Peoples of the Western Lands continues in the Campbell Galleries of the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art through Nov. 14, 1999. George Catlin (1796 - 1872) Catlin was the first artist to travel into the American west to make a comprehensive record of Native American culture. After witnessing a delegation of Native Americans passing through Philadelphia on their way to Washington D.C., Catlin traveled with William Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame) through the upper Missouri River Valley. The customs, manners and appearances of the tribes Catlin met, lived with and painted during his journey form the basis of the North American Indian Portfolio which he published in London in 1842.

Home Upcoming Events Annual Report Get Involved ... About Us
Since 1953, the MSA and its members have directed their capabilities and their funds to the protection of the entire Miramichi River system. For 50 years, the MSA has watched over the Miramichi as a champion of conservation on behalf of anglers, outfitters, guides and all others with economic, environmental and recreational interests in the river.
Managed by volunteers from both Canada and the USA, as officers and
directors, the MSA remains cooperative with, but independent of, government or special interests influence. It responds in the end only to its growing conservation membership.
The net result is a well-managed river system that today, thanks in part to the MSA's championing of its cause, has more miles of salmon angling water and holds larger and healthier populations of Atlantic salmon than any other river in North America. Mission Statement
Management actions to optimize the populations of juvenile salmon stocks in the Miramichi River.

3. Quality Assurance and Quality Control
Quality assurance/quality control procedures are designed to establish an acceptable taxonomic standard of macroinvertebrate sorting and identification. The quality control component is to determine the variation in the level of identifications, and quality assurance provides potential users with the assurance that the accuracy of results is within controlled and acceptable limits. Both external and internal QA/QC programs were run concurrently from the start of the MRHI program through to the end. However the independent external QA/QC audited only a small percentage of the samples collected and did not monitor the progress of individual agency workers. The main aim of the internal QA/QC program was therefore to assess individual performance, detect problems at an early stage and thereby allow intervention and training to proceed before the quality of data gathered in the program was seriously compromised.

    Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC)
Two agencies - EPA and AWT (formerly Water Ecoscience) - were involved in all four rounds of the MRHI, while the three years of FNARH monitoring were undertaken solely be EPA. To assess the quality of data and the adequacy of field and laboratory procedures, three QA/QC programs were implemented:
  • Comparisons between Victorian agencies External assessment of live-sorting efficiency Internal and external checks of laboratory identifications
  • Comparison of Victorian Agencies - Field Collection and Laboratory Identifications
Twice each year of the MRHI, EPA and AWT staff met at one of the scheduled sites and a member from each organisation took both a kick and a sweep sample. All four samples were then identified by two staff members of each organisation, except for the last sample round when only one EPA staff member identified the samples. From the total of 60 sample identifications, only 7 mistakes were made at the family level. This was less than 1% of all identifications and well within our target of less than 1% error rate at family level.

USE OF GIS TO CHARACTERIZE LARGE RIVER BENTHIC HABITAT
Kimberly A. Bjorgo , Michael P. Strager, and Kyle J. Hartman ABSTRACT
Large rivers worldwide have been dramatically impacted by human activity. Most fisheries research in large rivers has focused on water quality as an indicator of ecosystem health. Research on how benthic characteristics of large rivers affect fish distributions is lacking. This paper focuses on the use of ArcView and its extensions to characterize benthic habitat in an industrialized river in West Virginia. The visualization capabilities of ArcView are used to show interrelationships of various habitat characteristics. The ability to provide 3-D imagery will be a valuable tool for management and utilization of benthic habitat.
INTRODUCTION Large rivers worldwide have been dramatically altered to serve the needs of mankind (Petts 1984). In their normal condition, rivers exist as a longitudinal gradient of nutrients and community structure as well as sediment classification (Vannote et al. 1980). The addition of lock and dam structures to most rivers has resulted in dramatic changes in river morphology and flow rates (Nielsen et al. 1986), forming a series of impoundments ranging from lotic to lentic conditions typical of many large rivers (Ward and Stanford 1983). Hydrosedimentary characteristics have also been impacted as a result of flood and navigational controls (Nicolas and Pont 1997). Many species of fish are not tolerant of reduction or redirection of flow related to human alteration of large rivers (Curtis et al. 1997; Modde and Irving 1998).

The balloon set off from Puerto Llano
A professional stuntman has broken the world record for bungee jumping from a hot-air balloon. Curtis Rivers, 32, lept from a balloon 49,869 feet (15,200 metres) above Andalucia, Spain, while attached to an elastic rope. After bouncing several times he cut himself free and parachuted back to earth. Mr Rivers, from Guisborough, Teesside, is awaiting official verification of the feat which was performed and recorded on Sunday. Mr Rivers is no stranger to risks
He performed the feat while preparing for a world-record parachute jump. His operations manager Jim Crosbie, 41, said: "It was fantastic... he is fine. "We were doing some high altitude testing of the equipment, and while we were there we decided to do the bungee jump as well as test the cameras and oxygen. "That height was the lower limit of where you can jump without oxygen.

Greetings, everyone - Thanks for all the messages. Like "5," I too am having fun with this, but I'm a bit pressed for time, so I'm sorry I'm not responding to each of you individually or in full. Dear 5: Thank you for your comments. "Get out the liniment" - great line! I also like your quote: "First there is a teacher, then there is no teacher. First there is a system, then there is no system." I think the original Buddhist saying was, "Before I studied the Way, mountains were mountains, and rivers were rivers. After I'd practiced the Way for a few years, suddenly mountains were no longer mountains, and rivers no longer rivers. But now that I've practiced the Way for many, many years, mountains are again mountains, and rivers are rivers." So I guess we eventually will return someday to "there is a teacher, there is a system." Dear Charles: I understand you were cutting to the chase, no harm done. I didn't think I was trying to be indirect before ;) Excellent way to describe the controlled conditions: "necessary but not sufficient." My bio wasn't meant to impress, just to show that I have some background.

    58. Statement Of H. Curtis Spalding, Estuary Restoration Legislation, July 9, 1998
TESTIMONY OF H. curtis SPALDING, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF SAVE THE BAY, INC. Narragansett Bay is not just a place where the fresh water of the rivers meets

    TESTIMONY OF H. CURTIS SPALDING,
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF SAVE THE BAY, INC. OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND
TO THE SENATE COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT AND PUBLIC WORKS
    WASHINGTON, D.C. JULY 9, 1998
On behalf of Save The Bay's 20,000 members, I would like to thank Senator Chafee and the Committee for this opportunity to present testimony in support of S. 1222, the Estuary Habitat Restoration Partnership Act. Save The Bay is a member-supported nonprofit organization. Our mission is to restore and protect Narragansett Bay and its watershed. Five years ago, over 20 nonprofit organizations met to discuss the future challenges for our nation's estuaries and to set a course of action to meet those challenges. Many of our coastal areas were beginning to reap the benefits of the Clean Water Act. In Narragansett Bay, harbor seals and oysters were starting to return after decades of absence due to polluted water. Despite similar limited recoveries in many of our nation's estuaries, we shared a deep concern that many species of fish, birds and other animals were not recovering as we had expected. Also troubling, some coastal areas not previously affected by water pollution were now in serious decline. After months of inquiry and discussion, we saw that the problem with the health of our estuaries was no longer grossly polluted water, but the ongoing loss of habitat for fish, birds, shellfish and plants along our shorelines and in our watersheds. Thus in late 1994, Restore America's Estuaries was formed. It is a current partnership of 11 nonprofit organizations from Seattle to Galveston to the Gulf of Maine. Over the past four years, each organization has identified and targeted the habitat resources in its own estuary and coastal environment that are threatened and in need of restoration. Restore America's Estuaries has pledged collectively to restore one million acres of habitat to our nation's estuaries by the year 2010.

    Freaky Friday (PG)
    Directed by Mark S. Waters
Freaky Friday culminates in a scene at the House of Blues that features both Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis, left) and daughter Anna (Lindsay Lohan, right) jamming on guitar. She may have had a body to die for but time and gravity affect us all (worse luck) and Jamie Lee Curtis is no exception, (and good for her declaring she plans to age disgracefully!) Okay, she may not be as 'perky' as she once was but at least we can now concentrate on her other assets, like her knock out acting ability and great comedic timing. Want proof? Check her out in this latest hilarious film adaption of Mary Rodgers' book Freaky Friday. It's a great concept. A mother and teenage daughter constantly at odds with each other, (and who hasn't been there!) magically switch bodies and after a lot of laughs and near disasters finally discover a newfound understanding and respect for each other. She wants to audition with her garage band but her mum wants her to attend the wedding rehearsal dinner... and Anna doesn't even like Ryan. What's a girl to do? Fight back, that's what!
