In Memory 1911-1998
Roy Rogers and me June 1995
at his museum in Victorville, CA Thanks to all who have left a message in my guest book. It's good to know that a lot of people feel the same way about Roy that I do. During one of my visits to the museum I was fortunate to meet Roy and talk to him a few minutes. His honesty and warmth flowed out to all who were there. This was in 1995 and Roy was not moving too well, really he shuffled along as opposed to walking, but he insisted on wearing his full cowboy outfit, including his boots, because "that is the way people expect to see Ole Roy." During this visit I had the picture shown above taken with Roy. When I asked if I could have my picture taken with him he said "sure, who is taking the picture?" I indicated where my wife was with the camera. Roy got a mischievous look in his eyes and said "Now what do I do, I'm new to this sort of thing." BUT, the memory I have of this visit that will always be with me is when an elderly lady pushing her blind husband in a wheel chair quietly told her husband that Roy was there. Her husband excitedly asked in a very loud voice, "where is he, where is Mr. Rogers?" Roy immediately went over, took the man's hand in his, and said "I'm right here my friend and I have plenty of time to talk with you." And he did just that. At that time, Roy's star shone for me even brighter than it had before.

American Legend Roy Rogers is one of the best known and most beloved names in the rich heritage of Western entertainment and culture. His enormous popularity transcends all forms of entertainment, from live performances to movies, records, radio and television. Around the world, he is as well known as Coca-Cola, IBM or Walt Disney. After over 65 years in the public eye, his name personifies the values, tradition and unique spirit that are at the heart of the American experience.

http://www.who2.com/royrogers.html
ROY ROGERS Actor Country Singer Name at birth: Leonard Slye Rogers was called the "King of the Cowboys" during his long career as a folksy singing hero of movies and TV. He was an original member of the cowboy singing group The Sons of the Pioneers, and in 1937 he signed on with Republic Pictures, replacing their departing star Gene Autry. He starred in more than 80 westerns with titles like The Arizona Kid (1939) and In Old Cheyenne (1941). He often co-starred with cowgirl Dale Evans , whom he married in 1947. Rogers's famous horse was Trigger , a Palomino stallion with flowing white mane who became a favorite with Rogers's fans. In the 1950s Rogers moved into TV with the The Roy Rogers Show . His theme song with Dale Evans was the gentle and cheery "Happy Trails to You."
Extra credit : Rogers was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame twice, as an individual in 1988 and with the Sons of the Pioneers in 1980... His is no relation to the blues guitarist Roy Rogers... It's true: after Trigger's death, the horse was mounted and put on display at the Roy Rogers Museum in Victorville, California. The museum (and Trigger) moved to Branson, Missouri in 2003... Rogers lent his name to the Marriott Corporation for the successful Roy Rogers chain of fast food restaurants; the first outlet opened in 1968.
Rogers and Trigger appear with Alexander the Great and Bucephalus in our loop Seven Horses of Highly Effective People

Hypertour visit
to the Roy Rogers Museum!
Trigger, Roy Rogers' Horse
Died 1965 - Victorville, California The Roy Rogers/Dale Evans Museum gets 200,000 visitors a year. Most come to see Trigger, Roy's dead horse. Roy Rogers, Jr., who manages the museum, says "We close at five and stop selling tickets at 4:30. But people come after that and beg to get in for a few minutes. They drove 3,000 miles just to see Trigger. We let them in and they go away, happy. While Roy Rogers, Sr. won't be coming by in his golf cart to pose in the lobby any more (he died in 1998), Trigger still has star power. Outside, a 24-foot-tall fiberglass Trigger, reared on his hind legs, lets visitors know that they have arrived. Trigger was ridden by Rogers in every one of his motion pictures, finding his own fame in the process. After Trigger died at age 33, his hide was stretched over a plaster likeness and put on display, also reared on two legs, inside the museum. He is mounted, then, not stuffed. Remember this when you speak to museum personnel, who will loudly correct you if you get it wrong.

http://obits.com/rogersroy.html
Roy Rogers, 1911-1998 Hollywood's perennial "King of the Cowboys", Roy Rogers made more than 100 feature films, hosted wildly popular television shows and worked to instill old fashioned values in his legions of young fans. Credited with more than 400 recordings and twice inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, America's best loved singing cowboy died on August 6th, 1998 at the age of 86. Roy Rogers's popularity as a film star may have lay in the authenticity of his image: Rogers was, apart from a name changed for esthetic reasons, a real singing cowboy with a wry sense of humor, courtly manners and old fashioned ethics. Born Leonard Franklin Slye on November 5th, 1911, the actor was first the son of Ohio farmers with no small percentage of Native American blood. As a youth, he worked the family farm and ranch, learned to play the guitar and was instilled with an inflexible morals code that he maintained later in life. When the Depression hit, 18-year-old Leonard Slye left home to try and make a living, joining a steady caravan of Dust Bowl migrants and failed Midwestern farmers moving toward California, hoping to find work. With little more than his clothes and his prized guitar, the future "King of the Cowboys" arrived in Los Angeles around 1930. With his focus on survival, not film work, he took a job as a truck driver, labored in the San Fernando Valley orchards as a fruit picker, and played music wherever and whenever he could. He worked with such groups as The Hollywood Hillbillies, Texas Outlaws and the Rocky Mountaineers, ultimately forming The Sons of the Pioneers with Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer. Known for such celebrated cowboy classics as "Cool Water" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" the trio became regulars on country western radio shows. While their leader, Leonard Slye occasionally took a bit part in film westerns (under his own name and as Dick Weston) the trio's big break came in 1936 when they appeared in the

Their Dynasty was built on fine films, great music, and family values, and the reign brought joy to millions of fans.
Roy and Dale shared with us not only their entertaining adventures in the fictional West, but real-life inspirational messages that came straight from the heart
On the right side of the frame, Dale is shown on her famous buckskin quarterhorse, Buttermilk. To her right, a length of braided rope frames the legend, "Dale Evans, Queen of the West." Trigger gets his own portrait on the backstrap, where a braided rope encircles the legend, "Happy Trails," Roy and Dale's signature phrase.
The cylinder is also embellished with six designs, one for each chamber of the gun. A musical note symbolizes Roy & Dale's music, and Buttermilk and Bullet the Wonder Dog get a portrait each. One chamber shows Roy's holster, complete with a Colt .45, another shows a pair of Roy's fanciest boots. The final chamber shows Trigger's saddle, complete with Double R Bar stirrups as designed by "the Michelangelo of saddlecraft," Ed Bohlin. A lariat encircles the entire cylinder.
