Stratford Fesival of Canada, April - November, 2005
"Most of the cast is excellent, however, with Bruce Dow taking the crown for his complex and emotionally devastating performance as the Baker. ... Dow becomes the focus, providing a new angle on the show."
Richard Ouzounian, Variety
"... while Bruce Dow simply and breathtakingly develops. His is the character who learns and suffers most; the emotional core of this production is his last encounter with his father to whom Peter Donaldson, classical casting paying off in spades, brings unprecedented power."
Robert Cushman, The National Post
"But the evening's moral centre and most telling performance is delivered by Bruce Dow as the childless Baker whose quest for an offspring sets the whole story in motion. Dow's solo of recoginition, "No More," is delivered with a bravery and emotional honesty that is truly compelling."
Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star
"Finally, some action! The current Stratford season received a much-needed jolting spark of creativity, vision and inspiration Friday night when Peter Hinton's production of Into the Woods opened to (for once) a justly deserved standing ovation.
What makes it all come together, however, is the glorious singing and stylized acting. Dow as the baker gives his character much more than the longing you hear so clearly and movingly in his voice."

DESCRIPTION
A singing and dancing Gershwin jubilee! This “new” musical comedy of bootleggers, cads, and chorus girls includes such Gershwin standards as “He Loves and She Loves,” “Let’s Kiss and Make Up,” “The Sweet and Low Down,” “Heaven on Earth,” and of course, “They All Laughed!” AUTHORS GEORGE GERSHWIN (Music) - George Gershwin was born on September 26, 1898. In 1919, theatregoers heard his first full Broadway score (LA, LA LUCILLE) and Al Jolson popularized “Swanee,” with lyrics by Irving Caesar, his first big song hit. In 1924, George composed RHAPSODY IN BLUE, the same year he formed the songwriting partnership with his older brother Ira. By the mid-’30s, as America’s premier composer, he had written the CONCERTO IN F, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS and the SECOND RHAPSODY. 1935 saw the debut of his masterpiece, PORGY AND BESS, written with DuBose Heyward and Ira. In his last year, George wrote the scores to three films: “Shall We Dance,” “A Damsel in Distress” and “Goldwyn Follies.”
IRA GERSHWIN (Lyrics) - Ira Gershwin, the first songwriter to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize (OF THEE I SING), was born on December 6, 1896. Ira teamed up with George to write the scores for LADY, BE GOOD!, TIP- TOES, OH, KAY!, STRIKE UP THE BAND, and GIRL CRAZY, among others. Their musical collaboration, which lasted until George’s death, climaxed with PORGY AND BESS. In addition to his brother, Ira collaborated with many of the great songwriters of Broadway and Hollywood, including Kurt Weill (LADY IN THE DARK), Vernon Duke (ZIEGFELD FOLLIES OF 1936) and Harold Arlen (A STAR IS BORN). In 1959, he published the widely acclaimed “Lyrics on Several Occasions,” a compendium of many of his lyrics with annotations, observations and anecdotes.

Small theater! Exquisite music, of course, beautiful story. Cons None Full Review Bravo! I had the very pleasure of going to a preview showing of ‘Jane Eyre~ The Musical’ , Thursday evening at the Brooks-Atkinson Theater, where it will be opening in just a few weeks. What a wonderful show! As many of us have read Jane Eyre in High School, and as well, may have seen the black and white film starring the then svelte Orson Welles, or the more recent version. starring William Hurt as Mr. Rochester. This is a wonderfully intricate story, and the musical seems to tell the story as well, if not more emotionally than either of the movies. The cast was: Marla Schaffel as Jane Eyre James Barbour as Mr. Rochester

Pros
Beautiful and haunting score, incredible cast, fantastic transition from novel to stage Cons None The Bottom Line Jane Eyre is a great novel and an outstanding musical. Marla Schaffel and James Barbour's performances are breathtaking. Amazing lighting! Phenomenal cast! Haunting and beautiful music! Don't miss it! Full Review Many stories have been transferred from novel to blockbuster stage musical productions. Recent notables include Phantom of the Opera, Scarlet Pimpernel, Jekyll and Hyde and Les Miserable. I have loved them all but none have been as true to the book as Jane Eyre. True they could not fit everything in but I hadn't read the book in seven years and I knew that many of the lines came right from the source text. As for the cast, Marla Schaffel IS Jane Eyre. She plays the role with youth, intelligence and spirit. She rarely leaves the stage the entire show and even when Jane is hiding in the shadows you can sense she is there. Her voice soars through this extraordinary score and she will surely get Tony nominations for her role.

There are few things more exciting for a reviewer than the element of surprise. Such was the case in attending Tom D'Angora 's show "Divas I've Done" at Don't Tell Mama last week, directed by Michael Duling with Tracy Stark as musical director. A self-confessed "show queen," this newcomer to cabaret who is sure to get lots of attention is very tall, handsome, and openly gay. D'Angora's charismatic and kinetic performance style endeared him to the delighted SRO audience. With backup vocalists Noel Cody Stephanie Harwood , and Cara LaGreen
