Featured: July 1998 Author: Phil Spangenberger (pictured to right) Title: GunSmoke/Repeat Seven Times: The Spencer is Back! A Legendary Civil War Veteran Gets a Full-Dress Resurrection as an Eminently Shootable Centerfire. Pages: #91 - #92 .....Now, however, a fully functional, authentically detailed reproduction of the M1860 or M1865 Spencer–in either military carbine, rifle or custom sporting form–is being produced by the L.Romano Rifle Co. of Pennellville, New York. Based on the sample Model 1860 cavalry carbine that was sent to me for evaluation, I’d say that Larry Romano, owner and operator of the firm, has done an excellent job. Due to the shortage of ammo, we were only able to fire a couple of serious groups at the 50-yard target to get a feel for the Spencer’s abilities. However, the carbine revealed excellent accuracy at that range. As a matter of fact, the very first three-shot group measured just 1 5/16 inches in the black. Overall, our shooting suggested the carbine could average groupings of around two inches at the range. During some plinking, both Bill and I were impressed at the Spencer’s handling and accuracy potential. Loading through the buttstock by inserting the spring-loaded tube, levering, cocking and ejecting were all accomplished smoothly, illustrating why the Spencer enjoyed such popularity with the horse soldiers of yesteryear.

Robin Romano, an assistant sports editor at the Boston Globe known for inspiring colleagues and friends with her passion for sports, her flair for journalism and a penchant for off-key crooning, died of cancer in January at her home in Marblehead, Mass. She was 45 and had been an active APSE member at the Globe and the Orange County Register. A longer version of this story appeared last month in the Boston Globe. One of the first women to cover major sports events, Romano had held writing and editing positions in many of America's best newspaper sports departments. She was drawn to sports journalism by her late father, Anthony, who for 50 years was a reporter, copy editor, and sports editor at the Salem Evening News until he retired in 1984. Romano began her career in 1973 with a co-op student job at the Patriot Ledger in Quincy. She went on to cover the 1975 World Series and 1976 NBA playoffs for that paper. "You could see instantly [that she would be] great," said Fred Turner, who hired Romano in Quincy and now is sports editor at the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. "She started interviewing for the co-op spot, and I said to myself, ‘This one's going to make it.' "

Stephen King Ray Romano: Open to One More Season There seems to be a difference of opinion over at "Everybody Loves Raymond." Is this the last season or not? No two people seem to have the same answer. Let's cut to Ray Romano , the show's star. What does he think? "This is supposed to be the last season," he says, "but we have to see what happens through the year. We have until January to decide." He'd better tell co-star Patricia Heaton , who is looking for work on Broadway and developing her own sitcom. Ditto for Brad Garrett , who's doing an indie movie in the summer and working on his own show too. In fact, Garrett may even get a "Raymond" spin-off, with several of that show's writers pitching in to get it off the ground. Meanwhile, Romano told me at HBO's big post-Emmy Awards party last night (see below) he would not be recording a second comedy album to follow up his self-titled one from last year.

Excerpt from Jenny's Jr. Iditarod Journal:
Saturday/Sunday February 28-March 1, 1998
It was -5 degrees when we left home in Willow, but warmed considerably by race time. Mushers needed to be at the race site (Aurora Dog Track, Big Lake, AK) and ready for their sled bag checks by 9:00 AM. I arrived at 8:30, pulled the sled off the truck and organized my gear. I unloaded my dogs, gave them water, and checked repeatedly to make sure I was ready for my adventure. I knew once I was on the trail I would stop worrying and just enjoy the run and if I were missing something I would just deal with it. But in the last moments before the race I was racking my mind trying to be sure not to forget anything. I had my cooker, dog dishes, cooler, and 20 lbs. of dog food plus trail snacks. I added the required 3000 calories human food plus snacks, two head lamps, snowshoes, ax, sleeping bag, 40 booties, spare gloves and socks, lighter, HEET, rain gear, knife, and many other items I would need on the trail.

The Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America is the culinary industry's Hall of Fame, recognizing food and beverage professionals for significant and lasting achievements in their field. The program was begun in 1984 by Cook's magazine and Restaurant Business. When Cook's ceased publication in 1990, The James Beard Foundation successfully negotiated with the magazine's owners to continue the Who's Who program. As of May 1998 there are 172 members of the Who's Who, all leaders in the culinary industry. In 1991 The James Beard Foundation established The James Beard Hall of Fame to commemorate culinary professionals who died prior to the establishment of the Who's Who.
