Yo-Yo Ma captivates Symphony Hall with sincerity Boston Symphony Orchestra With Yo-Yo Ma. Symphony Hall. Feb. 18-20. By Allison Marino Staff Reporter classical, with Joseph Haydn's Symphony 101; neo-romanticism, with Stephen Albert's Cello Concerto; and late romantic Czech nationalism, with Antonin Dvorak's Serenade for Strings. Symphony 101, nicknamed "The Clock" within a decade of its first performance, is one of Haydn's well-loved "London" symphonies. The Cello Concerto was finished only two years ago and marks the first BSO performance of any of Albert's works. Light and spirited, Serenade for Strings was composed in a surprising one and a half weeks, during a compositional torrent of Dvorak's in 1875. BSO assistant conductor Robert Spano led the orchestra for this blockbuster program because Seiji Ozawa was ill. Composer Stephen Albert's recent and untimely death in December 1992 made Ma's performance of his Cello Concerto particularly poignant. Even though Ma's technical facility was undeniably awesome, the true life of the performance lay in his intensely sincere interpretation of Albert's Concerto. Whether the mood was harsh and rhythmic, lyrical and passionate, or frenetic with seemingly impossible tempo changes, the cello seemed an extension of Ma. He smoothly mastered neo-romanticist tonalities; the tonal focus was at times major, minor, chromatic, and even borrowed from the East. Albert composed the Cello Concerto specifically for Ma, often consulting with him to work out compositional blocks. Well-crafted and expressive, the concerto displayed Albert's unusual compositional talent and insight as Ma brought it to life. The loss of Stephen Albert's will definitely be felt in the musical community.

In highschool, he participated in several plays. Later on, he and a group of friends founded the Immediate Theatre in Chicago (Illinois). This theatre indirectly helped him on his way to his later roles in tv series and movies. In 1985, he moved to New York, where he played in several Big Apple based productions. A couple of years later, he made the big step to Los Angeles and to the bigger tv and movie productions. Stephen Caffrey is well-known for this three-year role in "Tour of Duty" a tv series on the Vietnam War in which he played Lieutenant Myron Goldman. Some people may also know him from his role in the Aids drama movie "Longtime Companion". Stephen also did guest appearances in several other tv series. format this article to print AUSTIN, STEPHEN FULLER (1793-1836). Stephen Fuller Austin, founder of Anglo-American Texas, son of Moses and Maria (Brown) Austin, qqv qv and study law. At this time Moses Austin was on his way to San Antonio to apply for a grant of land and permission to settle 300 families in Texas. qv qv rump congress, the junta instituyente , to complete a law that the emperor signed on January 3, 1823. It offered heads of families a league and a labor of land (4,605 acres) and other inducements and provided for the employment of agents, called empresarios, to promote immigration. For his services, an empresario qv qv passed a law conforming in general to the previous act approved by Iturbide. It continued the empresario system contemplated by that law and offered to each married man a league of land (4,428 acres), for which he was obligated to pay the state thirty dollars within six years. In the meantime, Austin had substantially fulfilled his contract to settle the first 300 families. Under this state law, he obtained three contracts (in 1825, 1827, and 1828) to settle a total of 900 additional families in the area of his first colony, besides a contract in partnership with his secretary, Samuel M. Williams, qv for the settlement of 800 families in western Texas. Unfortunately, this partnership contract led to a disagreeable controversy with Sterling C. Robertson.
