Dimecres, 15 d'abril de 1998 El 1998 se celebra el 30 aniversari d'un dels films més significatius del terror que encara podem dir contemporani, un dels últims models ineludibles a l'hora de parlar d'aportacions "originals" al gènere. Va ser "La nit dels morts vivents", i tot i que el seu director, George A. Romero, no ha aconseguit mai superar l'impacte d'aquell primer film de la seva carrera, tampoc no ha estat persona d'un sol encert. En la llista de pel·lícules estrenades a Catalunya hi trobem "Creepshow" i "Atracció diabòlica", que contenen idees excepcionals i una precisió exemplar en la posada en escena, cosa que també podem dir del film que avui us presentem, "La meitat fosca", una de les millors adaptacions de Stephen King i una de les millors obres derivades de "L'estrany cas del doctor Jekyll i Mr. Hide", de Robert Louis Stevenson. Per resumir-ho en poques paraules: un Romero seriós, com ho va ser "La nit dels morts vivents". Marco Bovino, 21 Giugno 2005: Appassionato Uip, 15 Luglio 2005 La terra dei morti viventi di George A. Romero Vent'anni dopo "Il giorno degli zombi", Romero resuscita il mito dei non morti da lui stesso creato nel '68 con "La notte dei morti viventi" e proseguito dieci anni dopo con "Zombi". Romero mantiene intatta la sua matrice sociologica profondamente critica (in qualsiasi situazione la specie umana brilla per egoismo e cupidigia), il suo humour macabro (il locale dove la gente si fa immortalare affianco a non morti incatenati), la sua truculenza (il fedele Tom Savini è uno zombi col machete) ma la sceneggiatura non è sempre all'altezza ed evidenzia una sorta di collage realizzato con ritagli di "Mad Max", "Il buio si avvicina", " 28 giorni dopo " e altri. Se a partire da "La notte dei morti viventi" la dimensione metaforica del regista risaltava nella cinematografia dell'epoca e risultava sotterranea ed efficace, ora l'impressione è che, come le sue stesse creature, essa sia giunta ormai in superficie perdendo vigore e spessore. Romero stesso sembra accorgersene e in questo quarto capitolo tenta di rianimare il filone e di ribaltare definitivamente la prospettiva del binomio vivi-non morti, umanizzandoli, riducendoli a vittime del sadismo dilagante e mostrando dettagli di una normale "non vita". Così, tra ex musicisti che non cessano di "suonare", apprendisti pistoleri che imparano a sparare e una coppia che avanza mano nella mano, gli zombi evocano un'insospettabile e sconcertante sensazione di tenerezza.

Romero, infatti, che non ha mai scritto sceneggiature memorabili né è mai stato un gran dialoghista, è sempre stato però un abilissimo creatore di atmosfere che esulano un po’ dagli stereotipi horror più classici (e vieti); i tre precedenti film della saga zombica, così come il concetto stesso di “zombi”, generano più angoscia che paura, ossia un malessere meditato e profondo che affonda le sue radici in un solido substrato allegorico e metaforico. Night of the Living Dead was the first film of Romero's that I saw. Man, was I hooked. Slowly I have worked through the whole catalog. There have been some really weird ones like Season of the Witch . There have been some that were alright like The Crazies The Dark Half and Creepshow . And of course some that are classics like Night of the Living Dead Dawn of the Dead , and Day of the Dead which is my least favorite of his "living dead" movie, but still a great zombie film. I can't get enough of the living dead, but unfortunately, there are so many exceptionally bad zombie movies out there. Luckily for the fans, there are a few that have helped to fill the staple of our zombie diet and at the top of our nutrition chart is "Dawn of the Dead". One of my favorites, and definitely one of my all-time top five horror films is George Romero's “Dawn of the Dead.” I can remember seeing it for the first time as though it were yesterday. Unfortunately, when "Dawn" was released in theaters (1978), I was way too young to go see it , but it was the first video I rented when I bought a VCR. Earlier I had instantly fallen in loved with "Night of the Living Dead," having first seen it on MTV of all places. This was back when MTV was forced to come up with alternative programming, because they only had about 10 videos that they showed a million times a day. On the weekends, they used to run cult movies (Remember "Reefer Madness?" made me want to inhale.) and always played NOTLD right around Halloween. Once I’d saw it, I was hooked on zombies.
