A CurtainUp A CurtainUp LA Review Jane Eyre
By Jack Holland
Jane Eyre, the musical. It may sound a bit strange to people who know the novel or have seen the movie but as it turns out, it doesn't seem to have been a bad idea. Although not perfect and a bit long at points, this musical is entertaining. Paul Gordon, songwriter and lyricist, got the idea in 1991 after picking up a paperback version of the novel to read on a flight. He sent a demo of songs to John Caird, whom he had admired but never met. John Caird along with set designer John Napier, have had a long history together. Jane Eyre marks their seventh theatrical collaboration. Their six previous collaborations were for the Royal Shakespeare Company ( Nicholas Nickleby, Les Miserables, The Merry Wives of Windsor

51. We'll Meet Tomorrow - Titanic
I also spent entirely too much time watching marla schaffel, but she s just such a marla schaffel, when Alison asked her to sign the Jane Eyre CD
http://www.theatre-musical.com/titanic/feb24.html
Victoria Clark wasn't near as hyper for the whole show as she was last time, and Bill Buell was just a little weird...Alison asked me if he was supposed to be drunk. :-) He just kind of slurred most of his lines. It was strange. Anyway, Barrett's song was really good, though I had to keep laughing at whoever was stoking right in front of us, 'cause the poor guy had a heck of a time getting the boiler door shut each time. :-) I spent most of "What a Remarkable Age This Is" either watching Adam as Mr. Latimer or else watching Jennifer Piech over in the corner. "Lady's Maid" was good, though I didn't think the chemistry was as good between Jennifer and Christopher as it had been between her and Clarke. "The Proposal" was lovely...not quite as good as Brian's, but I wasn't expecting it to be! :-) "Doing the Latest Rag" was a blast to watch...my eyes were glued to Adam in his plaid outfit. :-) And then the final scene of the act is just a favourite of mine altogether...the sets are too amazing, and it's just a wonderful scene. I don't think I've mentioned yet that I wasn't a huge fan of Paul Kandel as Ismay. I had trouble understanding a lot of what he said, even though I knew what he was going to say! "Dressed in Your Pajamas..." was really good...I adored Henry Stram's (Etches') expressions during the song. I didn't notice this the first time, but he's obviously aware of exactly what's happening, and is doing his best to keep it in and avoid alarming all his treasured passengers. It was very well done. "The Blame" was okay, though I enjoyed it much more last time, just because of the actors. The whole "to the lifeboats" bit was very moving, as always, though I didn't actually start crying yet. "Still" was fabulous...I really don't like the song on CD that much, but it really gets to me on stage. "Mr. Andrews' Vision" was actually better than I had been anticipating, and aside from being a little concerned when Matthew fell over the piano bench, I enjoyed it quite a bit. :-) And, of course, the finale was incredible!!! I was crying quite hard by the very end, especially thanks to Marla and Stephen, who were so moving in that scene.

52. Brave Enough For Love - Jane Eyre
I was also really excited to see the wonderful marla schaffel again, after having seen her in Titanic a couple of times before.
http://www.theatre-musical.com/janeeyre/nov11.html
I was both really excited and really nervous about seeing this show – excited because I'd been waiting to see it for years, and nervous that it wasn't going to be as wonderful as the show I'd been waiting to see for years. Kristal came along too, because I had hyped the show up for so long, so I was a little bit worried that she wouldn't like it either. I was also really excited to see the wonderful Marla Schaffel again, after having seen her in Titanic a couple of times before. She is just one of my very favourite female performers, and she was absolutely brilliant in this show. She's onstage nearly every minute of the show, and absolutely shines for each one of them. The show starts in Mrs. Reed’s house – not with her parent's death. Jane is not locked in the room, but is playing in the attic with her rag doll and her book, when John comes up and taunts her, wrecks the book she’s reading, and then blames it on her. When she denies it to Mrs. Reed, she is taken to Lowood. There is a new motif for Jane, called "Sweet Liberty", that seems to replace "Silent Rebellion" from the old show. This is all in a new song called "Orphan". She lashes out at Mrs. Reed in front of the class when she is introduced – I always assumed that scene took place at Mrs. Reed’s house, like it does in the book. Oh, and the adult Jane is present for all of this, watching. Helen is strapped for speaking to Jane while she is being punished, and then sings "Forgiveness" as they are cleaning the room. She also introduces the "Brave Enough for Love" theme here. Jane and Helen have a place in the woods where they go and talk together, but Jane is left playing alone once Helen is struck with typhus. "My Maker" is quite a bit shorter and much changed, but still very moving. I liked Jayne Paterson as Helen, but I don’t think anybody could totally compare to Angela Lockett's purity and sweetness of voice. Young Jane goes to Helen's gravesite, and says how she does it everyday, and this is where the transformation is made to the adult Jane, who still visits the grave daily. This is also where the introduction of the chorus into the show takes place.

MY FAIR LADY is based on a play called Pygmalion , which was written by George Bernard Shaw in 1912. The play was the product of two inspirations: Shaw’s intense interest in phonetics, and his desire to create the perfect vehicle for one of London’s leading actresses, Mrs. Patrick Campbell. The play was a huge success. In 1938, the play was made into a film version by producer and director, Gabriel Pascal. In the early 1950s, Pascal decided to create a new stage version of Pygmalion

      Description:
Jane Eyre for the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously by . It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and released prior to the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character of Jane Eyre: The Musical Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery. The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics as
