Meet Cathy Diebold
by Denis Wright May 23, 2004 Georgia's Secretary of State, Cathy Cox, could easily be considered the official Poster Girl for Diebold Election Systems, Inc. Her photo appears on their website alongside a glowing quotation praising them to the skies. She also loaned them the Georgia State Seal, for that "official" look. And she is defending the implementation of Direct Record Electronic (DRE) voting machines, more commonly known as touch screen voting, in the face of overwhelming evidence of security flaws and unreliable performance. There have now been at least five major studies regarding problems with DRE devices, all of them are severely critical of Diebold. Maryland even hired an independent group to investigate; they hacked into the system and were changing votes within ten minutes. Thousands of computer experts have signed a petition, sponsored by Dr. David Dill of Stanford University, demanding a voter verified paper ballot. There is currently legislation winding its way through Capitol Hill that will mandate back-up paper ballots on every DRE machine. And California's Secretary of State recently decertified Diebold's DRE machines in that state, noting that the company was "banned, decertified, fraudulent, despicable, and deceitful" in their dealings with the state. What has been the response from Cathy Cox?

From tires to travel to finance Loyola student teams are in the national spotlight
by Caitlin Rull, A'03, Intern, Offices of Public Affairs and Publications The student marketing team rolled into a first-place finish at the American Marketing Association (AMA) International Collegiate Case competition. The team finished ahead of the seven other university teams from across the country to walk away with the national championship, the second for the marketing team and the College of Business Administration. The AMA asked all of its collegiate chapters to develop a marketing program for Sullivan Tires that took into consideration the changing face of the American consumer: more minorities with greater ethnic diversity, and more females who are heads of households and make decisions about tire purchases and auto service. Goodyear and Sullivan Tires and Auto Service sponsored the competition. On the strength of its 25-page marketing report, the team was selected to go to the finals. The team worked on the campaign since November, meeting for long hours of brainstorming and research development. As part of its data analysis, members handed out 650 questionnaires at tire stores around the city to determine buyers' priorities and expectations. The data helped the team to establish promotional objectives. The key to their campaign was a strong focus on building customer relationships. And they executed it right down to the smallest details, including when and how to advertise; how to strengthen the company's existing relationships; and how to attract more customers, especially females and minorities.

SCRAPHEAP CHALLENGE TV GAME SHOW HOME SITE INDEX CATAMARAN HULL SOLAR PANELS ... SPONSORS This is one of Orions favourite game shows, hosted by Robert Llewelyn and Lisa Rodgers. It is very inspirational and embodies a lot of the principles underlying Orion Robots. Scrapheap Challenge is known as Junkyard Wars in the United States . It is a game show broadcast on British Channel 4 and The Learning Channel . The show features contestants using materials (often old vehicles) available in a junkyard to build working machines that can do a specific task. At the end of each episode, the machines are pitted against each other in a contest to determine the winner. Episodes generally consist of two four-person teams in competition, plus one or two hosts who usually consult with an "expert" judge who knows something about non- junk versions of the machines being constructed. Each team consists of three regular members, plus a fourth expert who usually has a better understanding of the class of machine being constructed for that episode.

(1.9 Mb PDF Document, requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or newer to view) 1999-2002 Count Results In 2003, HWI conducted or co-sponsored 14 long-term standardized migration counts in 10 states and Vercruz, Mexico. The primary objective of these efforts is to track long-term population trends of diurnal raptors throughout primarily western North America. Raptors feed atop food pyramids, inhabit most ecosystems, occupy large home ranges, and are sensitive to environmental contamination and other human disturbances. Therefore, they serve as important biological indicators of ecosystem health. Moreover, due to the remoteness and widespread distribution of most raptor populations, migration counts likely represent the most cost-effective and efficient method for monitoring the regional status and trends of multiple raptor species The interface of the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains represents an obvious migratory corridor for raptors, especially Golden Eagles. Prevailing westerly winds along the Rocky Mountain foothills create reliable updrafts for migrating raptors in a nearly continuous line extending from north-central Mexico through New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and western Canada. The attractiveness of this route for spring, northbound migrants (especially eagles) is enhanced by the abundance of Columbian ground squirrels and black-tailed prairie dogs newly emerged from winter burrows, carrion from spring calving, and migrating waterfowl. All are available on the plains in close proximity to the Rocky Mountain foothills.

1. Overview of meetings and comments:
A draft synthesis of the public comments from the scoping phase was distributed. Reed Bohne asked SAC members to give their impressions of the meetings and the scoping process. A summary of member comments follows:
Bing Phillips: There were many complaints by attendees about the lack of information on the health of the reef. The general consensus from user groups was, "don't close the reef". Prohibiting anchoring could help the reef. We should carefully evaluate how changes in management might effect the economy and benefit the reef and recreation.
