105. Roy Rogers & Dale Evans - Happy Trails
roy rogers Dale Evans Happy Trails . FROM THE FOREWORD His fan mail, ofttimes addressed simply to roy rogers, King of the Cowboys, found its way
http://www.mjq.net/truecrime/carltonstowers/happytrails.htm
Happy Trails FROM THE FOREWORD: To those of us eleven-going-on-twelve, it was a simpler time. Life's great challenges revolved around how to pass to the sixth grade, avoid girls, and scrape up the necessary nine cents cash each week for the Saturday afternoon matinee down at the Bijou. There in the cool, popcorn-scented darkness of our rural West Texas theater, we could escape for a few hours from the voice of clinging little sisters and bullying big brothers and joyfully ride alongside Roy Rogers as he went about his weekly business of stomping the living what-for out of evil, righting wrongs, and singing his way into the heart of his ladyfriend Dale Evans who, for a girl, wasn't too bad inasmuch as she seemed to think as highly of Roy as we did. Indeed, if my childhood ever acquainted me with a true-life Ward of Heaven, Roy Rogers, King of the Cowboys, was that person. Needless to say, I was hardly alone in my unabashed hero worship. In the years between 1943 and 1954 Roy Rogers was annually voted Hollywood's number one money-making Western star. Over four hundred merchandising products bearing his endorsement filled the pages of Mother's Sears and Roebuck catalog (hats, chaps, boots, toy six-guns, thirty-two different designs of belt buckles and the first of the children's school lunch boxes). His fan mail, ofttimes addressed simply to "Roy Rogers, King of the Cowboys," found its way to Republic Studios without the slightest delay. We Buckaroos, as he was fond of calling us, joined Roy Rogers Fan Clubs, bought twenty-eight million Roy Rogers comic books a year, and prompted publishers to produce no fewer than nineteen hardback books based on his fictional heroics. We listened to him sing and yodel on old RCA Victor 78s and devotedly read a syndicated newspaper comic strip which reached sixty-three million readers weekly. His weekly statement for his radio sponsor, "I was raised on Quaker Oats," made us want to eat Quaker Oats ourselves. And we stood ever ready to argue with the greatest conviction that our hero could ride, shoot, fight, and sing better than all the other box office cowboys you could crowd onto a movie screen.

Roy Rogers was a beloved movie star.
During his career he made 87 musical Westerns. He and wife, Dale Evans, are favorite among Western fans.
Here's a souvenir record album from the 1950s. Inside it has photos from Rogers' various movies. The original record is still in good condition. That sets the price at $95. This flashlight from the 1950s is in near-perfect condition. Because the flashlight still has its original box, it sells for $350. These watches, also from the 1950s, run $250 apiece. Books are also valuable ... ... especially those with original dust covers. This one is priced at $30. This figurine of Bullet, his dog, is rare and sells for $75. This original yo-yo was made in the 1940s and sells for $40. An original lunchbox from the 1950s is priced at $350.

Roy Rogers
Roy Rogers' title of "King of the Cowboys" was a hard fought one. Rogers began his life in Ohio as Leonard Slye and sang and traveled with the music group Sons of the Pioneers until his movie break in 1938 in "Under Western Stars". Gene Autry was scheduled to star in that film but dropped after contact disputes. It was Roy's big break. Roy Rogers' movies differed slightly than those of Gene Autry. Roy's movies were usually set in the 19th century while Gene incorporated automobiles and telephones and other 20th century props. But both actors used singing and music as an important part of the movie plot. Roy's horse, Trigger and dog Bullet were just as famous as the actor himself! In 1947, after the death of his first wife, Roy married Dale Evans and the two teamed up to create very successful careers in movies and television. At the time of Roy's death in 1998, the couple had been married 51 years.

Hat
. Roy Rogers wrote this about his hats: "The way I like it, my hat is peaked high in the front and slopes easy down toward the back. I guess a hatmaker could do it, but I like to take my own hat into the shower, get it good and steamy and shape it myself." This hat is a rare Roy Rogers hat because it is gray. It was made for his TV show "The Roy Rogers Show." On black and white TV, the hat would appear white.

Both include the names of their sidekicks and leading ladies. (The filmography on William Boyd and the Hopalong Cassidy films is in the Boyd/Hoppy section of the Old Corral.) G enerally regarded as the most popular of the B western movie cowboys are Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and William 'Hopalong Cassidy' Boyd - two singin' cowboys and a mature 'man of the west' who wore black (but in reality, it was dark blue). These three are the cinema cowboys of legend. They rode the silver screen over a half century ago ... and decades from now, our grandkids and great grandkids may be talking about them when discussing the history of film, radio and TV. While there is a section on the Old Corral devoted to William Boyd and the Hopalong Cassidy films and character, I've purposely stayed away from webpages on Autry and Rogers for one simple reason - there are tons of videotapes, books, articles and websites devoted to them. My concentration will continue to be on those cowboys who have received little or no coverage on the Internet and deserve some mention and praise (such as Johnny Mack Brown, Fred Scott, Eddie Dean, Sunset Carson and many others who rode the dusty cinema trails).

When I heard of his death it felt like the loss of someone I should have known, perhaps it was guilt in not knowing he was actually alive. He appeared in over 80 westerns (88 I believe). He was first and foremost (and last) a cowboy. He knew the boundaries of his art describing it as 'a little song, a little riding, a little shooting and a girl to be saved from hazard.' Roy Rogers was born, Leonard Franklin Slye on November 5, 1911; Cincinnati, Ohio. His father worked in a shoe factory. Leonards early years were dominated by general poverty. He only managed two years formal education which meant he had little chance of becoming a dentist, the profession he had wished to enter. Instead he worked on farms and this is where he learnt the essential skills which would serve him well later. Slye went to California where he formed an unsuccessful band. However he was to form a band called, Sons of The Pioneers (he was called Dick Weston at this stage) which he played in until 1948. The band member had several film credits including The Legend of Lobo (1962) a disney film about a wolf cub. In 1942, they did a film called, Sons of the Pioneers.

Happy Trails: The Life of Roy Rogers
Roy Rogers was everyone's image of what a cowboy should be, from his white Stetson with its silver hat band to his hand-tooled boots. His face was strong and handsome with eyes that squinted yet still showed a twinkle. His smile was warm and reassuring. Whether he was wearing fringed Westernwear or a checkered cowboy shirt, he was the epitome of what a cowboy should be. He was the picture of honesty and integrity. And was there ever a more exciting sight than watching Roy and Trigger riding majestically across the television screen or a rodeo arena? No wonder three generations of kids (and adults) wanted to be like Roy Rogers. We wanted to look like Roy, dress like Roy, and be as honest and forthright as Roy. He gave us standards to live by that helped teach us the difference between right and wrong. His willingness to stand up for the things he believed in inspired us. And his religious faith and his concern for the less fortunate helped mold our character. Roy lived his life off camera with the same decency and humility that he projected on television and on the silver screen. He was the hero who never let us down. Despite all the success that came to him, Roy never seemed to lose his way. And he never forgot that his fans were the ones who made it possible for a poor boy from Ohio to attain a level of success greater than anything he could ever have imagined. His decency and strength of character come from a simpler time in America. Yet it was anything but an easy time.

HAPPY TRAILS
July 6, 1998
The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer Transcript A hero to many young baby boomers, singing cowboy Roy Rogers died at the age of 86. Elizabeth Farnsworth leads a discussion on his life and impact on America's youth. ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: Roy Rogers, who died today at age 86, was the number one western star at the box office between 1943 and '54, according to a magazine poll of theater operators at the time. Rogers was also a television star. His Roy Rogers show ran for 100 episodes in the 1950's. And he helped found Sons of the Pioneers, whose recording songs like "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and "Cool Water" remain country western favorites. Here he is with his wife, Dale Evans in the 1950 movie "Trigger Junior." ROY ROGERS AND DALE EVANS: (singing) May the Good Lord take a likin' to you- ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: For more we're joined by Michael Stern, who helped Roy Rogers and Dale Evans write their autobiography "Happy Trails, Our Life Together," and by Bill Malone, a retired Professor of History at Tulane University and author of "Singing Cowboys and Musical Mountaineers." Michael Stern, how did Roy Rogers become such a big star? MICHAEL STERN, Biographer: It wasn't by design. As a young child, growing up in extreme poverty, in Duck Run, Ohio. Roy's dream, his fondest wish as a boy was to become a dentist. That didn't happen, but he went West, as so many people did during the Great Depression. He picked fruit. He started singing with the Sons of the Pioneers. Movies went to sound, and suddenly they realized that westerns, which were all action and very little talk, if you added music to them, were a whole new wonderful genre, and Roy was perfectly suited for this new genre, and that's how he got into the movies in the first place.

In 1990, the Novato-based acoustic guitaristwho was largely responsible for ushering John Lee Hooker's Grammy-winning comebackjoined Hooker, jazz trumpet great Miles Davis, Taj Mahal and others on the Delta-driven film score to The Hot Spot Hooker and Davis simmered above Rogers' red-hot slide guitar licks in a winning combination that drew critical raves. Now Rogers is teaming up with bassist and vocalist Jason Newsted of Metallica and drummer and percussionist Carl Coletti of neo-flamenco star Ottmar Liebert's band in the fledgling trio Heard of EleMEnts. Newsted, who lives in Walnut Creek, joined Metallica in 1986 after the death of bassist Cliff Burton. He left that band in 2001 citing "the physical damage I've done to myself playing the music I love." In last year's revealing documentary Some Kind of Monster (in which Metallica hires a therapist to guide them through the control issues that were ripping the band apart), Newsted claims that he left because guitarist James Hetfield refused to allow his bandmates to participate in side projects. In 2004, Metallica selected Ozzy Osbourne bassist Robert Trujillo to replace Newsted; Ozzy then tapped Newsted to join him that year for the Ozzfest tour.
