POWELL, DICK U.S. Actor-Producer Dick Powell may be best remembered as a movie star, a boyish crooner in dozens of Hollywood musicals of the 1930s, and later, a hard-boiled film noir tough guy. Like many stars of the studio era, Powell turned his dramatic talents to television in the fifties, but he did so as an adjunct to his most significant television role, as an independent telefilm producer. Between 1952 and his death in 1963, Powell served as the head of Four Star Television, which became, under his leadership, one of Hollywood's leading suppliers of prime-time network programming. As the star of numerous Warner Brothers musicals, Powell was one of Hollywood's top box-office draws during the 1930s (and quickly became just as popular on radio). By mid-decade the young singer was lobbying to break into more serious roles, but his efforts were rebuffed by Jack Warner. The parts became somewhat more varied after a 1940 move to Paramount, but the actor's dramatic ambitions were blocked there as well. The turning point came in 1944 when Powell convinced RKO to cast him as private eye Philip Marlowe in Murder, My Sweet

Powell died on January 2 of stomach cancer , one of many of the cast and crew of the 1956 movie

DICK POWELL BIRTHPLACE HISTORICAL FLEA MARKET
This place has a sign over the porch that reads "White House Historical Flea Market." In the yard is a green and white sign declaring this to be the birthplace of world-famous actor, singer and movie director Richard "Dick" Powell. Inside, the lady tending the register told me that yes, this is in fact the actual original structure in which 1940's superstar Dick Powell was brought into the world way back in 1904. That white thing at the foot of the sign is a granite marker with a brass plaque stating pretty much the same thing. Something about brass in granite makes the claim seem more legitimate. I stepped in to Woods Pharmacy, a restored 1900's soda fountain, for a reuben and a grape phosphate. My waitress didn't know who Dick Powell was. The folks across the street at the Ozark Wood and Rocker Company had a vague notion that he had been a show business celebrity of some kind. In the '40's and '50's Dick Powell was as big a star as it was possible to be. A generation after his death in 1963 the people of his own home town don't have a clear idea who he was. Sic transit gloria mundi , hot shot. Truth told, I had to look him up myself. Here is a list of some of his movies the titles of which I recognized:

ABOUT THE RADIO SHOW: Dick Powell, star of screen, radio, TV, was a solid professional who made several major transitions in the course of his great career.First was the popular singer who sang songs in flashy Dick Powell circa 1937 Depression era Busby Berkeley directed films such as "Forty Second Street" and Mervin LeRoy's Gold Diggers of 1933, which co-starred Joan Blondell and Ruby Keeler. A smart, pretty-boy type just right for the glitz and military school-inspired Berkeley visual extravaganzas, Powell was later to say, "I was so insipid I wanted to throw up. It took me five years of fighting to get out of those roles." His audience loved the films, and still do today. In the early 1940's, Powell signed with Paramont and did some decent films, but couldn't get the dramatic actor roles he yearned for. "Model Wife" was a solid film, but finally in 1944, director Edward Dmytryk gave Powell the lead in Raymond Chandler's "Farewell My Lovely." To make the point more obvious to the film public, they changed the title to "Murder, My Sweet." The film is now considered a Film Noir classic, but at the time, Powell stunned his musical fans with his acting portrayal of Philip Marlowe, the scruffy, sardonic detective. With this film, Dick Powell was on to his second screen career at last. "To the Ends of the Earth" was released in 1948, and then "The Bad and the Beautiful" in 1952. Now he had several films where he really had acted, and the public knew it. He was happy, too. He had married June Allison, whose star also rose in the late 1940's and '50's.
