Cumberland River (Wild River)
The Cumberland River catchment (approximately 3,750 ha) is the last truly wild river in the Otways and Western Victoria. It is a fully forested catchment that has no agricultural or urban development, with the exception of the Cumberland River Camping Ground on the Great Ocean Road. The river has a series of waterfalls that are still isolated. The biological diversity in the catchment is excellent. The catchment has 90 metre high mountain ash trees and the most eastward stands of Cool Temperate Rainforest in the Otways. The area is recognised as a refuge for the endangered spot tailed quoll with a significant proportion of the headwaters of the catchment zoned as a SMZ. There are no dams on the river that has an average flow rate of about 20,000 mega litres per annum. The water from the Cumberland is pure to drink as it runs under the Great Ocean Road and enters the sea.

Meryl Streep
Whips Up The River Wild
By James Greenberg
Photos by Kurt Markus There's something wrong with this picture: Meryl Streep is navigating a raft through Montana's seething Kootenai River, the spray drenching her gray sweatshirt, the 16-foot vessel lurching as she digs her oars in with a concentration that's no act. The noble cheekbones, the imperial nose, the translucent skin, it's all there. But her hands are callused and bloody, her hair stringy and sun-bleached, and strangest of all, as she careens through the rapids, this most aristocratic of actresses seems to be having the time of her life. ''Rafting is a fluid art,'' Streep says, intending no pun. ''You don't know what's going to happen. You can't fight it, you have to stay cool. It was thrilling to come out. . . intact.'' Intact qualifies as a joyous word because her role as former whitewater guide Gail in The River Wild had Streep in command of a rubber raft for most of the 15-week shoot, taking on Class V rapids (Class VI are considered unnavigable), dangling her craft at the edge of a waterfall, flying almost blind when the camera obscured her view, and performing some stunts up to 12 times to be sure director Curtis Hanson (The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) got the goods.

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~amcolan/Curtis/curtis.html
Deodatus Curtis of Braintree, Rhode Island
The power of a storm determined the fate of Deodatus Curtis and his descendents. Had it been stronger than it actually was, the ship on which he traveled would have probably gone to the bottom and the line would have ended there. A weaker one would have not carried away three of the ships masts and prevented it from reaching its intended destination of Barbados where some other line of descendents would have come about. As it was, the ship was forced to Martha's Vineyard, Deodatus purchased land in Braintree, Connecticut, married, and had two children. So began the Deodatus Curtis line in America. This is how this Curtis came to be in America according to family tradition . There are other theories on just where Deodatus was going, but it is certain that he purchased land in Braintree in 1640. The particular line of the family documented here lived primarily in Ohio from 1791 onwards. Eleazer Curtis, his family, and his brother made the trip from Warren, Connecticut as was described by Walter Curtis I am indebted to a book written by Laura Guthrie (Curtis) Preston for the information for generations one through seven. I have a lot more information on the Descendant's of Deodatus Curtis than is presented here. If you think you are related to Deodatus Curtis drop me a line.

Shortly after arriving at language school in Costa Rica, Rachel and I were introduced to a new missionary. Her name was Mery. She was originally from Colombia, had lived in the U.S. for the past twenty years, and now was living in Costa Rica. She spoke perfect English, and of course perfect Spanish as well. After telling her that we were there to study Spanish, she immediately invited us to her home to practice. She asked us if we would be willing to come each week for supper and she would help us to practice our Spanish. We were thrilled and agreed to the appointment. When the night of our first appointment arrived, we went to Mery's house for dinner. During the meal, Mery talked away in Spanish and we listened and tried our best to answer her questions, in Spanish of course. I had not said much during the meal , but decided to try out a new Spanish phrase that I had learned earlier in the day. I wanted to complement her cooking, so I turned to Mery and said in Spanish

Notes: Bioaerosol measurements were made in 45 Quad Cities, Illinois houses following the 1993 floods of the Mississippi and Rock Rivers. Least squares log transformed means for fungal concentrations (in cfu m(-3)) were 1,449 in basements, 1,174 in living rooms, 1,234 in kitchens, 1,464 in first floor bedrooms, 1,197 in second floor bedrooms, and 2,590 outside. Mean least squares log transformed bacterial concentrations were 887 cfu m(-3) in basements, 878 cfu m(-3) in living rooms and 697 cfu m(-3) outdoors. Levels of fungi and bacteria were not notably elevated in the basements or other rooms of the formerly flooded houses. Levels of fungi and bacteria indoors were significantly less in houses with dehumidifiers and in homes with natural gas odors. Air-conditioning during warm periods significantly reduced airborne concentrations of fungi.

He was a Private in the Gonzales Ranging Company of Mounted Volunteers. According to land records, he arrived single in the DeWitt Colony 13 Aug 1830 and received title to a quarter sitio of land on the Guadalupe River in northwest Guadalupe County . He also owned 4 lots in the west outer town Gonzales between the Guadalupe and San Marcos Rivers in the outer Gonzales town tract near those owned by his father Moses Baker and brother John Baker . On the Gonzales County Tax rolls of 1839 J.D. Clements (husband of Rachel Baker), brother-in-law and son-in-law, respectively, of Isaac Baker and Moses Baker is listed as administrator of their estates. Various historical entries vary in respect to the age of Isaac Baker. The entry in his brother John Baker's journal giving Isaac Baker's birthdate as 15 Sep 1814 notes that he fell in the Alamo fighting in the cause of Texas 6 Mar 1836 at "age 20 years, 6 months and seven days." If the birthdate is correct, the calculation should have been "21 years, 6 months, 22 days." If birthdates and land records concerning Isaac Baker's arrival are correct, he would have been under 16 years old at the time of his arrival prior to that of his parents. This date would place him at age 17 when he received title to his land grant in 1832. Heirs of Isaac Baker received bounty warrant 4038 for 1920 acres in DeWittCo for service 24 Feb to his death on 6 Mar 1836 and donation certificate 451 for 640 acres in GonzalesCo for having fallen in the Alamo.

IP immediately became the largest paper company in the world, and the Hudson River Mill its largest and most productive plant. Photographs and other graphic documents show that in just twenty-nine years the Hudson River Pulp and Paper Company dramatically expanded pulp and paper production facilities at Palmer Falls, from two small, wood-frame structures into a sprawling complex of red brick buildings. International Paper had essentially acquired a "turn-key" pulp and paper mill. In the early decades of the 20th century International Paper continued to utilize the most modern and efficient technologies for the production of wood pulp and newsprint at the Hudson River Mill. In 1902 a major remodeling of the groundwood mill was begun with the installation of the first of several 1000-watt General Electric generators that would be powered by Palmer Falls to drive pulpwood grinders and to supply electricity throughout the Mill.

ABSTRACT Critical decision making on a whitewater trip goes beyond simply having knowledge of safety practices. Rather, prudent decisions are arrived at through a complex interplay of a diverse variety of factors. The question is: how can we as outdoor educators prepare ourselves and our staff to make the "right" decision when faced with a potentially dangerous situation? Experience is always the best teacher, but short of being involved or being on-hand during actual river accidents, the next best way of preparing ourselves is through the study of river accidents. This paper looks at the sources of information on whitewater accident case studies and how accident information can be used as a teaching tool. Additionally, the 1995 whitewater season is reviewed and one case study is examined in detail.
BASIS OF SAFE TRIPS
Over the past few years, there has been a movement in the field of outdoor education to develop lists of commonly accepted outdoor activity safety practices. The Association of Experiential Education has been in the forefront of this effort, publishing a volume of common practices in different outdoor activity areas, including river running. If you are in charge of a river trip program, such material can serve as a good starting point from which to develop a safe water-based program, but it should only be a one part of your overall safety strategy.

He's been a guide on the Bow River for the past 28 years, supported Trout Unlimited since it's inception in Calgary, and continues to be an avid fly tyer. Garth works full-time in the Oil and Gas industry and shares his home with his wife of 28 years and two sons. Secretary - Craig Robillard Craig grew up fishing for the three P's - perch, pickerel, and pike - in Manitoba. After completing his Bachelor of Science in computer science at the University of Manitoba, Craig moved to Calgary and picked up his first fly rod. He learned to fly fish for trout in downtown Calgary and soon became interested in conservation and Trout Unlimited. He's been a TUC-BRC board member for the past eight years, coordinated the chapter's tackle swap for the past 10 years, and is an active member of the Fall Splash dinner committee. "Most people in Calgary don't realize how special and precious the Bow River is" says Craig. "Calgary is unique in North America having such a quality trout fishery downstream of a city approaching a population of one million. Maintaining the quality of the Bow in the face of ongoing development is a challenge and responsibility for those who love it and it's trout fishery." Treasurer - David Shaw David Grew up canoeing and fishing the lakes and rivers of Northern Saskatchewan and became "addicted" to water at an early age. Shrinking glaciers spell trouble for Skagit River

Lower Curtis Glacier hangs over a lip of rock on the side of Mount Shuksan, a sheet of ice spilling out of a bowl a few hundred yards wide. At the bottom of the glacier, cracks have divided the ice into impressive blue and white towers.
Water - 10 million gallons a day during August - streams out from under the ice, heading down the side of the mountain into a summertime creek that eventually settles into Baker Lake below.
Just a few years ago, those rocks were covered by glacial ice. But, like most others in the Cascade Range, the Lower Curtis Glacier is shrinking.
Mauri Pelto is director of the North Cascades Glacier Climate Project. He said if Lower Curtis continues shrinking at its current pace, eventually it will be replaced with a shallow lake. "It's already in negative mass balance now, and there's still two months of summer left." said Tom Hammond, one of the researchers who accompanied Pelto in August.

Although the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers traces its roots to the American Revolutionary War, the presence of Army Engineer activity in the Baltimore area really started around 1800, just before Congress authorized the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers. In 1830, the Baltimore Harbor was surveyed and it was determined that the controlling depth was 17 ft from the Chesapeake Bay to Fort McHenry. By 1836, Congress appropriated funds to dredge the entrance channels, although no channel dimensions were specified in the law. Dredging was completed in 1838. On November 10, 1865, Maj. William P. Craighill became the Baltimore District Engineer. Maj. Craighill had more influence than any other person in shaping the city's harbor. He was the District Engineer for 30 years before becoming a brigadier general and the Army's Chief of Engineers in 1895. Craighill's first order of business was to survey the Brewerton Channel to determine the presence of any shoaling. He was alarmed to find that the lower portion of the channel had become very shallow due to the conflicting currents from the Susquehanna and Patapsco Rivers. To prevent this from happening in the future, Craighill proposed a new cut that would alter the existing channel. The new channel would no longer go straight out into the Bay but would run due south for 3 miles and then turn to the southeast. The plan was approved and the new 200-ft-wide by 22-ft-deep channel was dredged and ready for navigation by late 1869.
