Beauty and the Beast Music: Alan Menken Book: Linda Wolverton Beauty and the Beast is the story of a prince who is magically transformed into a hideous beast by an old witch. In order to break the spell, he must learn to love and be loved. Based on the classic film, this stage version of Walt Disney's Beauty and the Beast includes several new songs by Alan Menken and Time Rice including "No Matter What", "Me", "Home", "How Long Must This Go On?", "If I Can't Love Her", "Maison des Loon", and "Transformation". The score also includes "Human Again," a song originally written by Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman for the film version of Beauty and the Beast , but never used. When Disney CEO Michael Eisner saw Paige O'Hara (Belle) and Jerry Orbach (Lumiere) perform musical highlights from Beauty and the Beast as part of an awards presentation in New York City, he knew that audiences would embrace a live stage version of the film. He turned to producer W. McTyre, director Robert Roth and scenic designer Stan Meyer who immediately set out to find a way to translate Beauty and the Beast Beauty and the Beast opened at the Palace Theatre on April 18, 1994. It featured all of the characters from the film including Belle, Maurice, Gaston, Lumiere, and Mrs. Potts. Hould-Ward was awarded a 1994 Tony Award for "Best Costume Design" for her work on the musical.

50. Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - A Musical By Andrew Lloyd Webber
Brief history and synopsis of the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and tim rice, plus links to cast albums, sheet music, and videos.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm71.html
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber Lyrics: Tim Rice Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat , the first collaboration between Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, tells the story of a young man named Joseph living in the land of Canaan. His father's favorite son, Joseph is perhaps a little spoiled. While the rest of his brothers are forced to wear sheepskin, he struts around in a fabulous rainbow-colored coat, a gift from his adoring father. The rest of Joseph's brothers aren't too pleased with the situation, and when Joseph goes so far as to tell them of a dream he has had in which their stacks of wheat bow down to his stack of wheat, they decide they have finally had enough. Joseph's brothers abduct him, destroy his cherished coat, and toss him into a pit to perish. But when a group of Ishmaelites come trotting by on their donkeys at the last minute, the brothers have a change of heart and decide not to murder Joseph, but rather to sell him into slavery. Either way, he's out of their hair, and this way, they make a little extra cash. So they slaughter a goat, bloody up Joseph's coat of many colors, and return to their father, feigning great sorrow at the unfortunate death of their poor brother Joseph. Joseph, however, will not be put down so easily. After being sold to an Egyptian property owner and serving a brief stint in prison, he uses his dream-reading abilities to secure an interview with the Pharoah who is so impressed with the young man that he immediately appoints him Minister of Agriculture. Years later, when a severe famine hits the land, Joseph's brothers come begging for employment. Realizing that they don't recognize him, Joseph decides to stage a little surprise for his would-be murderers before he allows everyone to live happily ever after.

52. The Lion King - A Musical By Elton John, Tim Rice, Roger Allers And Irene Mecchi
Brief history of the musical by Elton John, tim rice, Roger Allers, Irene Mecchi and Julie Taymor, plus links to cast albums, sheet music, and tickets.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm50.html
The Lion King Based on Disney's most successful animated feature to date, The Lion King tells the story of Simba, a lion cub whose quest to take his rightful place as king of the beasts takes him on a journey of self discovery and redemption. The mastermind behind the Broadway production was Julie Taymor, a director known primarily for her work in the avant-garde theatre. She not only directed the show, but also designed the costumes, collaborated with with Michael Curry on the design of the masks and puppets, and contributed additional music and lyrics to the original score by Elton John and Tim Rice. Taymor's first challenge was to determine how she should approach a story that is all about animals, but is in essence a human story. She eventually decided to accentuate this duality between the human and the animal by combining masks and puppetry with live actors. She created giant masks that would represent characters such as Scar and Mufasa, but left the human face revealed below the mask so that the actors' facial expressions would not be lost. Taymor's next hurdle was finding a way to convey the atmosphere of The Lion King in a live theatre. Determined not to tone down the scale of the film, she wanted to bring to the stage such vast and sweeping elements as the rolling African Savannah and the famous wildebeest stampede in which Mufasa is killed by his brother Scar. She succeeded in reproducing these grand effects through the use of ingenious impressionistic staging techniques. For the wildebeest scene, she created a false perspective of great distance by placing five earth-colored portals one behind the other. She then used a canvas scroll and a series of large rollers to create the illusion of thousands of racing animals. The effect in the theatre is electrifying as thousands of wildebeests seem to be rushing straight at Simbaand at the audience!

From Broadway to Hollywood, Tim Rice is back in tune
Tim Rice From Correspondent Cynthia Tornquist April 4, 2000 Web posted at: 5:55 p.m. EST (2155 GMT) (CNN) Tim Rice needed something to revive his song-writing career. Along came a genie, followed by a lion. In the late 1980s, Rice was disenchanted with New York's theater scene and his own work as a lyricist for musicals. Though he had enjoyed prosperous years on Broadway, including a partnership with theater legend Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rice was going through a career dry spell. He considered quitting altogether.

56. Evita - A Musical By Andrew Lloyd Webber And Tim Rice
Brief history of the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and tim rice, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm17.htm
Evita Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber Lyrics: Tim Rice Although originally conceived as a record project, Evita was destined from the beginning for the stage. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice provide a rich score which includes the internationally acclaimed hit "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" and lends itself to the highly theatrical stylings of director Harold Prince. Because of the huge success it had enjoyed in London (2,900 performances in its initial run), the Broadway production of Evita was nearly sold out before it even began. The story of Evita, told entirely through song and dance, follows the life of Argentina's infamous Eva Peron. It begins in 1934 and follows the young girl from her small hometown to Buenos Aires where she uses her feminine powers to climb the ladder of success, first as a model, then an actress, and finally as the wife of General Juan Peron. When Peron is elected president, Eva becomes the most powerful woman in South America. Evita opened its New York run at the Broadway Theatre on September 25, 1979 with Patti LuPone in the lead and Mandy Patinkin as the enigmatic Che Guevera. The production ran for 1,567 performances and spawned several touring companies. The 1996 screen version of

58. Chess - A Musical By Benny Anderson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Tim Rice And Richard Nelson
Brief history of the musical by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, tim rice and Richard Nelson, plus links to cast albums and sheet music.
http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/albm61.html
Chess Lyrics: Tim Rice Book: Richard Nelson Using as a metaphor the world of international chess, Tim Rice originally conceived to write a musical about how the Cold War affected the lives of all those it touched. The story revolves around the romantic triangle that develops when an American chess champion and his lover travel to Merano to defend his title against a Russian opponent who secretly plans to defect to the West. Rice originally approached Andrew Lloyd Webber to write the score, but his former partner was already committed to other projects. Then, in 1981, producer Richard Vos introduced Rice to Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, two members of ABBA who were looking to branch out into musical theatre. The team immediately set about creating a concept album. Two numbers from the album did well in the charts. "One Night in Bangkok" first appeared on the UK charts on November 10, 1984 and stayed there for 13 weeks, at one point reaching the #12 spot. In the US, it jumped to #9 in April of 1985 and topped the charts in France, Australia, Belgium, Austria, South Africa, Denmark, Israel, West Germany, Switzerland, Holland and Sweden as well. Another single, "I Know Him So Well," followed, eventually reaching #1 on the UK charts during its 16 week run. With Chess already a worldwide phenomenon before it had even opened, expectations were high. The London production opened in the West End on May 14, 1986 and ran for three years, but the high tech spectacle never managed to make back its initial investment
