Diana Rigg in Other Roles
With all the ballyhoo about her role as Emma Peel, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that Diana Rigg trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and was an accomplished Shakespearean actress before she took on The Avengers . The oversight is made easier because Rigg's most important and acclaimed roles have been on the stage. So, to emphasize that Dame Di has done something else besides appear as the karate-chopping Emma Peel, I've collected a small bunch of photos of her in other roles. Click on the thumbnails for full-sized shots. (Many thanks to Kim Metzger for providing this magazine photo of Diana Rigg.)

RIGG, DIANA British Actor After shooting her first twelve episodes in the role of Mrs. Emma Peel in The Avengers , Diana Rigg made one of those discoveries most likely to madden newly-minted stars: her weekly salary as the female lead in an already highly successful series was £30 less than what The Avengers' lowly cameraman earned. Rigg had not even been the first choice to replace the popular Honor Blackman as Steed's accomplice; the first actress cast had been sacked after two weeks. The role then fell to Rigg, whose television resume at the time consisted only of a guest appearance on The Sentimental Agent and a performance of Donald Churchill's The Hothouse. Rigg's stage experience, however, was already solid. After joining the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1959, the same year as Vanessa Redgrave, Rigg had steadily amassed a strong string of credits, including playing Cordelia to Paul Schofield's Lear. Years later Rigg described the rational for her turn to television: "The trouble with staying with a classical company is that you get known as a 'lady actress.' No one ever thinks of you except for parts in long skirts and blank verse." Rigg's salary complaints were quickly satisfied, and American audiences, who had never been exposed to Blackman's

@import url(../../../css/bfi_global.css); Rigg, Diana (1938-) Actor A sophisticated dark-haired beauty of the '60s, a classically trained actress who after RADA and repertory, signed with the RSC in 1959, but found international fame as Emma Peel in second series of The Avengers (ITV, 1965-67). The series was a tongue-in-cheek, stylish update of the William Powell Myrna Loy movies, in which she engaged in witty repartee with Patrick Macnee , whilst defeating a range of colourful villains. She made her film debut in 1968, repeating her stage role of Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream (d. Peter Hall, 1968). Too smart to fit comfortably into the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service (d. Peter Hunt, 1969), she was better served by In This House of Brede (US, d. George Schaefer, 1975), and The Hospital (US, d. Arthur Hiller, 1971). In more recent TV films, she excels as older women, mean and obsessive as in Mother Love (BBC, 1989, a best actress BAFTA), and has triumphed on the London and NY stage in roles as varied as the musical Follies and as Medea , but her British cinema career is lamentably brief.

THE AVENGERS The Avengers is a show about a man in a bowler hat and a woman who throws men over her shoulders (Patrick Macnee). The Avengers began in 1960 when an almost vagabond, and then semi-employed, actor named Patrick Macnee was approached to take the role of John Steed, a mysterious figure who would be a secondary lead to the character of Dr. David Keel, played by Ian Hendry, on a new television adventure/thriller called "The Avengers". One year and 26 episodes later, Ian Hendry left the show to pursue other opportunities in television and movies. The ruffian character of Steed had, by that time, become more popular than that of the doctor, and Macnee was retained as the lead. A hunt began for a replacement partner, Honor Blackman was hired as Cathy Gale (from 1962 to 1964) but the most famous partner was Diana Rigg as Emma Peel (from 1965 to 1967). The last period of the series the partner of Patrick Macnee was Linda Thorson as Tara King (from 1967 to 1969). Finally, after 161 50 minutes episodes, the show took off. There are still some secrets left. The public was never told for whom Steed works and who cuts John Steed's pay check. The other one is whether or not there is a romantic relationship between John Steed and his beautiful partners.

Regular Cast Biography
Page 9 of 13 Diana Rigg Emma Peel by David K. Smith Born 20 July 1938 in Doncaster, England, Diana Rigg was transplanted to India at the age of two months when her father, a railroad construction engineer, moved the family there for seven years (where she learned to speak Hindi). Returning to Yorkshire, she graduated from Fulneck Girls School in Pudsey and was promptly accepted by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, although she frequently butted heads with the faculty and was nearly kicked out. While highly successful at the Royal Shakespeare Company, she was starving on the meager pay, and started moonlighting on television shows. An appearance on Armchair Theatre ("The Hothouse") indirectly led to her world-famous role as Mrs. Emma Peel. Voted #1 in TV Guide 's "Top Ten Hottest Stars of All Time" (7 August 1999), Ms. Rigg started her acting career early, appearing in a school play of "Goldilocks" at the age of thirteen, and thereafter expressed a preference for the stage. By the time she was 22 she had been a clerk, a telephonist, and a fashion model. Named Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1987 and made a Dame in 1994, she has received honorary doctorates from Stirling University and from the University of Leeds. Diana's father was Louis Rigg, her mother Beryl Helliwell. She has a brother, Hugh, an officer in the RAF, four years her elder. She married Menachem Gueffen, an artist, on 6 July 1973 in London, and divorced on 3 September 1976. Her daughter Rachael Atlanta Stirling was born 30 May 1977. She then married Archibald Hugh Stirling, a theatrical producer and Scottish laird (full title: Archibald Stirling of Keir) on 25 March 1982 in New York, and divorced in 1990.
