This is Hapa . He’s a male Border Collie mix currently living on the Big Island. Hapa is neutered, weighs about 65 lbs and is only 18 months old. His family describes him as a very friendly family dog who gets along great with kids. If you would like more info on Hapa please call Jenny at (808) 967-7204.
Mark, Charmaine and family flew to the Big Island and flew back with Hapa! She is transitioning to Oahu's pace and is LOVING it! Kona has made remarkable progress with his training. We're still working on his dog socialization skills but he's an absolute sweetheart around people. He's house trained and very eager to please. His foster mom says she's never seen a dog that could play fetch as well as Kona! Kona would love to live with a very active family. He's great with children and loves any kind of attention. Our resident Trainer Dave has done such a GREAT job with Kona that the two just can't part with each other! It's been a rough ride for Kona but it looks like he's finally found the perfect home! Kuuipo is a young (1-2 years old) BEAUTIFUL poi dog. She is heartworm positive and will be starting her treatment soon. She weighs about 40+ lbs. but should be about 10 pounds more. She is mellow and loves just laying around the house! She does enjoy going on walks as long as they aren't too long. Her foster mom, Chelsea, is nurturing her back to health and is shown here giving a cooling bath.

I'm not sure how to summarize this three hour marathon. How can I effectively communicate this surreal experience to people who were not there? Let's just throw out this little tidbit. I think it helps set the tone. Rochell Moore has done and said some very strange things over the last few months. For example, at Monday's board meeting, she lashed out at fellow board member Amy Hilgemann. When she was ruled out of order, she grabbed microphones from two other board members and continued to speak. Yesterday, she put a curse on the Mayor (see above.) Reasonable people can disagree about the Board's decisions to hire an outside management team, close 16 schools, and lay off 1,400 employees by outsourcing certain functions. But I think it would be difficult for anyone to look at Rochelle's actions and see a well-balanced and reasonable advocate for the children in the St. Louis Public Schools. When Rochell Moore walked on to the stage this evening, 300 people gave her a standing ovation. That's when I knew it would not be a dull evening.

Mum's Rescue Story ~ Dee Dee, November 2000 Dee Dee ~A Beautiful Story
What Rescue Is All About
By Cindy G. Mercer
For those of you that I have worked with, know that I don't usually post about all the dogs I rescue and place, but this one is very special. DeeDee was with another rescue group in foster care for 1-1/2 years, adopted once and returned. I basically rescue Pomeranians and toy breed dogs. I had been trying to help place some of the older "long time foster dogs" for other rescues. Dee Dee was a large Pom, that some though wasn't even a purebred. I found this wonderful family that had contacted so many different organizations, of which half did not even responded to them. I had this beautiful 2-1/2 year old 5-1/2 LB Chocolate Male Pomeranian, which I offered to them for adoption and the lady asked me if I would have trouble placing him~ of course NOT he is young beautiful, etc., and that they wanted to really help a rescue dog. Thank you for reading Dee Dee's story.

http://www.northeaststate.edu/nssa/MooreAwards.html
The L. Rochelle Galloway Moore Awards for Distinguished Alumni Service
The L. Rochelle Galloway Moore Awards for Distinguished Alumni Service are dedicated to L. Rochelle Galloway Moore in memory of her service as a Student Ambassador. Rochelle '97 served as an active Ambassador during 1996-97 and earned an associate degree in office systems technology. Rochelle, a Kingsport, Tennessee, native, passed away at the age of 27 on July 30, 1999, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She faced this battle with the same strength, grace, and humor with which she served Northeast State as a Student Ambassador. Rochelle was a beautiful soul inside and out, and she is missed greatly as an Ambassador, as an advocate, and as a friend to Northeast State. She is missed more, though, as a bright reminder of the goodness that exists in the world. For those lucky enough to have known Rochelle and to have worked with her, Rochelle's memory will remain as a guide. The L. Rochelle Galloway Moore Awards were dedicated on June 9, 2001, during the Student Ambassadors' 10-Year Anniversary Celebration and Reunion. The Galloway family was present to accept a plaque honoring Rochelle and commemorating the award dedication. Award recipients for the years 2000 and 2001 were recognized. These awards honor Rochelle's legacy of service to Northeast State and recognize those Alumni Ambassadors who continue to support and advance the mission of the organization, who continue to demonstrate loyalty to the College, or who continue to enhance the quality of life within their communities. The recipients are selected by the president and advisors of the Student Ambassadors each year.

I t became clear midway through the season, as two Rockland records came down in one incredible weekend on local track's grandest stage, the Loucks Games. On the first night at Loucks, McKenna became the first Rockland girl to break 11 minutes in the 3,200 when the sophomore crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, 51.62 seconds. The next afternoon, McKenna flew past a quality field in the 2,000 steeplechase, winning the event in 6:54.36, at that point the fastest time in the nation and less than a second off the state record. "When you're coming off a real hot two-mile like that your legs should be flat the next morning," Suffern coach Jeff Dempsey said. "To come out and put a steeple together like that, which is the toughest race to do, especially with flat legs, you knew how strong she was."

From one end of Westchester County to the other, Tall Tree programs are flourishing. At the two Tall Tree sites of New Rochelle and Peekskill, and at the 18 communities that received Mini-grants and the 8 that received Collaboration Grants, an impressive array of accomplishments proved that school and library collaboration can effect educational achievement and tackle today's most pressing challenges. When schools and libraries share resources, talent and energy, a whole new level of educational opportunities and services takes shape. In this issue of the Tall Tree News we're giving a bird's eye view of Tall Tree's work this past year. We've outlined some of the issue-based patterns that have emerged in many of Westchester's schools and libraries as a result of their efforts to reach a common goal - improving the lives of children. A sampling describes a few of the wonderful school/ library programs that have helped children throughout the area. Additional ideas and information are provided in our recap of the Tall Tree workshops and seminars in the "County Connection" section. And, be sure to see our regular "Check It Out!" column. This issue highlights web sites and bright new books on artists and musicians - perfect fare for kids to savor over the summer.
