Fabrizio Formenti, 20 Giugno 2004: Emozionante IIF di Ridley Scott È dai tempi di " Alien " e " Blade Runner Tarantino di " Kill Bill ": un film-maker, questi, dalla tecnica certamente invidiabile ma che sfortunatamente per noi tende ad allestire pretenziose e compiaciute architetture visive attorno alla vacuità delle storie che racconta (i due volumi di " Kill Bill ", per l'appunto). E allora ci si rende conto di come le definizioni virgolettate con cui abbiamo aperto questa recensione calzino meglio, decisamente meglio, indosso ad uno come Quentin Tarantino che non all'artefice primo di questo film. Veniamo dunque a "Thelma & Louise", veniamo al film che ha fruttato a Scott la prima di - a tutt'oggi - tre nomination all'Oscar per la miglior regia: l'opera che ne palesa le capacità di fine cesellatore dell'immagine e, al contempo, di sottile narratore; quella che forse più di ogni altra ci permette di cogliere, tutte assieme in un'unica composizione filmica, la completezza di registro stilistico del regista de " Il Gladiatore ".

Based on the 1999 novel by Thomas Harris, Hannibal is a fairly accurate adaptation of its literary source, which means that the problems that plagued the book also haunt the movie. However, director Ridley Scott (Gladiator) and stars Julianne Moore and Anthony Hopkins manage to elevate the production above these deficits to deliver a good, but not great, entry in the tired serial killer film genre. Hannibal continues the story begun in Lambs. Ten years have passed since Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins) escaped from custody, ten years since Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore, replacing Jodie Foster) interviewed him in a maximum-security hospital for the criminally insane in the hope that he could help her catch the serial killer known as Buffalo Bill. Lecter is now at large in Italy, gloriously at liberty in an unguarded world. But Clarice has never forgotten her encounters with the mannered yet nefarious doctor – his voice still haunts her for “at least thirty seconds of every day”. Mason Verger (an unrecognizable Gary Oldman) remembers Dr. Lecter too. Verger was his sixth victim, and, though hideously disfigured, he has survived. The solitary heir to his family's fortune, he uses the resources of his inheritance to exact his revenge. Verger realizes that in order to draw Lecter out into the open, he must dangle irresistible bait: Starling, who is currently suffering the wrath of a malicious FBI agent Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta) and the media following a botched drug raid led by Clarice that opens the picture.

Fabrizio Formenti, 27 Settembre 2003: Bello Warner, 26 Settembre 2003 Il genio della truffa di Ridley Scott Breve vacanza dai colossal per Ridley Scott, che si lascia momentaneamente alle spalle i tanto amati set multimilionari per dilettarsi con la commedia, genere per lui pressochè inedito, nonostante egli usi definire il suo "Thelma & Louise" come appartenente a quella stessa categoria cinematografica. "Il genio della truffa", in realtà, si rivela come una commedia, per così dire, "anomala", perché gli elementi tipici del genere vengono furbescamente orchestrati in maniera funzionale all'intreccio per costruire e supportare efficacemente l'alquanto inattesa piega 'drammatica' che la pellicola prende in prossimità della conclusione; una svolta che, proprio per come viene 'alimentata', arriva ad avere il giusto peso per sorprendere effettivamente lo spettatore. plot-twist Ripensiamo ai dettagli, alle parole dette dai protagonisti, a determinati atteggiamenti degli stessi, e ci accorgiamo che la sceneggiatura, per come viene rappresentata sullo schermo, fornisce piccoli segnali che possono consentire allo spettatore lungimirante di dubitare, in certi frangenti, dei fatti a cui assiste. Verrebbe quasi spontaneo attendersi un 'contro-twist' nella scena ambientata "Un anno dopo", ma la scelta degli autori di chiudere con una sorta di riflessione fra l'amaro e l'ironico sul mondo delle truffe è molto apprezzabile, ed è stato giusto, in chiusura, restituire al film quell'atmosfera rilassata che lo aveva caratterizzato all'inizio.

Until Gladiator restored my love for Ridley Scott, he probably wouldn't have shown up on these pages. Alien and Blade Runner are two of my favorite films ever. But those were both made 20 years ago, almost my entire life. Since then he's made a lot of mediocre movies. None of them all that bad, but none were really that good either. "All they'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us wanted, where have I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got?" Los Angeles 2019, a mish-mash of cultures, a bleak look at the future. Blade Runner (1982), is easily my favorite film of Ridley's and it is always on my top-ten all time list. A renowned sci-fi classic, one of the most influential films of the genre. Beautifully photographed, great f/x (models and matte paintings look better than much of the CG stuff today), well acted, incredible art direction, and on and on. These are only the technical aspects of the film, what really makes Blade Runner great is the ideas behind it. What makes us human? Why are the replicants any less human than us? They have thoughts, feelings, dreams and goals. They are not evil, they only come back to Earth with the hope that they can somehow lengthen their short life spans. Deckard is forced into hunting them down. When he kills them it's heart-breaking, they are completely innocent. They are so convincingly human that Deckard falls in love with Rachel who he knows to be a replicant. We are even left with the thought that Deckard may be a replicant himself.

Mentre in Terra Santa le Crociate sono in pieno svolgimento e Gerusalemme è il centro d'interesse del mondo, il giovane maniscalco francese Baliano, fresco della perdita della moglie e del ritrovamento del padre, decide di seguire le orme e gli ideali del genitore appena riabbracciato, il Barone di Ibelin, e parte alla volta del "Regno dei Cieli" per dare seguito a ciò che egli aveva iniziato. Il sentimento forse più rappresentativo dello stato d'animo dello spettatore, quando le luci in sala si riaccendono sullo scorrere dei titoli di coda e le due ore e venticinque minuti di proiezione sono trascorse, è l'indifferenza nei confronti di ciò che si è visto in questo "Kingdom of Heaven".
