Hands On: Create Insane Reason Grooves

If your music relies on strong beats, you probably discovered long ago that using prerecorded loops from professional sound developers is a great way to build a mix quickly. But what if you want to go further? Customizing your beats can take your music to a whole new level of imagination and impact. Plus, if you've mangled the beat just a little, you're guaranteed never to suffer the embarrassment of hearing the identical groove on someone else's CD. In this tutorial we'll explore the process of customizing beats in Propellerhead Reason, the popular software music studio. You can download a save-disabled demo from the Propellerhead site . We'll start with a REX file (see sidebar) straight out of Reason's Factory Soundbank, and we'll take it through a few twists and turns that only Reason power users know about. At each stage, you'll be able to download an MP3 file and hear what the process sounds like.
The Doctor Is In (Then Out)
Reason's Dr.REX module, which has been part of the program from the beginning, is designed to load and play beats in Propellerhead's REX file format. (Second-generation REX files have the .rx2 filename extension.) While Dr.REX offers a few widgets for customizing the beat, it's possible to go a lot further by loading the REX file into Reason's NN-XT sampler module. The NN-XT has multiple outputs, and also gives you a lot more parameters with which to control individual samples (drum hits) within the beat.

Just one reason to get this book
"Two Channels are Better than One"
by Kurt Kurasaki This article was adapted from my book, Power Tools for Reason 2.5 published by Backbeat Books. The example from the Chapter Four section on 'attenuation' discusses a particular cabling technique, useful for all Reason/Reason Adapted users. This example is only mentioned in passing, and in retrospect, i should have placed a little more emphasis on the topic. While the material is not intended for the Reason neophyte, anyone can learn from the examples by following the procedures, studying the wiring schematics. Dual Mono Mixer Connections
While researching the chapter on audio signal routing, I discovered that the pan control set at center seems to attenuate the signal. Actually, panning a signal towards the left increases the level on the left mix bushigher than when the signal is panned center. This shed some insight on the issues, and led to the following discovery. Stereo audio signal levels from Reason sound modules are louder when they are connected to two separate mixer channel inputs panned hard right and hard left. This dual mono cabling technique adds gain to the incoming stereo signal, and the increased dynamics can restore some fidelity that may get lost in a mix. Take a listen to the following example file that demonstrates the signficant loudness difference between a sampler connected to a stereo input as compared to the same sampler with dual mono connections:

Remix CD-Rom ... Contact Us Produce, Reuse, ReCycle By Dave Hill Jr. Mar 1, 2002 12:00 PM E-mail this article REPEAT THE BEAT To become a ReCycle expert, it helps to have a basic knowledge of sampling or sequencing. At its core, ReCycle is a sample-manipulation tool that can do much more than make quick and seamless loop points. SAMPLING TIPS Watch the volume! If your recording software has metering, use it. Try to record as close to 0.0 dB (or unity) as possible without going over. If you peak, chances are you will hear a nasty digital glitch. When sampling, try to record at levels between -6.0 and -0.5 dB. You can always normalize later, but don't forget that normalizing sound will also normalize any background noise. Normalizing is a technique that is often overused in the digital recording world. To normalize means to raise the volumes of everything contained within the sample to a given volume ceiling (chosen by you). The problem is that, by normalizing a bad sample, you will usually augment what is bad.

Remix CD-Rom ... Contact Us PROPELLERHEAD Reason 1.0 By Dave Hill Jr. Apr 1, 2001 12:00 PM E-mail this article A virtual rack of hardware that nearly does it all. During the Winter 2000 NAMM show, Propellerhead Software (creator of ReCycle and ReBirth) announced the imminent release of Reason, a powerful and revolutionary software package that offers an entire rack's worth of hardware in a virtual configuration. The unveiling spawned a healthy buzz among DJs, the techno crowd, soft-synth devotees, and the ReBirth faithful. Press releases with Reason's specs boasted that the software would provide all the power of several synthesizers, samplers, rhythm machines, effects processors, and sequencers in a single streamlined package. Like many other enthusiasts of the latest technology, I bookmarked the Propellerhead Web site and began the long wait until Reason's release date. Each month I watched the progress meter on the site slowly creep up toward the next stage of the software's development, and eventually to the beta-testing phase. I had all but given up when sometime around Thanksgiving I found the freshly released Reason demo on the Shareware Music Machine site (www.hitsquad.com/smm/). After spending a week or two jamming with Reason, I discovered that good things do come to those who wait.

LE Boot Camp 9.2003 Pro Tools Enters the Age of Reason By Joe Gore Digidesign's recent Pro Tools 6.1 software boasts a number of cool new features, but the coolest by far — at least for those of us creating music on LE systems — is the program's new support for the ReWire protocol. Devised by Propellerhead Software, the Swedish audio brainiacs behind such programs as ReBirth, ReCycle, and Reason, ReWire is a means of sending audio and MIDI data between applications. Now you can run ReWire-compatible applications such as Propellerhead Software's Reason and Ableton's Live together with Pro Tools, controlling them via Pro Tools MIDI files and capturing their audio output as Pro Tools tracks via RTAS plug-ins. Sound a bit familiar? It should, if you've clocked any hours wrestling with DirectConnect, the inter-application scheme deployed on pre-6.0 versions of Pro Tools. But you may find ReWire simpler and more intuitive to work with. For example, when you open an RTAS Reason, Pro Tools automatically launches Reason in ReWire slave mode. You no longer need to mess with the audio and MIDI preferences of the slave programs. In short, ReWire demands relatively little "why isn't this working?" time. Plus it gives you direct access to two seriously ass-kicking programs. It's a particularly cool situation since the strengths of Reason and Live directly complement those of Pro Tools. Reason, for example, offers an impressive assortment of virtual instruments, an area in which Pro Tools is still finding its feet. (And some of PT's best virtual synths, such as Access' Indigo and McDSP's Synthesizer One, remain TDM-only options.) Similarly, Live excels at the real-time time-shifting of audio loops, a trick Pro Tools doesn't yet do.

LE Boot Camp 10.2003 Reasonable Grooves By Joe Gore Last month we talked about how the new ReWire capability in Pro Tools 6.1 lets PT users integrate two powerful audio programs, Reason and Live, within their Pro Tools sessions. We took a quick tour of Reason and learned how to pilot its software synths via Pro Tools MIDI tracks. This time we'll revisit some of those moves, then take on two of Reason's crafty rhythm tools, Redrum and Dr.REX. If you didn't catch last month's Pro Tools-meets-Reason column, you can do so here . And if you haven't yet downloaded the Reason demo, snag a copy here . Before opening Pro Tools, configure Reason for your system as summarized last month. Once again, PC Mac is a basic, one-of-everything song template to use as a starting point for your explorations. You might also consider changing the settings in Reason so the program opens to this default template rather than its usual rollicking Stockhouse dance theme. To do so, bring the Reason app to the foreground and go to the Preferences menu. Under

A: Propellerheads software maintains the Official FAQ.
A: Follow the steps in this tutorial Q: How do I automate an effect paramter such as Delay Time?
A: Create a sequencer track to control the effect device. Right-click on the device, and choose Create->Sequencer Track for [Device]. Now you can right-click on whatever device control or parameter you want to automate and select Edit Automation. Q: Are there any parameters on the devices that can't be automated?
A: Yes. They fall into three categories. First, you can't automate patch or sample selection in any of the instruments. You could not, for example, change from Bright Piano to Grand Piano using one NN19 Sampler. There are also certain buttons on devices that don't make sense to automate, since they do not affect the sound, such as "Select Slice Via MIDI" on the Dr. Rex. The final kind of control you are not able to automate are the controls on the back of the rack. Q: Why won't Reason keep my changes after I press Record?

Propellerheads Reason 1.0 review
For those of us in electronic music, Propellerheads' Reason has been one of the most eagerly anticipated software releases of recent memory. It's ambitious goal is nothing less than to be an entire studio full of gear (synths, samplers, mixers, fx, sequencers and all). It's taken quite a while to come to the market, and the big question on everyone's mind is this:
"Is Reason still as jaw-droppingly cool as it first seemed when it was introduced almost a year ago at Winter NAMM 2000?"
The Answer: Your jaw is about to come completely off!
I'll even go as far to say that Reason is as much of a milestone event in the development of electronic music as the ADAT and the VS-880 were for personal recording. Why? Simply this: There has never been such an unparalleled integration of all the components of a modern electronic music studio into one elegant and power program before. The user interface is clearly designed by not just brilliant software engineers, (there are plenty of those these days), but by guys who are first and foremost musicians that know and love the process of making electronic music. The attention to detail is stunning. The "money-shot" is that the rack even flips around and you can patch all the cables in the rack with more detail and precision than in a real studio! Of course, the graphics are amazing, but get past the bells and whistles and you realize what a quantum leap forward this program is in user interface design. It is extremely friendly and intuitive. For example, when you create a new device, it is rack mounted for you, patched into the mixer with masking tape labels, and even auto-routed into the system in ways that make it seem like that Reason almost knows what you're thinking. Using Reason is truly inspiring because our familiar studio tools and instruments are so easy to access, and your creative flow keeps moving.
