The jolly weatherman must have gotten over his trauma, because he's moving to the street level himself. This summer, he and his wife, correspondent Deborah Roberts, sold their eight-room prewar co-op on East 68th Street and bought a townhouse in the East Eighties off Lexington. Roker's broker, Spencer Means of the Corcoran Group, says the TV couple called him after attending a dinner party that Spike Lee and his wife, Tanya, threw in their Upper East Side townhouse (which had been owned by Gypsy Rose Lee). "They fell in love with the idea of townhouse living," he says. Their search took only a month "Al gets off at noon, so we could look till four every day." The house they settled on is four stories and "very, very traditional," Means says. Roker's kids, Leila and Courtney, get their own floor. Sources say Roker and Roberts sold their old place for about $1.5 million to an advertising executive; their new house, which had been occupied by the previous owners for two generations and needs work, put them back $3.25 million.

Comments on Al Roker As we well know, Al Roker, beloved anchor person on TV, had gastric bypass surgery a year ago. He has lost 100 lbs and seems to be doing well with the surgery. That is wonderful to hear. However, I have a few concerns which I will state here: 1. Roker appears to have made the decision, very much influenced by his father's admonition to "lose weight" (even though his father died of the repercussions of smoking, not obesity) and his wife's constant pressure (Deborah Roberts is a TV anchor with a body to kill for, who appears to be somewhat younger than Roker. She has admitted to bothering Roker a lot about what he ate and his weight). Making a commitment to lose weight should be a decision for the individual alone. It is not wise to make such a serious commitment especially to have one's body changed, on the pressure from those around us. Restricting food and portions is difficult. In a person with a gastric bypass, because such major modifications have been made in their body, the first year, they are not really hungry - I believe that this first year is when the body adapts to the plumbing changes - so restricting food is not difficult. But after the first year or so when they are healed up, it becomes a battle royale again. At that time, they face the same issues they faced previously. In some ways "the tool" helps (the pouch fills up etc) but in other ways, the "tool" can cause some disadvantages such as a damaged metabolism from the quick weight loss.

Adventures in Fatherhood" (Scribner) is no laugh riot. "People were surprised it wasn't funny," Roker told dadmag, "Even my wife. I thought I should start out with the serious stuff, then, like the Eleven PM News, end on an optimistic note." The book's early chapters trace Roker's bumpy road to fatherhood, first adopting Courtney, now 13, during his first marriage, later battling infertility with current wife Deborah Roberts, a correspondent for ABC News' 20/20. By book's end, though, there's a happy outcome and Roker delivers on his promise in the introduction to "share dadhood with fellow fathers. I think I've always wanted to be a father," he confesses. "It was what I was born to do." As the eldest child, Al Roker played surrogate dad to three biological and three foster siblings. "Ordering your kid brother and sister around was a definite perk. Having them pick up after you, get you a cold soda from the fridge." With hands-on experience and a role-model father, Roker gained real wisdom that makes him an ideal (never didactic) advice-giver.
