Ideas for getting Boys to Read
- James Moloney
The following is taken from my book "Boys and Books" (ABC Books, 2000).
The list at the end is also from the book. It is one of 14 lists supplied to help parents and teachers. What boys DO like - a brave appraisal To answer a question such as "What DO boys like to read?" is almost impossible. All manner of conflicting generalisations get in the way. For example, are we talking about willing readers or reluctant readers. Are we looking for books a boy will read by himself or books to read to a boy. By way of introducing this section, I will blaze ahead regardless with a few point distilled from my years as a librarian in an all boys school. More detailed consideration and practical assessments of what we parents (and teacher) can do will follow. * It is a mistake to believe that boys in general and reluctant readers in particular, do not like fiction. It is often the type of fiction presented to them that is the source of their rejection. On the whole, boys enjoy books which place action ahead of emotion and where what the characters do is more important that what the characters think or feel. Hence, the apparent preference for the action novel. These are the equivalent of thrillers and detective stories in adult reading matter. They often come in series to help marketing

ROMANS 10:17-18 So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. Back In the forties Alexander Scourby recorded the very first narration of the Bible. It was produced by The American Foundation For The Blind and distributed by The American Bible Society as The Talking Bible. The Logo on the records read "God's Word for a new age". Fifty years have passed and I would like to present to you "God's Word for this new age." The oldest Book in the world is now available in multimedia. Instead of 67 wax records running at 16 2/3 Rpm speed it now fits onto one CD-ROM disk. Yes with Audio Bible you can listen to all 72 hours of audio without flipping a record or tape. You may ask yourself, why you need Audio Bible? One of my friends made the point clear to me. He asked me, "tell me of one thing your father ever wrote to you?" My mind went blank. After a few seconds he said, "now tell me things your father told you?" My mind began to fill with memories and his point was made. We remember better if we hear it and best if we read along with what we hear. This is what Audio Bible is all about. For centuries the Bible was read aloud, even when in private, remember the story of Philip and the Eunuch?

In fact, Team America 's problem really is one of time. This superhero satire, which has lots of serious, semi-serious, and not-at-all-serious things to say about the current state of the world, is about an hour longer than it needs to be. There's roughly 30 minutes of good stuff in Team America … but that leaves more than an hour of sub-par filler. As a result, this movie is more of a curiosity than a fully formed motion picture. It will have adherents, to be sure, but I am not among them. My feelings about this movie and its creators, the

Home Author Index Shakespeare The Bible ...
    Episode 18 - Penelope
Search all of Ulysses Ulysses has been labeled dirty, blasphemous, and unreadable. In a famous 1933 court decision, Judge John M. Woolsey declared it an emetic bookalthough he found it sufficiently unobscene to allow its importation into the United Statesand Virginia Woolf was moved to decry James Joyce's "cloacal obsession." None of these adjectives, however, do the slightest justice to the novel. To this day it remains the modernist masterpiece, in which the author takes both Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes. It is funny, sorrowful, and even (in a close-focus sort of way) suspenseful. And despite the exegetical industry that has sprung up in the last 75 years, Ulysses is also a compulsively readable book. Even the verbal vaudeville of the final chapters can be navigated with relative ease, as long as you're willing to be buffeted, tickled, challenged, and (occasionally) vexed by Joyce's sheer command of the English language.
Among other things, a novel is simply a long story, and the first question about any story is: What happens?. In the case of Ulysses, the answer might be Everything. William Blake, one of literature's sublime myopics, saw the universe in a grain of sand. Joyce saw it in Dublin, Ireland, on June 16, 1904, a day distinguished by its utter normality. Two characters, Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom, go about their separate business, crossing paths with a gallery of indelible Dubliners. We watch them teach, eat, stroll the streets, argue, and (in Bloom's case) masturbate. And thanks to the book's stream-of-consciousness techniquewhich suggests no mere stream but an impossibly deep, swift-running riverwe're privy to their thoughts, emotions, and memories. The result? Almost every variety of human experience is crammed into the accordian folds of a single day, which makes Ulysses not just an experimental work but the very last word in realism.

In the rally, sponsored by the Family Research Council, one of the leaders called the congressional tactic of delaying debate, or blocking legislation, "judicial tyranny to people of faith." "The future of democracy and ordered liberty actually depends on the outcome of this struggle," Focus on the Family founder James Dobson told the crowd at the "Justice Sunday" rally at a church in Louisville, Kentucky.
