Hailing the weatherman
Al Roker, Katie Couric and Matt Lauer Richard Gere Surprise! A hundred of Al Roker 's closest friends threw a blitzkrieg 50th-birthday party for the "Today Show" weatherman on Wednesday at Blue Smoke. "I'm supposed to be his ruse tonight," Bryant Gumbel told me just before Roker walked in. "He thinks he's coming here to have dinner with me." He added, "Did you know that Al went to a Catholic military school?" "I didn't even know they made them," chimed in Star Jones "He was practicing for the Crusades, I guess," continued Gumbel. Spike Lee Willard Scott Ann Curry , NBC News President Neal Shapiro and Tony Bennett , who serenaded Roker with "Blue Skies," also offered their best wishes. But the highlight came when

Dyson attacks Cosby on Today while interviewer Roker does nothing
After pointing out rabid moonbat Michael Eric Dyson's rampage on personal responsibility by black America in general, and on Bill Cosby's message of personal accountability in particular in the form of Dyson's new book " Is Bill Cosby Right ," I've received a number of e-mails, some just plain calling me stupid, others telling me that I don't know what it means to be black, and yet others telling me that I'm going to hell for selling out my birthright. There were precious few who agreed with me, even in part. Larry Elder agrees with me, and pointed out how it was open season on Cosby during a recent interview on NBC's Today where Dyson railed on in his foaming-at-the-mouth fashion, unchecked by interviewer Al Roker (yes, they got the weatherman to do the interview instead of the show's anchors; no offense to Roker, but Al's forte is usually much lighter fare). Al Roker: "Do you think there's any validity in some of the things he said?"

The X-ray room was dark and cozy. There was a stuffed turkey in the corner and a gigantic Phillips X-ray machine in the center, looking like a device for carving up little girls. A thin red light played on the table, and for a moment I channeled my inner Gert Frobe; I wanted to walk out of the room in a tux, holding a cigar, trailing a deathless clip. "When one physician says to him at the hospital, "God bless you both," Wanderhope rejoins, "You believe in him?" And the doctor answers, "And in man, which is a hell of a lot harder" (p. 197). Wanderhope's tentative movement toward religious consolations during this period seems stronger by contrast with the belligerent bitterness of Stein, a companion father whose daughter is in the same ward as Carol. To the affirmation of God by another parent Stein retorts, "What baffles me . . . is the comfort people find in the idea that somebody dealt this mess. Blind and meaningless chance seem to me so much more congenial…. Prove to me that there is a God and I will really begin to despair."

Al Roker For Father of the Year
Turns out Al Roker and I have more in common than a tendency to stuff our mouths with food. According to the NY Post , Mr. Roker recently caught his 15 year old daughter with her 19 year old boyfriend. Since she wasn't supposed to be seeing him, he started asking her questions about what else she was keeping secret.
According to friends, Courtney - in an effort to get her father off her back about Rich - told Roker that she and two of her classmates had smoked marijuana two weeks before in a car.
"[Roker] called up the school and told them we had been on school grounds and were smoking pot - and freaked out at the school, asking them what was going on at that school if [pot-smoking] was being allowed," said one of the accused.
"We got called into the principal's office on Thursday and were suspended."
One student was suspended for the remainder of the school year, a source said, while Courtney and the other girl will be back in class after a week.
But one of the kids suspended with Courtney claims they never smoked the fragrant weed. "We needed a ride to the train stop two weeks ago. Courtney and Rich offered us a ride," the youngster claims.

Al Roker on Historic Preservation
Why is historic preservation important to you?
"In any society, any culture, if you don't' know where you've been you really can't see where you're going. I think to be able to get a sense of how people lived, how people existed, where they lived, is really important. If you go to say, any place from Colonial Williamsburg...to any small home in and around America you get a sense of where we've come from and how people lived and what they did and why they did it. "I think historic preservation is one of the most important things because we're living in such a disposable society. We throw everything away. If it's old, get rid of it. And I think from our historic places to historic faces in this country, we need to make sure they're around as long as possible." Are there any places or historic sites that hold an emotional attachment for you?
"Well my father's family is from the Bahamas, and we went back there to the island he's from and the slave quarters are still standing. They've preserved them. And I think it's a real testament to what the human spirit can overcome.
