This section of Silver Creek contains the best whitewater and most play spots. For it's first 2 miles, from the putin on theTaylor Fork tributary to its intersection with KY 876, Silver Creek is class I-II at all flow levels. The best whitewater fun of this reach however doesn't really begin until it's last mile where Silver Creek runs parallel and can be seen from KY 876 - the "Park N' Surf" section. Park N Surf putin rapid (6" flow level) At normal flows of 0" to 2 feet there are several outstanding, easily run class II(III) rapids within the Park N Surf stretch which offer the play oriented paddler hours of fun. At higher flows above 2 feet Silver Creek along Park N Surf approaches solid class IV range with at least one hydraulic, (third rapid downstream of the Park N' Surf putin), a riverwide, very sticky hole that must be punched slightly left of center to avoid a thumping. Silver Creek Falls, a 4 foot creek wide ledge which can bee seen from the KY 876 bridge can be run pretty much anywhere with a sneak tongue forming far left at flows above 2 feet. The Park N Surf section has about 9 rapids / play waves along its mile length to just below the KY 876 bridge and can be run in 15 minutes or several hours depending upon the individual paddler's outlook on play boating and whitewater skool of thought.

SOG Local Event - Rivers Wood, Balcombe
Filed under: Orienteering There was not too far for me to travel to the SO local event at Rivers Wood, between Balcombe and Haywards Heath in the High Weald, so I arrived early and had time to warm up and prepare mentally. I had decided to concentrate on navigation - wanting to be sure I was understanding the map and executing well by not rushing, even if this meant slowing down a little. I ran green and liked the course. There were good route choices to make on a few legs and some interesting terrain. These woods seemed to make sense to me. I did feel in control and knowing where I was. Despite this I made two mistakes, though not as costly as they usually are for me. I made a parallel error on the way to five, then had the frustration of knowing exactly where the control was, even seeing it at one point about 150 metres away across a field, but being the wrong side of a well-constructed barbed wire fence. Had it been dry I would have climbed over, but I had a mental picture of slipping in the terrible wet and ripping my leg open, so I went round to the gate. The second error was parallel too - I went off down a well-defined track but one to the West of the one I wanted. This took me beyond the ride I was looking for, and to the valley bottom. I was able to relocate once there and climb back up. I even pulled some time back.

Environment
Curtis Creek is a second order stream located in western St. Joseph County. This top-quality designated trout stream flows south to Mill Creek, which feeds the St. Joseph River watershed of Lake Michigan. The town of Three Rivers is located about 4 miles to the southwest of Curtis Creek.
Most of Curtis Creek flows through nearly level to gently rolling, well-drained, loamy and sandy soils on outwash plains and moraines (Oshtemo-Spinks Association). The area surrounding the stream is primarily wooded, wetland, or abandoned farm field.
Estimated to be 3.3 miles long, Curtis Creek's west branch starts in low wetland areas dominated by springs. The east branch is an old designated drain (Profile Lake Drain) in the upper portion near M-60, but has hardly any water flowing through it. Curtis Creek falls about 50 feet from its headwater spring area to the confluence with Mill Creek. Stream gradient is about 15.2 feet per mile. It averages 14.5 feet in width, with an average depth of 1 foot. Stream discharge has never been measured, but is estimated at 10-15 cubic feet per second.

35. Mike Curtis Studio Of Bronze Wildlife Sculpture
Mike curtis creates wildlife sculptures with an emphasis on the bald eagle. and drawing their catches from the waters of the lakes and rivers.
http://www.mikecurtis.com/curtis.htm
Mike Curtis Mike Curtis is well known for creating beautiful and inspiring wildlife sculptures in bronze. He has been sculpting the bald eagle since 1971 and is considered the foremost sculptor of this magnificent creature. His artistic and accurate renditions of the bald eagle are widely recognized as those best capturing the beauty and freedom of our nation's proud symbol. Throughout the year, Bald Eagles dive in the lake after fish and perch in the trees near his studio. Studying eagles in the wild, Curtis observes their courtship rituals, nesting habits, and drawing their catches from the waters of the lakes and rivers. His commanding portrayals of the powerful and symbolic eagle remain unequaled.
Exhibitions of Curtis sculptures include the Audubon Art Exhibition in Alaska and The National Sculpture Society in New York. His sculptures have also been exhibited in museums across the country, most notably: the Alaska Museums Tour organized by the Gulf Oil Corporation; the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum; and the Museum of the Rockies.
Mike Curtis sculptures have been presented both to and by United States Presidents. He was the artist chosen by the White House to prepare a work of art, presented by President George Bush, which would symbolize the proud heritage of the United States. A Curtis sculpture was also presented to President Gerald Ford upon his retirement.

Dave Brown
Dave developed his first passion - fishing - while pursuing steelhead and trout in the tributaries of Lake Ontario and on the rivers and lakes of New England and Quebec. His discovery in 1991 that the fishing in Whistler was second to none led him to make Whistler his permanent home. When not guiding on the water (during the winter months) Dave can be found teaching private ski lessons - his second passion for the past 15 years.
Murray Field
Raised on Vancouver Island, Murray has been fly-fishing for the past sixteen years. He has fished all over British Colombia for Salmon, Trout and Steelhead. He is a superb fly fisherman and a very guest service oriented guide.
