innocent town. Jody ( Bill Thornbury ) and Reggie ( Reggie Bannister ) are attending a funeral at morningside for their best friend Tommy who apparently killed himself. Jody's little brother Mike ( Michael Baldwin ), who wasn't supposed to attend watches the proceedings from a distance with his binoculars. After the services Mike sees more than he bargained for. A mysterious Tall Man arrives in a hearse and picks Tommy's coffin up by himself and loads it into the hearse with his bare hands. Mike, bewildered by what he saw, rides out of Morningside in a hurry, but not before being spotted by the Tall Man. [Full view - 41 kb Mike visits a psychic living in the neighborhood and confesses to her about what he saw at the cemetery. The psychic tells Mike that it was all in his mind and that fear is the real killer. Still not convinced, Mike begins to notice strange things and decides to break into Morningside at night and spy on it's occupants. After encountering the Tall Man and his minions, Mike narrowly escapes and returns home. Mike tells Jody about the horrific things he saw at Morningside and that they have to do something. Jody, reluctant to believe his little brother, is finally convinced when Mike shows him his evidence. Now its up to Jody, Reggie and Mike to figure out the nature of the Tall Man and stop him.

Convention reports, fan accounts of their PHANTASM viewing marathons, etc. Angus Scrimm was recently featured in a segment of the Fox television series "Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction," which aired on June 2, 2000. In the segment, Angus portrayed "Pete," a disgruntled gravedigger (now there's a stretch!) with a nasty disposition and a little problem involving a dead woman singing to him from the grave. The segment, although brief, was excellent and gave Angus an opportunity to have a bit of fun with yet another character in the funeral industry. Watch for it in reruns if you missed it this time! Click to enlarge Our good friend Kristen Deem recently sent along some photos (taken by Ann Morgan) from the PHANTASMania film festival held in Texas on the weekend of March 31, 2000. In the photos found here, we feature PHANTASM creator/writer/director Don Coscarelli and the legendary "Tall Man" Angus Scrimm as they appeared at the festival for the autograph session. As always, many thanks to Kristen for passing these along to us! After 21 years, most everyone knows the story: Third feature film of Don Coscarelli, co-produced by special effects technician Paul Pepperman. Long before The Cell hit the big screen, Phantasm The setting is the infamous Morningside Mortuary where a really creepy mortician (Angus Scrimm) runs the place. His dark clothes and menacing expression only serve to enhance his vocal talents. When he says, "The funeral is about to begin – sir!" it’s with such ominous tones it makes you shiver. Mike (Michael Baldwin) sees some pretty weird stuff going on at Morningside but his older brother doesn’t believe him. Typical, yes. But the events that unfold as the story is told leaves you chilled, scared, wondering and perplexed. In a post-apocalyptic world people are seperated from those who lurk underground and those living in the main-land that spend all their time hooked up through virtual reality. COMMENTS I was sent this film a while back and the title didn't ring a bell, but the actors, Bruce Campbell and Angus Scrimm did. I didn't know they were in it and I figured since they were that it would be good. Well, I guess not even cool actors can save a movie, because I found it to be rather bland . Some people may also know this movie as Mindwarp. The movie started out weird showing a girl and her mother hooked up to this computer system that feeds virtual reality images into their brain. The girl gets fed up and wants to do something different. The main guy behind the virtual reality gives her, her wish to be set free into the real world and she finds out that the world has turned into a wasteland because of the war. This movie is basically a ripoff of the Omega Man and Road Warrior. The only thing I really liked about this movie was Bruce Campbell's character. He was the "road warrior" type of character; surviving in the wasteland alone fighting off deformed canabalistic human beings.
