Biomedical Frontiers: SUMMER 1995, Vol.2, No.3
Special Report: Medical Devices Development at Columbia

Research Advance: A vein effort Varicose veins -abnormally dilated and discolored veins on the leg - are one of the most frequent blood vessel problems, affecting 15 percent to 20 percent of the adult population. While varicose veins usually do not require medical treatment, unless ulcers develop from poor blood flow, people often want cosmetic surgery to remove them. Surgical stripping of the veins and sclerotherapy (collapsing the veins chemically or with laser) are the two most common methods surgeons use to smooth the leg surface from the veins. Sclerotherapy takes advantage of either a chemical or laser heat energy to bring on natural clotting and inflammatory processes within the blood vessel to close it down. Surgery entails cutting out and removing the veins, which are not vital vessels. These approaches, however, leave scar tissue and varicose veins will recur in up to 30 percent of the cases treated with sclerotherapy. Drs. Steven Libutti, Mehmet Oz (Irving Clinical Research Scholar), Roy Chuck, and Lawrence Bass of CPMC have developed a new patent-pending sclerotherapy technique, available for licensing, that is less invasive than surgery and causes less scarring than current sclerotherapy methods, the physicians say.

Biomedical Frontiers: SUMMER 1995, Vol.2, No.3
Special Report: Medical Devices Development at Columbia by Herbert Pardes, M.D., Vice President for Health Sciences Dean, Faculty of Medicine College of Physicians and Surgeons This issue of Biomedical Frontiers focuses on devices. Devices are fundamental to modern medical practice and Columbia physicians and scientists are devising new substances, machines, and other products with highly specialized medical applications. Several of these are highlighted in this issue. Dr. Michael Terman has developed an electronic dawn/dusk simulator, which is bringing relief to people who suffer from depression in the winter and fall due to light deprivation. Drs. Steven Libutti, Mehmet Oz, Roy Chuck, and Lawrence Bass have devised a new sclerotherapy technique for removing varicose veins. Dr. Shanta Modak is attempting to make existing devices safer by coating implanted medical devices with a patented mixture of antimicrobials. Dr. Judah Weinberger is at work on a method for preventing restenosis following angioplasty. Drs. Howard A. Israel and Steven B. Syrop have developed a jaw exercise device to ease the pain of temporomandibular joint problems. Sara Ann Gusik hasn't been spending her time in a laboratory inventing new medical devices, but her contribution is just as important. As associate director of Columbia Innovation Enterprise at the Health Sciences, Ms. Gusik is responsible for making sure innovative products get from the research laboratory into the marketplace.

From 1936 - 1955, there were several polls conducted to identify the popularity of the silver screen cowboys. The polls were sponsored by two movieland trade publications, the Motion Picture Herald and Boxoffice . Below are the year-by-year results for each.
In most cases, the list reflects a 'Top Ten' result, but during a few of the years, the results are less than 10. Be aware that in some years, the polls would list as many as twenty or more western heroes. However, I have limited the listing below to the Top Ten for each year.
Since the polls did not begin until the mid 1930s, early sound western favorites like Tom Mix, Ken Maynard, Hoot Gibson and Tim McCoy are not well represented in the poll data.
In addition to the most popular male cowboy stars, there were other individuals and groups that placed in these polls - included are George "Gabby" Hayes, Smiley Burnette, Dale Evans, Andy Devine, Leo Carillo, the Three Mesquiteers, the Sons of the Pioneers, more.

Meet Me In West Palm Beach, Florida
By Chuck Baldwin
Food For Thought From The Chuck Wagon
August 16, 2005 I would like to invite any and all readers who live within driving distance of West Palm Beach, Florida to join me for a special meeting on Thursday, August 18, at 7pm at the West Palm Beach Marriott Hotel. The hotel is located at 1001 Okeechobee Blvd., near City Place, I-95, Exit 70, East about a half mile. The meeting is being sponsored by the Constitution Party of Florida. Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door; the general public is welcome to attend. Jack McClain is the coordinator for the event and can be reached at 561-741-7592. I am often invited to speak at various meetings around the country and, sadly, am not always able to accept those invitations due to scheduling constraints. However, I am happy to be able to accept this invitation and look forward to being with my good friend Jack McClain and a host of friends who will join us at the West Palm Beach Marriott Hotel. I would especially enjoy meeting those people who read my weekly editorials. If you live close enough to attend this meeting, I would count it an honor to meet you personally. By all means, be sure to introduce yourself to me when you come, and let me know you read this column.

"According to HealthGrades, the health-care-rating organization that conducted the study, needless deaths averaged 195,000 a year in 2000, 2001, and 2002. "The study by Health Grades Inc., a health-care consulting firm in Colorado that rates hospitals, estimated that medical errors in U.S. hospitals contributed to almost 600,000 patient deaths over the past three years, double the number if deaths from a study published in 2000 by the Institute of Medicine."- The Wall Street Journal
