Elvis Presley b. Tupelo, Mississippi, January 8, 1935; d. August 16, 1977 Elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame
The one factor usually overlooked in discussions of Elvis Presley is that he came from the country market, and, in a sense, had a more powerful and lasting impact on country music than preeminent country stars such as Hank Williams or Jimmie Rodgers. Until Presley’s arrival, country music had been considered regional, and only a few artists, such as Eddy Arnold, had shaken off this stigma. Presley opened the door for younger country singers, such as Marty Robbins, Sonny James, and Johnny Cash, to get their music exposed to a broader market. The consensus around Nashville in the mid-to-late 1950s was that Elvis Presley was very bad for country music, that he had in fact almost killed it; in truth, he was very good for a younger generation of country musicians, giving them potential access to broader media exposure than their predecessors had enjoyed.
By the late 1960s Presley’s career was in serious trouble. The movies and the accompanying soundtracks had almost destroyed his reputation. He hadn’t appeared live since March 1961, and so it must have been with some trepidation that he made a live appearance at the NBC studios in Burbank in June 1968 for the taping of a television special that did much to restore his credibility. Apparently reinvigorated, Presley put more effort into song choice and returned to the upper reaches of the charts with “If I Can Dream,” “In the Ghetto,” and “Suspicious Minds.” Some have attributed the new career direction to his marriage to Priscilla Beaulieu on May 1, 1967, although financial pressures and a desire to escape from the stagnant pattern he had established were probably more important.

    50. Elvis Presley And James Dean Boomers Fifties Teen Idol Magazine Article

    Elvis Presley and James Dean
Boomers Fifties Teen Idol Magazine article
    A Tale Of Two Legends
Jimmy was known for his moods, as he looked for meaning in his life. Elvis, too - introspective, searching for fulfillment.
A Tale Of Two Legends James Dean. And such a man Elvis Presley.
Both have been a symbol for today's youth. Jimmy was the personification of youth struggling to be heard, of young people who were longing to find a place in this world.
And Elvis, too, is a symbol, the idol of youth who are struggling to be known in a world of adults, to have their very own and very private world. Let the adults laugh all they want. It just proves that this is one thing they can't have, and one world to which they can't belong. For once the teenagers are the insiders, and Elvis is the key to that world.
Each in his own way represents the spirit of rebellion, the yearning for adventure of the young people of the restless generation.
But the similarities between the two go further and deeper than that.

    PRESLEY, ELVIS
, rock singer. The most revolutionary figure in the history of pop music, the "king of rock 'n' roll" was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, the only child of poor sharecroppers; the family moved to Memphis in 1948. After graduating from high school, Presley worked as a truck driver. In 1954 Sam Phillips, president of Sun Records in Memphis, recognized his talent as "a white man who had the Negro sound and the Negro feel." Phillips released Presley's "That's All Right, Mama," an up-tempo blues song sung with an exuberant sense of freedom; it was followed by four other singles. Many critics regard these early records, recorded in 1953-1955, as his best. His country songs, like "Tryin' to Get to You," expressed affection and respect for the traditions of poor white southerners; his blues, like "Good Rockin' Tonight," conveyed rebellion against and defiance of those traditions. This pattern of respect and rebellion gave Presley's early music its remarkable emotional complexity and power. The years 1956-1959 marked Presley's triumph: "Heartbreak Hotel" (1956) held the number 1 spot on the charts for eight weeks, followed by "Don't Be Cruel," backed by "Hound Dog," number 1 for eleven weeks—a record for the rock era. With these songs Elvis initiated a cultural rebellion of young people against an adult world they saw as conservative and trivial. In his 1956 television appearances Elvis, shaking his hips and swiveling his knees, shattered the world of bland family entertainment with his raw, unruly power. Adults were outraged over the "vulgarity" of "Elvis the Pelvis," and most programs showed him only from the waist up when he was performing. Elvis now exemplified the rock 'n' roll rebel with his potent fusion of white teenage exuberance and the pulsating beat and frank sexuality of black rhythm and blues.

    Real Name: Doris Smith
Born: September 26, 1939, in Pride, Louisiana.
    Husbands: Roland Bourgeois (? - ? - divorced)

Donna Douglas is best known for her role as Ellie Mae Clampett on the '60's TV series, The Beverly Hillbillies , and she was tailor-made for the role. Raised on her grandparents farm in Louisiana, her only companions were her cousins (all boys) and the "critters". It wasn't much of a stretch to play Ellie Mae, who seemed to have two or three wild animals running around the mansion in every episode (I'm not counting Jethro). Donna moved to the outskirts of Baton Rouge while still a "young-un", and at the tender age of 17, headed for New York. She entered a beauty contest sponsored by the local newspaper industry called "Miss Byline" (!), and she won! This led to her appearance on Ed Sullivan's show, and a screen test. Hal Wallis apparently liked it, and signed her up. She made a few appearances on TV shows in the 50's and early 60's, including
