Release: April 9, 1999 Broadway musical star Alice Ripley discusses musical theater April 19 at UI IOWA CITY, Iowa Broadway musical star Alice Ripley, who is currently singing the role of Fantine in the New York production of "Les Miserables," will present an informal discussion of musical theater at 8 p.m. Monday, April 19 in Theatre B of the University of Iowa Theatre Building. Ripley, who worked with UI theater arts faculty member John Cameron when they were both students at Kent State University, will meet with UI theater students earlier in the day. Ripley made her Broadway debut in 1993 in "The Who's Tommy" before touring the country in "Les Miz." She became a hot ticket when she co-starred with Glenn Close in the original Broadway cast of Andrew Lloyd-Webber's "Sunset Boulevard." In 1997 she worked with Alan Menken and Tim Rice to create the role of Bathsheba in "King David," the inaugural production for Disney's refurbished New Amsterdam Theatre. She received Tony Award and Drama Desk "best actress" nominations for her work in "Side Show," inspired by the true story of the Hilton sisters, "Siamese" twins who were vaudeville performers of the 1930s. With co-star and co-nominee Emily Skinner she released the top-selling CD "Duets" on Varese Sarabande.

LINKS MISCELANEOUS Free Updates Masthead Writing for CurtainUp A CurtainUp Review The Baker's Wife By Simon Saltzman What Does He Think I Am? What Sort Of A Weak-willed Sentimental Sheep Does He Think I Am? Well, I Won't Even Think About Him, I'll Just Go To Sleep - from the song "Meadowlark" sung by The Baker’s Wife Alice Ripley There will be those patrons at the Paper Mill Playhouse who will say, " The Baker’s Wife must be a new musical. I’ve never heard of it. . . but what a delight it is." There will be others who will say, "I’ve been waiting 29 years to see this musical. It is better than I could have ever imagined." Certainly set designer Anna Louizos’ imaginative and lovely unit setting of a rural French village square that revolves to also reveal the interior of the bakery and the church is a knockout. During the day, the café and store fronts are as often as not bathed in a golden hue by lighting designer Jeff Croiter. At night, the lights from the surrounding town can be seen to widen and embrace the perspective. As this is a typical French village during the mid 1930s, the citizenry are occupied with getting their morning croissants, continuing old grudges, gossiping and gathering around the café. It is here that Denise (Gay Marshall), the proprietor’s wife steps forward to set the stage and establish the mood that "nothing is really different" with the lilting "Chanson." The priest (Jamie La Verdiere) is having his daily argument with the school teacher (Mitchell Greenberg) and one neighbor continues his harassment of another neighbor regarding a tree that is shading his spinach patch. Soon everyone is expressing what it is that irritates them the most ("If It Wasn’t For You") they haven’t had fresh bread since the baker died a few weeks ago. All get something new to talk about when the new baker arrives with his lovely and much younger wife, whom they mistakenly assume is his daughter.

The booklet contains texts from each of the two performers and the reason why such a recording was made.
This is a superb recording. Emily and Alice both have pretty nice voices, and the songs selections is really good. On the other hand, some of the songs scores were altered and are more "pop"-like (for example In His Eyes
which I played first when I got the CD has some unnecessary drums that make it sound like a simple slow. In fact, even if their voices are very nice, maybe there's not the required feeling in the way they sing some songs, maybe because they're not acting there, but just singing. It's globally a very nice recording though. Musical Numbers Little Me

Elaine's Broadway debut! Elaine's first time playing Norma was in London for a six week run when Betty Buckley had to be hospitalized for appendicitis. Joe Gillis was played by John Barrowman, Betty Schaefer by Anita Louise Combe, and Max von Mayerling by Michael Bauer. When Elaine returned to the cast in May 1995 after Betty Buckley's run had ended in April, Betty Schaefer was being played by Catherine Porter; Joe Gillis was later played by Alexander Hanson. For Broadway, Joe Gillis was played by Alan Campbell, Betty Schaefer by Alice Ripley, and Max von Mayerling by George Hearn. Elaine's run in the Broadway Sunset , and the show itself, concluded on 22 March 1997. (Kristen Behrendt played Betty the final night since Alice Ripley was at a wedding.) Elaine gave a short closing speech to an audience which had been enthusiastically applauding both the stars and the show the entire evening. Broadway Review (September 1996) Review by Jennifer J.
