A 68 overall. That's my rating in the new Madden. All I can say is, that's terrible. I'm going to be running around like a chicken with my head cut off with that 53 awareness rating they gave me. Oh my goodness. They always kill the rookies in the ratings. I think I'm a little bit better than a 68, but there's no justice for the rookies. All this does is inspire me to go out and play even harder. I'll deal with this rating for my first year, but after they watch a few games, they'll see. At least they gave me 87 speed. I can live with that.
I have a lot to live up this year, not only for the real Jets, but for all of those Jets fans playing Madden. Just put me back at strong safety and put me in position to make plays. Hopefully my speed in the game will make up for the fact that the rest of my stats in the game are sorry.

'The Weatherman': Raney, Rhodes forecast 3s FHSU juniors raining treys on opponents
By Nick Schwien
Hays Daily News
A "3's" advisory is in effect for the Denver area tonight. There's a 57 percent chance 3-pointers will fall like rain from "The Weathermen." Fort Hays State University junior guards Jim Rhodes and Jonathan Raney have been doing their best impersonations as weathermen this season. Whenever the Tigers have a game, the forecast will include raining 3-pointers. Rhodes and Raney have combined to sink 62-of-109 shots from beyond the arc this season entering tonight's 8 p.m. game at Metropolitan State College of Denver. After Tuesday night's game against University of Nebraska-Kearney, Rhodes was hitting 58.2 percent of his treys 32-for-55 and Raney was cashing in 55.6 percent of the time 30-for-54. "I'm not worried about percentages or anything like that," said Rhodes, who leads NCAA Division II in 3-point percentage. "All I'm worried about is finding a good shot. And if it's open, I'm going to hit it. I just try to make as many as I can. I don't worry about the percentages." Raney, who transferred to Fort Hays from Cowley County Community College after leading the Jayhawk Conference in 3-point percentage at 47 percent, said having another solid shooter from long range inspires him.

Private support helps Rhodes Scholars 1998 Carolina Rhodes Scholars Leslie C. Kendrick from East Point, Kentucky, and Jonathan Tepper from Madrid, Spain. In December, the University celebrated the selection of Carolina's 34th and 35th Rhodes Scholars. Jonathan Tepper from Madrid, Spain, and Leslie C. Kendrick from East Point, Kentucky, were among 32 students nationwide to receive the prestigious scholarships. Carolina was among just three schools to have two scholars; only Harvard University - with four - had more. Private support contributed to the academic success of these students. Tepper, a senior history and economics major, will return to England for a second time to study. Last summer, Tepper researched the daily workings of the British Parliament as a UNC-CH Class of 1938 Fellow. The fellowship, funded by an endowment created by the Class of 1938, allows students to study abroad in the summer. Tepper also is the recipient of the Fred W. Morrison Scholarship. The merit- and need-based award is funded by donations from the late Fred W. Morrison '13 and his wife, Emma. In 1996, the Lucius Burch III Fellowship was awarded to Tepper. The fellowship funded his independent research of Ladino, a language combining medieval Spanish and Hebrew, in New York City, Spain and Israel. Kendrick, a senior Latin and English major, is a recipient of the prestigious Morehead Scholarship funded by the Morehead Foundation. She won the Albert Suskin Prize in Latin in a contest involving three hours of written translation and an essay. The $250 prize was created by donations from friends of the Department of Classics in honor of a former professor.

HOME NEXT STORY "Tree, bug, flower, another bug..." When I think about some of the stuff I encountered on the Ghost section of the Wolf River, snakes, horseflies, deerflies, and lots and lots of mud, I find myself wondering why I consider that Sunday such an incredible experience. I wasn't very eager to leave the comfort of my warm bed early that morning, but at the same time I was looking forward to spending some time away from the rest of society. I had never been on a canoe trip like this, but I had been on a few hikes before and knew a little bit of the soothing quality nature can have on city folk who let it affect them. I was looking forward to "getting away," but I didn't think that meant driving in the same direction for what seemed like hours. In our case, it did. As we drove, the houses became fewer and fewer, and the forest denser and denser; I realized that what I was about to experience wouldn't be the "urbanized nature" of state parks that I was used to. The Wolf River turned out to be a very impressive display of "true" nature. Though not completely untouched by civilization, the river provided the opportunity to discover and explore a thriving yet delicate ecosystem. So many plants have been picked and trampled, and animals killed or captured in parks that we aren't given the chance to see how they live and survive together on their own; such was not the case on the Wolf.

Three Cornell students win Rhodes and Marshall scholarships
By Larry Bernard, Simeon Moss and Blaine P. Friedlander Jr. Three Cornell students, in different fields of study, are among a select few American recipients of the prestigious Rhodes and Marshall scholarships announced Dec. 8. Two of the students won both the Rhodes and the Marshall scholarships and, having a choice of only one, picked the Rhodes. They are: Jonathan Levine, majoring in physics, and Jessika Trancik, majoring in materials science and engineering. The third student, Rafael Cox, a College Scholar with an emphasis in history, won the Marshall Scholarship. They are all seniors. The three 1997 Marshall Scholarships for Cornell is the second highest number at a university in the United States this year. Only Harvard University, with seven, had more. And for the first time in Cornell's history, the university has more than one Rhodes Scholar in a year. Cornell, with two Rhodes Scholarships, had the third highest number, behind Harvard's five and Georgetown University's three. Yale University and the University of Notre Dame also had two each. There were 32 Rhodes Scholars selected in the United States this year out of 990 applicants from 323 colleges and universities, and between 30 and 40 Marshall Scholarships. "I congratulate Jessika, Jonathan and Rafael, who exemplify the quality of the student body at Cornell," President Hunter Rawlings said. "These awards are not only a confirmation of their academic excellence, but also are an outgrowth of this university's continued emphasis on undergraduate education and its integration with research. These honors, and the recent Nobel prize awarded to two Cornell professors and a former graduate student in physics, are a testament to the collaborative efforts of students and faculty at Cornell."

Jonathan Good, an Arts and Science graduate from The University of Auckland, is one of New Zealand’s three Rhodes Scholars for 2004. He was selected last night following a series of interviews involving 13 candidates at Government House in Wellington. Jonathan joins an illustrious list of successful New Zealanders who have won Rhodes Scholarships, widely regarded as the most prestigious award of its type in the country. The scholarships are tenable at Oxford University and 12 of the 30 awarded over the last ten years have been held by University of Auckland graduates. The other new Rhodes Scholars are University of Otago graduate Glenn Goldsmith and Willow Sainsbury, currently completing undergraduate studies at Princeton University in the United States. Jonathan plays club cricket and his other sporting interests have included soccer and more recently hockey. He has been actively involved in the Young Enterprise Scheme and his academic achievements include many scholarships and awards for physics and economics. He maintained an A+ record at The University of Auckland, gaining a conjoint BA (economics)/BSc (mathematics and physics) and a BA with First Class Honours in economics. Jonathan will undertake an MPhil in economics at Oxford and he says his over-arching goal is to become an economic/business leader in this country.

de Groot, Jerome. "Review of Neil Rhodes and Jonathan Sawday, eds., The Renaissance Computer ". Early Modern Literary Studies http://purl.oclc.org/emls/07-1/revrhod.htm
  • This is an interesting and invigorating book that analyses the impact and strategies of knowledge transfer systems during the early modern period. The essays address a wide range of subjects loosely based around the profound changes caused by print technology. The editors, Neil Rhodes and Jonathan Sawday, argue that the "situation facing publishers and readers in the first century of print [...] is in many ways analogous to that facing publishers and readers in our own period, the first century of computers" (1). The word "analogous" is the key here. Many of the essays in the volume are predicated upon analogy, parallel and anticipation. This leads to some interesting arguments, but it can also mean that the essays rest upon approximations, assumptions and ingenious arrangements.
The essays in this collection are stimulating and exciting. Andrew Hadfield deploys a number of postmodern and postcolonial theories to consider the impact that print had upon notions of national identity and definitions of nation. He discusses the way that new technologies transform "the range and possibilities of imagined communities" (116). Hadfield neatly interweaves discussion of a variety of texts that define 'Britishness' with an analysis of the state of modern theoretical approaches to nation and identity. Jonathan Sawday considers the origins of our language of technology and traces the concept of 'replicability' first defined in the early modern period:

Three Harvard students are looking forward to spending two years studying at Oxford University, thanks to the estate of British philanthropist and colonial administrator Cecil Rhodes. The Rhodes Scholarship winners are Jonathan Finer Akash Kapur '97, and Navin Narayan '99. The three are among 32 students this year to win the prestigious scholarship nationwide. Harvard, which has topped the nation in number of winners for six straight years, tied this year with the University of Chicago, also with three winners. The scholarship pays tuition and fees and provides a stipend of about $10,000 annually. It can be extended to a maximum of three years. The U.S. winners were selected from a pool of 909 applicants from 310 colleges and universities around the country. Established in 1904, the scholarship is open to students in 18 countries around the world and is intended to fulfill Rhodes' dream of promoting international understanding and peace. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, leadership, and involvement in extracurricular and athletic activities. Rhodes Scholars Jonathan Finer of Winthrop House said that hearing he'd won the scholarship was "overwhelmingly exciting." For him, studying at Oxford will be another in a series of steps that have introduced him to increasingly wider horizons.
