Stouthearted Woman
Jane Eyre 's Mary Stout chats with Raven Snook about flop musicals, swim class, and Cherry Jones.
By: Raven Snook
I am in awe of Mary Stout, the exuberant, comic character woman who has received raves for her portrayal of the housekeeper, Mrs. Fairfax, in Broadway's Jane EyreThe Musical . A seasoned singing actress, Stout is thrilled to be playing one of her most intricate roles to date, and many of those who've seen Jane Eyre feel that she may be in line for a Tony Award nomination. But Stout doesn't think about the future; she's too busy having fun in the present, as indicated by the animated way in which she chatted with me over the phone recently for our TheaterMania interview.

To find out more about this world premier production of Let Me Sing , please visit charlotterep.org or visit ArtSavant's feature on the subject: Let Me Sing We will surprise you. Come back soon to see how... After the Sunday preview show, we were able to meet with Michael Bush, Michael Aman, and Joel Silberman, the creators of Let Me Sing , as well as actress Marla Schaffel. Let Me Sing is about the evolution of American music and American attitudes, which began to coalesce at the beginning of the twentieth century. In a previous interview , you’ve explained the nascence of this play. We’d like to talk about how you three creators began to work on it once the idea was born. MB: The truth is, I had probably said it to two years of classes: that something was bubbling around in my brain, and it was either a book or a show. Michael (Aman) was taking my class. MA: I was getting a degree in dramaturgy at Brooklyn College. He said to me, after class one day, "I'm thinking of turning this into a musical about the history of musicals." I asked to work on it as a dramaturg, and do the research that I thought would be required. He said to put a list of songs that I thought would be in this show, and gave me another assignment to do Irving Berlin alone. MB: The first idea was that, if I just did the songs in a particular order, they would tell a story. So we were making that list of songs when Joel happened to call one day.

Jane Eyre Theatre Review by Thomas Burke NEW YORK - December 11, 2000
Jane Eyre , which opened yesterday afternoon at the Brooks Atkinson theatre, has been brought to the stage as a musical of majestic grace and more than a little grandeur. A successful dramatic interpretation of the ever-popular novel by Charlotte Bronte, Jane is also blessed with a luxuriant score, haunting and memorable music, and crisp, intelligent lyrics which speak from the very heart of this tragic and romantic story. John Caird, who wrote the book, and Paul Gordon, who wrote the music and lyrics, have come up with a major contender come Spring’s award time. True to its 19th century origins, Jane Eyre is a lavish Victorian banquet of emotions; passion, cruelty, revenge, repression, courage, emotional and physical abuse, faith and forgiveness, and love - most of all the eternal healing power of an all-consuming love. Jane ’s story is that of a plain yet spirited girl, orphaned at an early age, who becomes governess at Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with Edward Rochester, the master of the house. Though Jane’s sharp wit and defiant nature clash with Rochester’s temperament, the two quickly develop a deep bond. But, Rochester’s past, a dark secret imprisoned at Thornfield, threatens to destroy their love just as it begins, as it ultimately destroys Thornfield Hall itself. There are many exceptionally fine performances here, not the least of which are Lisa Musser as Young Jane, who has a commanding and touching stage presence far beyond what one might expect from an actress of her tender years, and Andrea Bowen as the charming and irrepressible Adele.

Susan is currently finishing her book which chronicles more than a dozen of the most important lessons she's learned, which she credits with propelling her from a small-town girl (born in Abingdon, Illinois, pop. 3,500) to taking her place in the CEO suite of one of the world's largest companies as one of America's highest-paid women executives. She reveals insights into everything from career management to the essentials of leadership that have allowed to her to achieve a pioneering career as Accenture's first woman partner. The book promises to be an informational and inspirational must-read for the next generation of women leaders. Below you'll find a few excerpts offering you a sneak preview: I opened the issue of FORTUNE magazine that listed America's highest-paid women executives, based on publicly available data [as part of a private company, my compensation remained private]. As I scanned the list, I realized that I, too, was among a very important group of women. It suddenly came to me what a successful journey it had been over the 36 years that took me from Abingdon, Illinois, population 3500, to the CEO suite of the world's leading management consulting and technology services company. Whoever thought that a one-time Girl Scout Being an investor in a Broadway show provided me with one of the best examples of what success in managing change is all about.

NYC Weather A CurtainUp Review Jane Eyre, The Musical Marla Schaffel and James Barbour (Joan Marcus) "Reader, I married him." Those are my favorite words from Charlotte Brontë's granddaddy of all gothic romances, Jane Eyre. What's all this got to do with Jane Eyre, the Musical. To paraphrase, Jane "Reader I liked it." Paul Gordon score is lyrical and often quite moving. Though some may want to write it off as easy listening, too heavily reprised pop music, the sound is musical theater that will hold up after several replays of the CD. It has for me! Topping the show's considerable assets are the two leads. Marla Schaffel is a splendid, still-waters-run-deep Jane who has the voice of a true Broadway musical star. James Barbour is a handsome, Byronic Edward Rochester who more than matches Schaffel's acting and singing skills. In fact, as good as Ms. Schaffel is, the narrative doesn't really catch fire until she meets her destiny at Rochester's estate, Thornfield Hall, and Barbour explodes onto the stage.
