MADISON - Dr. John D. Wiley, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was today named chancellor of the university, effective January 1, 2001. Dundee Lord Provost John Letford said today he was “one of the casualties” of living a life in the public eye. Mr Letford said the stress and long hours involved in being a civic leader was the main reason he had to undergo a triple heart by-pass operation last year. He talked about his heart surgery after being told that Helen, the wife of Aberdeen’s Lord Provost John Reynolds had a stroke on Sunday. Aberdeen Lady Provost Helen Reynolds is currently being treated in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, the same hospital that Lord Provost Letford underwent his operation. Mr Letford said that many lord provosts and their families struggle to cope with being “thrust into the limelight”.

The appointment of a University provost last semester is allowing GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg to travel abroad more freely this year.
Trachtenberg, who recently returned from a trip to London, is set to visit the Middle East in October and China in December, both GW-related trips to "follow up on resources, plan joint ventures, and ultimately make sure that GW continues to play a role as an international institution," he said.
Trachtenberg declined to comment on details of his upcoming Middle East trip.
In London, Trachtenberg said he met with alumni to "renew their interest" in the University for fundraising purposes and traveled to Oxford to see the head of Pembroke College. Trachtenberg said trips abroad help cultivate and maintain relationships with foreign university leaders.

The Metcalf Awards
The Metcalf Awards are given annually to one or more finalists in the competition for the Metcalf Cup and Prize. The winners of the Metcalf Awards each receive $5,000. "The Metcalf Awards for Excellence in Teaching express Boston University's understanding of the centrality of teaching in higher education," President Emeritus Jon Westling has stated. "A university is many things: an active tradition of inquiry, attentiveness, respect for the past and the future, a struggle to comprehend the world and the ideas we have of it, and a community defined by its open-ended debates. Teaching is what elevates and unifies these diverse elements and brings them directly into the lives of students. By recognizing and encouraging outstanding teaching, the Metcalf Awards express Boston University's deepest purpose. Each fall, the Metcalf Committee invites students, faculty members, and alumni to submit letters recommending current full-time faculty members for consideration for the Metcalf Awards (See guidelines for making a recommendation)

to receive OBE at Buckingham Palace
John Hayward, Provost of the University of Durham, Queen's Campus (UDSC) is a guest at Buckingham Palace this week to collect his OBE. Mr Hayward was honoured for his contribution to higher education in the Birthday Honours List announced earlier this year. The investiture is due to take place on Thursday 4 November. Mr Hayward spent fourteen years as Registrar and Secretary and in 1994 took on the additional role of Principal at the Queen's Campus. In June 1999 he was officially installed as Provost of the Queen's Campus at the annual congregation ceremony. During his time at UDSC John has seen the campus grow into a 21 st century learning environment with the completion of a £15 million extension which provides extensive laboratory, teaching and residential accommodation. He is currently working on the next phase of the development at UDSC which is to provide extensive research facilities to be built adjacent to the campus. The continued growth and expansion of the innovative Queen's Campus is testament to the hard work and commitment that John Hayward has given. The success of the Campus can be highlighted with the record intake of students for this academic year. There are currently over 1350 full time students enrolled at Stockton with a similar number studying on part time courses. Compare this with the 200 pioneering students who entered in 1992 when the campus opened. Future plans are for further growth to 2100 full time undergraduates during the next three years.

MS SOCIETY RESPITE PROJECTS WILL ALSO BENEFIT
FROM TRUST'S BIGGEST EVER FUNDRAISING DRIVE The Lord Provost's Charitable Trust is to embark on a major fundraising campaign in support of Multiple Sclerosis research and respite. Lord Provost John Reynolds today revealed a three-year drive to raise money for the city branch of the MS Society - and advanced research at the University of Aberdeen - would be the biggest ever undertaken by the Trust. The campaign marks a departure from those previously held, running for the remainder of the Provost's term in office and aiming to secure substantial sums, in partnership with experienced city fundraisers. Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system. It can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor co-ordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, and blindness. These problems may be permanent, or they may come and go. For reasons as yet unknown, it is particularly common in Aberdeen and, indeed, throughout the entire North-east of Scotland. There is no known cure.

This is a long shot and may not be of any help at all; however....
When you mentioned Sarah was French/Cdn, I expect she might have married a French fellow whose name would be Denis (den-ee) rather than Dennis.
There is a Denis Provost born a bit earlier than you suggest, probably in 1874..as can be seen on the 1881 census. I've included everyone from the census in hopes that something might connect for you.
