HOME ART EDUCATION GREAT ARTISTS IN HISTORY - JAMES McNEILL WHISTLER James McNeill Whistler (1834 - 1903) 'As music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight . . .' IMPORTANT DATES James Abbot McNeill Whistler was born in America, yet he spent much of his life abroad. Early years were spent in Russia and then in London, only moving back to America with his family out of necessity when his father died of cholera. While a child in Russia, Whistler had attended drawing classes, but it wasn't until 1855 after dropping out of West Point Military Academy that he embarked on an artistic career. He moved back to Europe from America, settling in Paris. This was the beginning of a lifetime commitment to art. He quickly made his presence felt due to his flamboyant, eccentric ways. He would go about Paris wearing a straw hat, a white suit, highly polished black patent leather shoes and a monocle. While in France Gustave Courbet, the Realist painter, was an early influence on his art. He then moved to London in 1859 where he discovered, and made etchings of, what was to be one of his favourite subjects, the River Thames. In London he met Joanna Heffernan, a captivating red-head. She modelled for him and was his companion for the following seven years. Joanna is seen in the controversial

Music: Alexandre Desplat U.S. Distributor: Magnolia In French with subtitles It has been nearly a year since I first saw Read My Lips , and the taste of the film still lingers. Time may leech away the specifics, but the overall impression remains. So it is with many great films. By far, the most impressive French film I saw at 2001 edition of the Toronto Film Festival was Read My Lips , the fourth feature from director Jacques Audiard. Although the movie contains elements of a romantic thriller, it is equally powerful as a drama. The two main characters are effectively developed and fully realized. In fact, it's the protagonists - in particular, the interaction between them - that drives this motion picture forward and keeps us involved. However, unlike in many character studies, the plot is more than just a simple framework. It is complex and unpredictable, and, as a result, provides the perfect means to better get to know the characters and understand the shifting nature of their relationship. Carla (Emmanuelle Devos) is a hearing-impaired 35-year old woman who works as a secretary in a property development company. Her life is ruled by routine - she never goes out and is always available to babysit for her friends. She longs to move forward both in her career and in her personal life, but, encumbered by her hearing deficiency, she is unsure how to do so. One day, when her bosses decide she needs an assistant, she takes on an unskilled but charismatic 25-year old man, Paul (Vincent Cassel). Paul is an ex-con, fresh out of jail, with no place to live. Carla is immediately attracted to Paul, and he recognizes this, and decides to manipulate the attraction for his own purposes. In return for helping her with her career goals, Paul persuades Carla to use her lip-reading abilities to aid him in casing out an apartment he intends to rob.

    Boston Herald
By Heather V. Eng Saturday, April 23, 2005

The James Joyce Ramble is two challenges in one: running and reading the late Irish writer's difficult prose.
The annual Dedham road race allows pavement pounders, literary aficionados and those who are a bit of both to bond in a 10K run as actors in period costumes read aloud from Joyce's works.
``It's the only theatrical event where the actors stand perfectly still and the audience is moving constantly,'' said Ramble founder Martin Hanley.
Twenty-one years ago, Hanley and some friends were running races and growing tired of hearing loud rock music blaring from roadside speakers. At the same time, Hanley was struggling through ``Finnegans Wake.''

"Amen to that," Jerry Rowland said when the last player folded. He reached forward to collect the pile of uniform accessories they used for poker chips, the plastic fatigue buttons a nickel, the brass dress buttons a quarter; rank insignia were a dollar and up depending on the rank they represented: a private a dollar, a lance corporal twelve bits, a corporal two dollars which, in that particular troop-carrying compartment, was as valuable as they could get. "I'm calling it a night," Donald Durant said, tossing in his cards, then he added, "Is it night?"

    Fenimore Cooper
James Fenimore Cooper was born on September 15, 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey, the twelfth of thirteen children. In 1790, the family moved to Lake Otsego, in upstate New York. Early experiences in a frontier town gave Cooper the background for The Pioneers (1823), among other frontier novels. After being expelled from Yale College, in 1806 he tried to run away to sea, but his father intervened and got him a commission in the United States Navy. He sailed twice to England and served at a frontier outpost on Lake Ontario before being assigned to recruit sailors in New York City, where he met his future wife. After the deaths of his father and older brothers left him heavily in debt, Cooper cast about for a reliable source of income, and his career as a writer began. His first tale, Precaution , was published in 1820; the work and its reception were agreeable enough to encourage Cooper to continue, and his next novel, The Spy: A Tale of the Neutral Ground (1821) established him as an exciting new presence on the American literary scene. More works quickly followed

    51. James Wolcott

    http://jameswolcott.com/
James Wolcott is a VANITY FAIR contributing editor The Shame Game Posted by James Wolcott Roger L. Simon , August 16: "Women's rights are the very center of the War on Terror. In fact I would argue Islamofascism at its core is more than anything else an expression of rage against women and that Islam itself is not much better on that score." snip "Those who think this war is not worth fighting chose to ignore the fate of hundreds of millions of Muslim women. Shame on them." Reuel Marc Gerecht, discussing the forthcoming Iraqi constitution on Meet the Press, August 21: "Women's social rights are not critical to the evolution of democracy. We hope they're there, I think they will be there, but I think we need to keep this perspective." So those who think this war isn't worth fighting are shameful because of their craven indifference to women's rights while one of the leading neocon architects of the very war that Simon championsand not just any architect, but a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and the Director of the Middle East Initiative for the Project for the New American Century isn't that concerned that a new Iraq constitution might roll back and restrict women's freedoms, subjecting them to Islamic law.

We are stronger, wiser for having read Jim Welch
James Welch died on August 4, 2003. He was the author of many books, including Fools Crow The Indian Lawyer , and Killing Custer.
We have many books about the individual pursuit of success and significance. We have fewer that explore the practical and spiritual realities of belonging. Of these, we have none better than Fools Crow.
    by Michael Umphrey
Through the summer I have been re-reading James Welch’s books, because there were things there I wanted to feel again and think about some more. I wanted to continue being taught by this gifted writer. I urge other Montanans to remember him in part by giving some time and attention to his work. Montana is at a critical juncture, and we have all sorts of important decisions to make that will have ramifications long into the future. At such times, nothing is more useful than the right stories, because the right stories educate our desires. Our best writers teach us what we need to consider to live well, and James Welch stands among our best writers. At the beginning of Fools Crow , the young man who has not yet earned his name is longing for a vision and a song that he cannot find. But he believes in visions, and he desires one. Desire supports him, sustains him, and guides him through all manner of trouble.
