Black List Casino of the Day Casino of the Month Consumer Advice ... What's Cool Merchant Of Venom Don Rickles Is Almost A Pussycat "I'm not going up to Canada for laughs, you can bet on that." Ka-zing! That's classic Don Rickles for you. The average comedian might gush about how achingly WON-derful it is to be visiting you people up there in, um, Edmonton, is it? Do you folks have electricity? Do I need a parka? Not Rickles. The man's a pro. He goes where the job takes him, even if he's not sure exactly where north of the 49th it is, and he lets you know that right off the top. The funny thing is, Rickles really is coming up to Canada for laughs. The guy who's done more for the words "hockey puck" than that Wayne Gretzky fella, Rickles is the star of A Night of Laughs 4, tonight's gala benefit for the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation. It may be a little bewildering to see a Vegas headliner of Rickles' stature getting down with the home-town crowd at the acoustic hellishness that is the AgriCom, but we're not about to look a gift horse in the mouth. Especially not a thoroughbred like this one. Rickles used to run with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Bob Hope. He's been packing them in since the '50s, when the then-unknown comic - according to popular and oft-repeated legend - told audience member Sinatra, "Make yourself at home, Frank. Hit somebody."

C.P.O. Sharkey First Show Last Show Genre Comedy Network NBC Slot Day Wednesday Slot Time 9 pm Jumped The Shark when... Votes Never Jumped Johnny Carson invaded Sharkey gets a new boss Day One Other Thoughts:
  • While Johnny Carson was on vacation, Don Rickles was on the Tonight Show. He managed to damage Carson's precious pencil holder. (You know how Carson was always twiddling a pencil.) When Johnny returned and found out what Rickles had done, he literally storms next door to the set of CPO Sharkey and gives Don a ration of shit. Rickles responds with a barrage of insults only to be turned back by Johnny's own wit - essentially causing a stand-off. I just wish I could remember what they said exactly. (I know! I'll look it up on a Rickles fan site!) If I find anything I'll post it here. Now, don't anybody go telling me that this was all staged. I'll never believe it. Even if it was staged, it was funnier than anything written for the show. Carson was pissed (or pretended to be) and heard that Rickles was next door taping CPO Sharkey. He was told were taping and he couldn't go in and Carson said calmly "I don't give a damn." They then cut to the CPO Sharkey set (of course we don't see if it's really next door) and you had three minutes of (apparently) improv insult comedy by two very funny men. Carson had the funniest line. Carson stopped and turned to Peter Isacksen who had been sitting there laughing the whole time. "Hey I know you.... you're... you're...the black guy!" Isacksen almost fell over when shaking Carson's hand. "Yes, I'm the black guy!" A classic moment in 70's TV. Too bad CPO Sharkey never had any of these.

Dean: Many Republicans don't make honest living
June 3, 2005 BY CHUCK RAASCH

WASHINGTON Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean further burnished his shoot-from-the-lip reputation Thursday, saying ''a lot of Republicans'' don't make an ''honest living'' and the GOP has a ''dark, difficult and dishonest'' vision for America. Speaking to a conference of liberals, Dean also offered tacit criticism of the way his party ran the 2004 campaign for the White House. He said Democrats under his tenure were instituting ''significant changes'' in strategy for coming elections and that it would not cede any ground to the Republicans, including GOP bastions such as ''Kansas, western Nebraska and Mississippi.'' ''You have seen the last 18-state campaign for the presidency,'' Dean said, an allusion to the focus on a handful of ''swing states'' in the 2004 presidential elections. Dean's 25-minute speech to the Campaign for America's Future annual gathering was interrupted frequently by applause, but his line about Republican work habits also produced an undertow of ''oohs'' and ''aahs.''
