Christopher Reeve Christopher Reeve September 25 October 10 ) was an American actor director producer and writer renowned for his film portrayal of Superman/Clark Kent . Reeve was born in New York City to writer Franklin Reeve and journalist Barbara Johnson . He received a Bachelor of Arts degree at Cornell University in , after which he was selected to study at Juilliard School of Performing Arts under John Houseman . While at Juilliard, he became friends with a wildly improvisational classmate named Robin Williams . In Reeve was paralyzed in a riding accident and spent the rest of his life wheelchair-bound, becoming a spokesperson for the disabled and for stem cell research. Acting career Reeve's first big break as an actor came in when he was selected to co-star opposite Katharine Hepburn in the Broadway play A Matter Of Gravity . Reeve stayed with the play throughout its year long run and was given very favorable reviews. He and Hepburn became very close. Reeve credited the legendary actress with giving him many valuable lessons on acting. Hepburn in turn praised her young co-star. She predicted great things for him and joked that he would "support me in my old age". Reeve joked back "I don't think I'll live that long Miss Hepburn". Reeve continued to work on the stage, as well as on the soap opera Love of Life His first role in a Hollywood film was a small part as a submarine officer in the disaster movie Grey Lady Down in . Reeve will always be known for his role as movie hero Superman and the heroic way he dealt with his paralysis after a horse riding accident. The strapping six-foot-four New Yorker was unknown outside casting agents' offices before he became internationally famous for his role in the 1978 blockbuster, alongside Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman. The film and its three sequels made Reeve a global star and made $300m (£167m) at box offices. But Reeve's life was shattered in May 1995 when he was thrown from his horse during an equestrian competition in Culpeper, Virginia. Paralysis cure Reeve's injuries were so severe that he stopped breathing for three minutes - his head had to be reattached to his spinal column. The result was paralysis from the neck down.

From his first appearance at the Williamstown Theatre Festival at the age of 15, Reeve established a reputation as one of the country’s leading actors. However, ever since he was paralyzed in an equestrian competition in 1995, Reeve not only put a human face on spinal cord injury but he motivated neuroscientists around the world to conquer the most complex diseases of the brain and central nervous system. After graduating from Cornell University in 1974, Reeve pursued his dream of acting, studying at Juilliard under the legendary John Houseman. He made his Broadway debut opposite Katharine Hepburn in A Matter of Gravity in 1976 and then went on to distinguish himself in a variety of stage, screen and television roles with passion. Film credits include: “Superman” in 1978 and its subsequent sequels, “Deathtrap,” “Somewhere in Time,” “The Bostonians,” “Street Smart,” “Speechless,” “Noises Off,” “Above Suspicion” and the Oscar-nominated “The Remains of the Day.” Stage credits include: The Marriage of Figaro, Fifth of July, My Life, Summer and Smoke, Love Letters and The Aspern Papers. Reeve made his directorial debut with “In the Gloaming” on HBO in April 1997.
