Dale died on February 8, 2001, at age 88; Roy went in 1998. Dale has joined Roy in the family plot in a Victorville cemetery. With the departure of the "Queen of the Cowgirls," we wonder about the future of their fabulous self-celebrating museum. The Roy Rogers Museum is a large monument to Roy and his wife. The outside is shaped like an old cavalry fort, with a- 24-foot statue of Trigger on his hind legs guarding the entrance. In the lobby, a carved wooden sign reads "This is our life - Roy and Dale." And what a life! Dale married Roy in 1947, after the death of his first wife. He proposed to her on horseback. They rode their equally famous horses, Trigger and Buttermilk, in 27 films.

The western movie star of the '30s-40s, Gene Autry's only rival as the Saturday matinee cowboy idol, was billed as 'King of the Cowboys', and was a hit on TV in the '50s. His father made mandolins and guitars; he grew up on a farm, worked in a shoe factory, performed locally in the '20s; to California '31, worked as a truck driver, then picking peaches. He sang in various groups; then as Dick Weston led the Pioneer Trio, which appeared in Autry's Western sci-fi serial The Phantom Empire '34, then a radio announcer changed the name to the Sons of the Pioneers ( see their entry). He had bit parts in Columbia westerns, signed with Republic as Roy Rogers (and had to leave the Pioneers as they signed with Columbia). He had his first starring role in Under Western Skies '38, which may have been the one which was a fairly realistic portrait of the Pony Express postal service. LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) The Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum in Victorville, California, will be closing its doors, partly because of a dwindling numbers of visitors, but the collection will stay intact and move to a new location in Branson, Missouri. The museum was founded by movie and TV star Roy Rogers, known as "King of the Cowboys." He died in 1998, and his wife and frequent co-star Dale Evans died last year. Their son, Roy "Dusty" Rogers, Jr., who runs the museum, had been considering shutting the doors of the fort-like building along Interstate 5 for the past year as fewer aging fans came to visit. The collection has little that might appeal to non-fans it includes hundreds of personal family photos, and such things as old bowling trophies won by Rogers.
