"Staining Properties of De-Epithelialized Human Amniotic Membrane" (Cornea) evaluated the in vitro staining properties of de-epithelialized human amniotic membrane using five vital dyes. The study notes that the best candidates for the assistance of intra-operative visualization of de-epithelialized HAM are the higher concentration 1.0% fluorescein sodium and 0.5% lissamine green. “Since its market introduction in November 2002, the AmbioDry technology has elevated surgical performance and outcomes for ocular surface reconstruction procedures”, states Erich Ziegler, Vice President. “Our focus in now on innovating surgical techniques and methods. Dr. Chuck’s clinical and research efforts are moving this pursuit forward.”

Home Search Appointments Contact As a university medical center, UCI serves the health care needs of Orange County, while advancing medical science worldwide. In laboratories and clinics throughout the hospital campus, dozens of important discoveries have contributed to the quality and quantity of the years we live. The newest groundbreaking work performed by UCI researchers promises to have a major impact on medicine.
"For the last three years it’s been impossible to read or drive a car due to macular degeneration, one of the leading causes of blindness for older people. I travel to UCI Medical Center all the way from Washington just to participate in a clinical trial for a new telescopic implant. I’m hoping it will help me see better and am thrilled to be a part of finding a cure for this disease." – Roy Johnson, Washington State
Clinical Trials - The purpose of a clinical trial is to develop and evaluate new drug therapies and other treatments that may be safer or more effective than those currently available. As one of the top research facilities in the world, UCI Medical Center is a leading participant in these important studies. Major projects are underway, involving patients with cancer, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and many other diseases. Visit

Harvester May Make Tough Surgical Procedure Easier,
Correct Blindness Caused by Chemical Damage, Eye Diseases
Irvine, Calif. February 28, 2001 -
- What is now a difficult, last-resort surgical procedure to restore vision may be easier and more successful, thanks to a new eye stem cell harvesting device created by researchers at UC Irvine's College of Medicine. The device, called a "limbal stem cell harvester," can recover stem cellsso-called immortal cells that scientists are studying for their ability to replenish damaged or diseased tissues. The device, if effective in clinical trials, may make easier a laborious and often unsuccessful operation in which stem cells are transplanted into the cornea. A study on the harvester's performance appears in the March issue of the American Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr. Roy Chuck, assistant professor of ophthalmology and an eye surgeon at the UCI Medical Center, and his colleagues found that the device quickly took stem cells from corneas of deceased donors in high enough volumes to increase the odds of a successful operation and vision restoration. The operation currently is performed on patients whose corneas have been damaged by chemicals or from such eye diseases as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a rare disorder that causes blindness. "Stem cell transplants into the cornea have corrected blindness in many patients, but it is still considered a last-ditch effort to save the patient's eyes. The procedure's success rate is very low," Chuck said.

Eyes Without a Face:
Stem Cell Research and Corneal Implants
Part III—"A Stem Cell Solution?"
by
Kari Mergenhagen , University at Buffalo, State University of New York I was nervous about my visit to the University Medical Center. I could sense that even John had some reserved optimism. Dr. Star had reviewed my medical records before we arrived. He began by explaining why my past cornea implants had failed. "In the normal eye the epithelial cells of a cornea wear away through ordinary eye movements and are replaced by stem cells located in the corneal limbus. Lucy, your eyes were extensively damaged by the heat generated in the accident that destroyed your vision. You lack the necessary stem cells to maintain a healthy cornea. This is the reason cornea implants have been unsuccessful for you." "But I could see for a while after I had the implants, then I would return to blindness," I responded puzzled. "Initially you may have regained some sight, but after several weeks or months the epithelial cells on the donor cornea would slough off. Without stem cells, aging epithelial cells cannot be replaced on the donor cornea," Dr. Star continued. "In your situation, Lucy, stem cells will be needed, preferably from a close relative." "Lucy's gone through a lot emotionally with the failure of the past cornea transplants," John interjected. "Why do you think this will work if all of the past transplants failed?"
